@vettey4ever the usual practice is to drop them separately, most countries drop the men after the machines. the british guys drop the men before the machines and have had a few incidents when the vehicles landed on top of the men, crushing them. I have only seen one russian video where the driver was in the truck.

@SlyNicolai Seriously, if a tank was made of aluminium it would provide no protection for the operator or crew! You wouldn't need anti-tank weapons to take one out either. A heavy machine gun with AP rounds would be more than enough. We do have some big choppers, but even the current CH-47D only has a 26,000lb. external payload capacity. The lightest available tank in the Viet Nam era was the M41 Walker Bulldog and its weight was 51,800lbs. The M48Patton weighed 108,000lbs.

It's called LAPES (Low Altitude Parachute Extraction System). It allows the aircraft to keep moving and drop cargo at an airfield or LZ that's taking fire. A similar system was used at the siege of Khe Sanh during the Vietnam War.

It is a quick delivery system for going into a hot DZ or if there isn't room enough for the 130s to land, it's called LAPES or Low Altitude Parachute Extraction System. My understanding is that the equipment being used is obsolete and that these loads are done by students training to become Load Masters.

I haven laughed this hard since I saw this in real life at Sicily DZ at Bragg.

@18sharkkiller if done properly allowing the chute to deploy on equipment then it's fine, it's really only an issue if you let the equipment fly down the rollers inside the cargo deck of the c130 without a proper deployment and slow approach speed. terrain also has to be optimal, it;'s done only in rare situations of needing to rapidly deploy supplies and unmanned vehicles.

@18sharkkiller its a drop off, they do it when there is not a long enough strip to land on, or if the area is hot and they dont want a cargo plane landing there... it would fly by low, and the cargo is pulled from the back and dropped to the ground, so ground troops could re supply or even have a armored vehicle dropped to them... and liek the other guy sayd, these are mostly tests
