as a soldier i have to tell you all it a counter measure for heat seeking missiles not some crazy PSYOPS crap and this isnt a AC-130 its a plain jane C-130 AC-130's have weapons stickin out the side of them and when fallen brothers and sisters come back home we dont fly them all the way here in that lovely thing they usually use C-17 or C-5 or something a little nicer than that crude plane

thanks for the information guys. my grandfather piloted one of these. its used top usually transport fallen soldiers, but they are armed with munitions. this flare is used to signal that soldiers have died, but is also used as a flare to protect the plane from incoming missles, as Larjro92 said, heat seeking.

@OurTroopsRule It's flares, to counter missile locks. Also 130's are used to carry living soldiers, and supplies among other things, any reasonably intelligent enemy would try and shoot them down. The Spectre/Spooky gunships are exactly that, they are slow moving, fly low, and expensive... a huge target of opportunity. That is why they are normally only used at night.

The original plane is an Hercules C-130, which is originally a transport ship. AC-130 is the same plane, but it have been modified in to a gunship.

Obviously the hot flares are primarily countermeasures against heat-seeking missiles, but also some kind of psychological warfare.
