The last hip replacement was done 16th Nov 2011, the 4th. I'm 69, i,m down to using one stick now. I would say to anyone contemplating the op, do not have any doubts at all, normaly the operation is nothing to worry about. To be free of pain is the most wonderful feeling if you have suffered with it before. there is no comparison in the fredom tou feel. Mike D. Spain.
wait...what happen to those illiofemoral/ischiofemoral,pubofemoral ligaments? wouldn't you dislocate your femoral head without them? i know ur muscles still hold them in place but still...the second thing is what happen to the synovial fluid? without it will it be easy to articulate? and since the neck of the femur is sawed off what happen to all the anastomoses of arteries? i am so confused...one reason why i should never have studied medicine...
@Myoldnamesdontwork The joint capsule is removed altogether - because the surfaces aren't 'living' they don't require synovial fluid for lubrication or nourishment etc.. Of course this compromises the stability at the hip which is why the surgeon uses forceps to separate the surrounding muscles rather than cutting through them, to promote maximum possible stability at the joint and limit dislocation as much as possible. I don't know about the ligaments or arteries though...
Please if posible do not get the hip replacement , suffer the pain as long as you can. I have had three hip replacements and now for the past 5 yrs. I have not had a hip and I am unable to walk....the surgeries failed and my hip was removed and not replaced....three stikes and you are out.
I really appreciate my surgeon who did #1 in 2005 and will be doing #2 now. I am scheduling this one sooner. I had double slippage of capital epihyses following sledding at 12 I thought I was invincible after surgeries to stabliize them with corrugated pins. Consequently, the ancient burred up 1963 three pins in the right hip took 6 hours to remove. We will all know better with this one. I'll be missing Zumba for a good while. Hate that! Hate unrelenting pain more.
I just had this done may 31',out of hospital in 3 days. used a walker in hospital and nothing when i came home. it was pretty painless and it works just fine..i plan on going dancing next friday. it's amazing the work drs. wilson and sullivan can do.they are the best!
So I was a bit curious and decided to do research on this , Since my mom is having surgery on her hip on June 28th . I hope everything turns out well (: Because she goes to work with pain and comes home in pain :(
@OoHARVoO yeh and then they just pull it out. its sucks i had one in my knee. they just yank it. AND BLOOD SPRAYS EVERYYWHEREEEEEE, nah haha jks, but yeh, tube = pain
Nice work!! good to see what i may be in for soon. amazing how they go straight thru the gluteus maximus and i thought there were more muscles involved in the hip than shown. really wish i didnt need one. my best hope is based on a story a taekwando master told me about a black belt with 2 new hips that could do standing backflips
sherlene had a lot of stomach pain and went to a specialest in one of the largest hospitals in tulsa he told her it was pancreas cancer and needed surgery right away or she would die a slow painfull death well that surgery was the biggest mastake of our lives a wise amn once said give a man enough rope and he will hang humself but hitler proved if you give a man enough power he will hang you with that very rope well i have been hung and my video is my way of kicking back against the ropes
I really hate to ask this. Has anyone ever considered it because it's affecting their sex life? If I'm getting around ok with unnoticable maneuvering, except in bed, should I get'er done? I used to have a great sex life until some "discomfort", which can be a bit depressing. It's hell getting old.
Very informative, thank you. I'm 63 and just had this surgery on 7 Apr 11. I'm a cyclist and did the best I could to go in as fit as possible. It paid off, I was walking 6 hrs after I awakened, and spent only 36 hrs in the hospital. I used crutches for two days and went to a cane after that. Back to work after 11 days. Even the Drs. and nurses were surprised. Follow the Drs. orders, go at your own rate and don't fret over it. There are millions of successful surgeries.
@sourdough51 any pain when doing the operation or after the operation.... just wondering how they seal the muscle ,seems like they break the muscle, how muscle can work again...thx indeed
@MrMartinLee1 I was sedated and given a spinal tap and felt nothing as I was numb from the waist down. The muscle is sewn back together internally and on the surface they used steri strips to hold the incision closed. They're small strips of tape that eventually wear off (in about three weeks) no external stiches at all. The most important of the recovery is to not exceed 90 degrees from your femur to your torso which risks dislocation but it's also painful to exceed it. Do it if you need
@sourdough51 Thank you, whoever you are, for making it seem less terrifying. Now I just have to find a doctor that my insurance will accept. You've taken away much of my anxiety over it. Good luck to you.
@tashamahal Just as an update, almost 8 weeks now and I got back on my stationary bike at 4 weeks
(carefully) riding 30 minutes a day.@ 5 weeks I'm riding my motorcycle again pain free which was one of the main reasons for the surgery (pain free riding). After I've been sitting for 20 min. & get up to walk, I do limp a little, but it goes awayafter about 10 or 12 steps. Every week I can feel the mobility and flexibility come back, so I say again if you need it get a reputable Dr and do it!
@sourdough51 Of course there are millions of successful surgeries but they are to be avoided at all costs until they are really necessary and only after all other therapies have failed. Thanks for your posting. Jacques
@444719abcx That goes without saying, no one goes in for surgery such as this unless it's necessary. Slight discomfort is easy to live with but severe pain isn't. This procedure is for those who need it and only the patient is the one who can make that determination.
is going through that much muscle and tissue from that angle the best way of reaching the joint? its not like i would know, but i'm curious as to how much experimentation is involved into finding the best method and how quickly a given method is accepted as the absolute right way. and jamming a metal rod right through the thigh! brutal! (love it!) does it complicate things for the marrow in any way, though? considering the strain on the thigh i dont suppose screws would be an option?
my 12 year old little sister had hip surgery yesterday, poor baby. she now has a cast from her chest all the way down her ankle. she CANNOT walk for three months, therefore she will have to be in a wheelchair. =/ the wheelchair will incline bcuz she won't be able to sit up.... sucks!!!!! =[
Thank you for this video, its very useful to understand how it all works, my Dad is 81 and had a hip operation today. he has dementia as well so unfortunately does not know whats going on in his own body which is really a shame in itself. He could not even remember that he had broken his hip or why he was in hospital.
thank you. i must show this video to my father... he`s 71, and he`s waiting for this surgery... and he is afraid, maibe i can put him more relaxed now
This video has removed a big question mark about how the hospital saff can get you up the day after the surgery - it is because the muscles attaching the acetabulum to the femur are not cut at the bone but BETWEEN the two bones, then restitched after the head is replaced. Whew ! Now I understand!
Thank you for this. I've been considering this surgery and it's helping my research.
I'm about to be 19, but I've been suffering with constant hip, and other leg joint pains due to LCPD (Legg-Calved Perthese Disease) since I was 7 years old.
I will bookmark this and continue to research for treatments. Thank you
Four years ago, at 56, I had hip resurfacing done on both hips, done 1 week apart. (Unusual, but a choice I made with my MD) I stayed in the hospital and did rehab in between, and extensive rehab after. I STRONGLY urge anyone facing total hip replacement to see if they are a candidate for resurfacing, where the actual joint is preserved, but titanium implants are used to cover the damaged joint. This leaves the possibility of a total replacement later, since these procedures are not permanent.
I'm 32 and my doc recommends total hip replacement since I'm in constant pain and my x-rays show a lot of arthritis in my right hip. I have had several surgeries since I was 1,5 yrs old due to a hipdysplasia, so the next one on the list is a total replacement. My left hip is still fairly good, so replacing only the right one should releave me of a lot of pain. I'm thinking of having it done next yr. My doc is letting me decide.
holy whit, this is interesting but if I were a subject to this procedure I'd prefer to not know anything and just have it done. I'd freak out so much if I watched this vid before having that operation done
@alwaysthesamedream lol too late I watched it I had an idea I was like what about the muscles and the tendons???lol well now I know AND WISH I DIDN'T KNOW .. I'm 36 going under the knife on feb28 yes I'm nervous..but it has to be done tired of the pain bring more pain to have no more pain ??sound logical at this point...I have no choice!
for me the video doesn't play but I want to address the bilateral replacement mmeantibes1 raises MDs have been advising bilateral replacements for DECADES. Billy Joel just did it in Nov. Where have you been not to hear that? Talk to Hosp for Spec Services or John's Hopkins star orthos. I don't want it but doctors shove the idea at people all the time.
I had a total hip replacement last May. It was the "Anterior " kind where the surgeon opens you up from the front. I think it's preferable to the "Posterior" way.
Now I'm facing the operation for the other one. petalpete it's absolutely not feasible to have both hips replaced at the same time. Who told you you could or even should?
Had this surgery 9 days ago and I feel GREAT. I had some discomfort for a few hours after the surgery, but by day 2 I was up and moving with minimal discomfort. Frankly the worst part was the heat rash(on back of legs) from being stuck in bed for the better part of three days.
unfortunately this is a bit old school, as hip resurfacing and the advanced anterior approach, along with the BHR head, allow for a better post surgical experience. Nice animation, though..check out Vijay Bose at the Apollo Specialty Hospital in Chennai, India and step into the future. I am 7 weeks post op and just walked 2 miles on the beach without any pain or discomfort.
I had my right hip replaced 8 weeks ago after my femur went straight through pelvis in car accident. I am back at work walking with one and started driving (manual car)...
what worrys me is the cutting through ligaments and tendons to get to the hip, ligaments are the slowest healer of all and unless you are very young i dont see them healing no where near to the strength they was,its also going to leave tons of scar tissue which will slow the healing further. remember, pain comes from imflamation. your hip tendons and ligaments have to repair them selfs enough to carry your weight, if they cant, they become imflammed, result is ,new hip joint, same pain.
I had my left hip replaced about 6 weeks ago. I had some fears so make sure you write down every question you can think of and ASK them. recovery is slow but progressive so have patience and keep excercising. i go for a walk every day (weather permiting) and try to do something new every week or two like walking up a hill or walking up extra stairs (going up and down twice) Know your limits so don't over do it and remember to also rest. I wish anyone well who's going to have one done.
When I was about 13 years old a condition called Perthes disease has effected my left hip which some what restricted the full use of my left leg (can not be fully bent), in my mid 20's it started giving me some pain (due to osteoarthritis) which became unbearable and left me in pain 24/7, it effected my job; and financially and mentally I was suffering a lot, then I was lucky to consult one of the best if not the best Orthopedic surgeons in my country Dr. Narendra Pinto (MD, FRCS) who advised
me to get a Non Cemented THR. the surgery was performed by the surgeon who also helped me to find funds to purchase the prostheses on 07/03/2005 ( I Was 38). the surgery has to be performed on me under local anesthesia since I was having a high BP even during the surgery I was happy that the pain I was going through all these years will end for good after this (Surgery) and It was! now I am quite happy and painless, I lead a normal life ,Thanks to modern medicine and a Surgeon like Dr.Pinto
two friends and a supervisor at work have had this surgery, Buddy actually grew an inch or so, his hip joints were so far gone he had no joint in the pelvic bone at all. Now walks totally pain free. There are new ceramic lined joints as well, which have a much longer life span.
I don't know why total hip replacement patients opt to get this type of surgery when there is the Direct Anterior Approach that preserves the gluteus and femoral muscles. Recovery time is shorter than this type of barbaric surgery. More surgeons should train to do the Direct Anterior Approach. Shorter hospital stay and physical therapy. They should purchase the right equipment to perform this surgery and have pity on patients giving them less trauma, pain & faster recovery with no restrictions.
@Bruny Yes, it's true, but so far there are only a few surgeons using the anterior approach. I read that a Dr. at Good Samaritan Hospital in LA is doing them.
@MrStephenflynn ya hepends upon on your general health.. bus medication till rest of your life and their side effects is must.... and it normally expires.. u have to had another surgery.. i am not a medical doc or student.. i know it because my mother's sister had this operation twice
@MrStephenflynn you can lead a normal life, but since this is not the original part of your body; rigorous usage like heavy work outs, jumps , falls, jerks and running should be avoided to make full use (life time of the prostheses) of the surgery, for me It's the mobility I got back and the pain I had before the surgery that matters most.
@TheKarl1967 Just had hip replacement due to Legg Perthes as well. So rare to hear of anyone else who has been through similar circumstances. I'm 17 days past surgery and already noticing tremendous improvements. Here's to that pain / immobility being gone forever.
@jeffyaniga Take extra care for the first few months, and do as the doctors advised you. Because you had the same condition like mine; I could imagine the relief you are having now, If you want to know any thing more please feel free to post here or email me at karl.mendis@gmail.com ,Good Luck !
I had severe PVNS in my right hip. My doctor only cleaned the joint out. He did grafting and a total synovectomy. No over a year later I have pain in my lower right leg and just above my knee. The hip does not hurt like it used to but now I have new pains. Does anyone know what should have been done for this
i was 37 and had the surgery, i was scared but had metal on metal and after 2 months, no pain or weakness, my doctor wont let me play golf or over strech the hip in fear of dislocation, i know that im gonna have to redo this hip agian and that scares me but to be pain free and not wince every time i get out of bed is such a blessing, the new metal on metal could last a lifetime if your not active, im never gonna run agian, but im not gonna stop living
my husband had both hips replaced on May 12th. He has anklylosis spondlyitis (a form of arthritis which calles fusion of the bones). Prior to his surgery, his hips had been totally fused for 30 years. He is doing great, he had to learn to walk again. he was in inpaitent rehab for 8 days, and now he goes to out patent therapy 3 times a week. He has a new lease on life.
@Jaylen56789 Today is 8/29/2010, if she hasn't had it yet, make sure you know the brand of joint. I'm 41 and had a replacement 4yrs. ago. Still have pain 24hrs. Tests after tests show nothing. Major recalls on several brands, suggests loosening of cup in pelvis. Make sure to ask any and every question you could possibly ask.
i was 37. major accident warrented replacemnt. I have had nothing but pain for the last 9 years. Doctors and ortho's wont do anything for me. I am in constant pain, its ruined my life but the docs really dont give a damn. There paid, I'm broke and perverbeally screwed. Pain clinics have not helped, pysycall therapy is a joke, herbal and accupunture hasnt helped either. I'm pretty sure my orhto wont see me because I was one of a few paitients that went sour and would tarnish his record.
thanks a lot for this wonderful presentation. it was so suggested to me to get such operation, i am very much scared since i had also thrombosis history. would like to get more info on it.
I had my hip replaced at the age of 28, in Guys London, best move I have ever made, as I had put it off for years. Now in a position where I am still improving 18 months on and feeling fitter than ten years ago. If people have any questions then you can mail me through this account. Best wishes.
New hip...new man, I'm 57 and had my right hip replaced. It was really bad!! Arthritis!! After 17 days I was walking around my home without any help!...no cane, walker, or crutches! I say...go for it! All my friends are amazed at my recovery time. I do realize that everbody is different...I still say...GO FOR IT!...the technology and skills are there!! My right hip is no longer an issue! By the way...my left knee is "next on the list". SunKing
I am a 23 year old girl who is about to have her second hip replacement. I will now have had a double hip replacement. I believe as I am younger I will heal a lot quicker and with more ease that somebody who is twice my age. If you are needing a hip replacement then it is the best thing you can do. It has stopped my pain and I am able to function normally. The reasons for me to have my hip done is to stop me from having to take a large amount of pain killers.
I am getting ready for my second hip. I am or used to be a Mountain climbing instructor. I am sure you will be find. Yes, pain killers are no good for long term. My heart goes with you and a lot of luck too. I am sure you will fine. If you have time let me know what it is like with two hips. Thanks
i need to do one for my mother. is it going to function just like your natural legs or a bit different, less active? 2. how much approximately does such a surgery cost? thanks..
I've been thru hip surgery before, so I didn't have to much trouble with it, but yes, I had to go. They will teach you how to do stairs the right way (very important! most people do it wrong!) and how to build strength. It's not really that hard, an hour or so at physio every week at first, then every second.
had my pre op today and am just waiting now to be called in for hip replacement im 48 and told am young for this op but anything has to be better than the horendous pain that is caused daily
i had hip sugery about 4 or 5 years ago on the left side but they used a screw....now i think my hip messed up from it and now im dealing with to diffent side of legs.half a inch differnts....so im wondering if i should go with this and could i even do it because of the scew i already have in??
I had my left hip replaced last year and my right hip done two weeks ago. The left hip is functioning perfectly, and the right hip is getting better every day.
Thank you so much for this vid. I am 33 and my hubby is pushing back about having the surg because he has fears. I am trying to get him to understand the constant level of pain and the fact that I don't want to be on pain meds for another 10 years before I am deemed 'age appropriate' for the surg.
I had my right hip replaced last Jan. at the age of 17. Tell your husband that the procedure is a peice of cake, and that the pain will definatly go away! I lived with hip pain for 7 years after a failed double osteotomy and wouldn't traid my new hip for the world! And lets face it, delaying your hip replacement for to long may cause new problems in your back, knees and feet. If I can get my hip done at 17, you deserve yours at 33.
@lilscfb My mother just had hip surgery and even though it's rough the first night. She said it was well worth it. Mom has had the problem for fifteen years and she just had it fixed so please if you tell your husband my mother's story then maybe it'll change his mind. It will change his life, that is if he hasn't changed his mind already.
I think as long as you've explored all of your options. I mean being cut open is not a light matter. It's always better to maintain your own joints. I'd talk to people who have had similar problems as you have had who have found solutions through other modalities, like yoga, Pilates and physical therapy. There's always someone out there who did it a different way and got results. Surgery is final so before you do it you should definitely explore all of your options. love!
@lilscfb : i had this operation one week ago (2010.11.26). I'm a 48 year old male. I've had more pain and worst times at the dentist. Tell your husband that it is NOT WORTH suffering any discomfort just to avoid this surgery. my mail is cankele@gmail.com I'll be glad to help.
I had this surgery. It is quite an experience but it is worth it. I have actually had this three times due to an infection. Fortunately for me with antibiotic therapy eberything worked out and I can walk on my own without pain.
@cindypastor I also had a staph infection. I could not wait another year the pain was getting really bad. Previously I had a hipreplacement so they had to take the old prosthesis out put a spacer in, give me six weeks of IV therapy, then do a total hip replacement. I'm fine now. Typically docs want to kill an infection before they put in a permanent prosthesis. Good luck.
Just have this surgery last thursday, Nov 26, 2009, cannt imagine that they did such operation to my body, and how could I life with such very painfull operation.....
No...I dont have polio, it was not caused by polio, but I have injury on my left hipIs joint for the first time, but caused of using the pain killer for long time, my right hip joint was damage with oestophorosis. I had my hips operation for the first time last 2005, where the right hips with Bipolar Hip replacement, and the lefft side implanting. How ever this did not work well, so I have another B hip replacement for my right leg last November.
@MrEliapl ohh i have polio and i on my left leg and i just want to walk and dance normal i dont like walking with a limp everyone looks at me.and i just wanted to know if this Surgery would work on polio or some, because i had polio since i was 8 years old and i wanna walk normal i'll do any thing to walk normaal with out people looking my left leg
I am so sorry, Im not such expert could give you any medical advise, and really understand what you are feeling.
I was a football player and mountain climber when I was a student. I really proud with my leg, which had brougt me to climb almost all the mountain in my country. But, for almost this 6 years I missed it all. As human, I have a same feeling like you when realize I couldnt do that again
But, I praise the Lord, He gave me more than Im thinking. The most valuable gift He was given to me, when I could accept all that was happen to me, and feel like other normal people, and many people looked me not caused of my leg, but cause of my personality. Its been almost 5 years, every second in life with soreness, but He gave me more strenght to live with this. Its miracle,Now....I can walk back normally....I believe and praying for you , You will have the same sometime in HIS time
I've had complete B-latteral Hip Replacement- due to "Dancing my Ass off" hahhahahaha - My new hips have limitations... but- it's soooo nice to not be in pain (with the exception of when it gets cold outside)- I have a vid on here showing my "before, during & after"- it's called "Miss Ruby Tuesday- My Hip Replacement Surgeries"- Recently- I've heard their is a "Re-Call" on my Prostesis- but- I feel ok- I think those who didn't follow the guidlines for healing probably prevented healing.
I am living in Nagoya Japan, went to 2 hospitals explaining upper thigh stiffness and pain. X-rayed and did MRI on my spine and told me to go stretch my soft tissue. Been in pain for 2 years. Went to another hospital, the 70 yr old doc told me it was a hipjoint and referred me to university hospital, who told me to come back when the pain affects my daily life. Two valuable lessons Doctors are not always right and never ignore pain.
This Animation Stuff Is VERY VERY Helpful! Millions Of Thanks! =D
I have this Hip problem. I am 28 years old. My doctor told me that if i had this operation at this age, i'll have to do this same operation every 10 years, because, in this age, my leg bones will be very active. and if i do this operatin at the age of 40, then it will bbe fine.
Is it True? And Please also tell me, this thing "Prostheses", How much is it stronger? Would i be able to learn martial arts, can do racing, etc stuff?
nah, tell him you want new technology not the stuff they give geriatrics. I am 26 and just had a total hip as a result of a motorcycle accident several years back. If they use the method where they use a metal ball and socket and stimulate the bone to grow into the prosthesis and they dont use cement it can last about 25 years. Depends how active you are too. But i dont think you would be out running marathons in it. I also recovered and was off crutches and full weight bearing in 3 weeks
I have had both hips replaced at age 29. My doctor said that my hips would last probably 30 years or a little less. I have a ceramic ball. It doesn't make sense for a doctor to say have the surgery later on in life due to you being active. Seriously, you want the surgery because you are in pain and can't do the activities that you used to do. Don't waste years of life with pain. Getting my hips replaced was the best decision I ever made.
Hiya, i just had a THR on the 9th June, this year,(they also lenthened my leg at same time) im home walking round and stuff,im on crutches for atleast 6 weeks.its slow recovery, but it was complex surgery.
I have recently been told my left hip requires surgery,I'm 47yrs old and a motor mechanic. My worry is that I may not be able to continue my occupation if I have this done! can anyone tell me honestly how long the recovery period is and if full mobility returns? I am in a lot of pain now but am trying to hold out as long as possible before commiting to surgery.
If you dont have it done, I would imagine that you would have difficulty bending stretching and lying on a creeper under cars. Dont leave the decision until the pain level is present when you rest. I have seen some very active post op adults. Good luck.
i recieved a hip replacement on april 15 2008 an also a bone graft its been one year an i still hurt constently but everything is healed i was on crutches for over six months an still on a cane but there is alot of days i cant even move my leg cause it hurts so bad can any one tell me what is going on i am desperate for answers cause my surgeon dont seem to care i am 32 years old
I received a hip revision after the 1st one done in1981 worn out, and after 4 months rest I'm able to go back to my labor demanding job requiring long hours of standing, pacing and occasionally lifting. Although there are few occasions of discomfort and pain possibly caused either by excess gym exercise or prolong pacing, I have never been walking on cane . You are only 32 yrs and should have recovered much better and faster than me; I was 47 when the hip revision was done in 2003.
The surgery was a failure and you need to get a lawyer. Also (and more importantly) you need to make an appointment with a surgeon who does the anterior approach to THR.
I just had a total left hip replacement 3 weeks ago, and I'm only 27 years old. I had severe osteoarthritis in the left acetabulum. I have severe hip displasia in both hips and are scheduled for the other side in three months. Be ready for pain. Should of did the spinal anethisia, instead of general. Surgery went perfect!
Go and see an orthopedic hip surgeon. You have to be reffered by your PCP. Then will they determine if a Hip Arthroplasty is warranted. This is usually determined by xrays and MR Arthrograms.
hace 5 meces que tube esta cirugia, me siento como nuevo me ha caido muy bien, no mas dolor!! y recupere el movimiento. al segundo dia estava subiendo grada, fantastico
Great video. Neat, simple, very informative and clear. Thank you!

Nice work!! good to see what i may be in for soon. amazing how they go straight thru the gluteus maximus and i thought there were more muscles involved in the hip than shown. really wish i didnt need one. my best hope is based on a story a taekwando master told me about a black belt with 2 new hips that could do standing backflips

MrMartinLee1 8 months ago
@MrMartinLee1 I was sedated and given a spinal tap and felt nothing as I was numb from the waist down. The muscle is sewn back together internally and on the surface they used steri strips to hold the incision closed. They're small strips of tape that eventually wear off (in about three weeks) no external stiches at all. The most important of the recovery is to not exceed 90 degrees from your femur to your torso which risks dislocation but it's also painful to exceed it. Do it if you need

@444719abcx That goes without saying, no one goes in for surgery such as this unless it's necessary. Slight discomfort is easy to live with but severe pain isn't. This procedure is for those who need it and only the patient is the one who can make that determination.

TheCrazy243 9 months ago
is going through that much muscle and tissue from that angle the best way of reaching the joint? its not like i would know, but i'm curious as to how much experimentation is involved into finding the best method and how quickly a given method is accepted as the absolute right way. and jamming a metal rod right through the thigh! brutal! (love it!) does it complicate things for the marrow in any way, though? considering the strain on the thigh i dont suppose screws would be an option?

This video has removed a big question mark about how the hospital saff can get you up the day after the surgery - it is because the muscles attaching the acetabulum to the femur are not cut at the bone but BETWEEN the two bones, then restitched after the head is replaced. Whew ! Now I understand!

This leaves the possibility of a total replacement later, since these procedures are not permanent.
willie7704 11 months ago
I'm 32 and my doc recommends total hip replacement since I'm in constant pain and my x-rays show a lot of arthritis in my right hip. I have had several surgeries since I was 1,5 yrs old due to a hipdysplasia, so the next one on the list is a total replacement. My left hip is still fairly good, so replacing only the right one should releave me of a lot of pain. I'm thinking of having it done next yr. My doc is letting me decide.

I had a total hip replacement last May. It was the "Anterior " kind where the surgeon opens you up from the front. I think it's preferable to the "Posterior" way.
Now I'm facing the operation for the other one. petalpete it's absolutely not feasible to have both hips replaced at the same time. Who told you you could or even should?

unfortunately this is a bit old school, as hip resurfacing and the advanced anterior approach, along with the BHR head, allow for a better post surgical experience. what worrys me is the cutting through ligaments and tendons to get to the hip, ligaments are the slowest healer of all and unless you are very young i dont see them healing no where near to the strength they was,its also going to leave tons of scar tissue which will slow the healing further. remember, pain comes from imflamation. your hip tendons and ligaments have to repair them selfs enough to carry your weight, if they cant, they become imflammed, result is ,new hip joint, same pain.
thehomefront 1 year ago
I had my left hip replaced about 6 weeks ago. I had some fears so make sure you write down every question you can think of and ASK them. recovery is slow but progressive so have patience and keep excercising. i go for a walk every day (weather permiting) and try to do something new every week or two like walking up a hill or walking up extra stairs (going up and down twice) Know your limits so don't over do it and remember to also rest. I wish anyone well who's going to have one done.

Bruny 1 year ago
@Bruny Yes, it's true, but so far there aren't many surgeons doing the anterior approach. Not sure why not.

They will teach you how to do stairs the right way (very important! most people do it wrong!) and how to build strength. It's not really that hard, an hour or so at physio every week at first, then every second.

It will change his life, that is if he hasn't changed his mind already.

@lilscfb
Surgery is final so before you do it you should definitely explore all of your options. love!

Good luck.

Good luck.
