It's actually quite difficult to tell whether it's a bass or a cello. It is too big to be a cello, because well, ponies aren't that short, but it has tuning pegs like a cello, and not a double bass.

It's definitely a Cello.

Look at the Wikipedia pages for both the Double Bass and the Cello.

The Cello is a skinnier build and is more rounded like in the drawing itself.

Great song! I'm a bassist myself, and the size difference is pretty drastic between bass and cello. The drawing style might just leave out the details in difference between the two. It's most likely a bass. :3

@smallgiraffe42 they probably used a treble clef because it's much more well known. Show someone a treble and they'll recognize what it is, show them a bass clef and they'll likely wonder wtf it is. Only time I ever saw a bass clef was in my trombone music. Her having a treble clef cutie mark is probably also why most people think she plays a cello rather than a double bass.

I've never seen a double bass or cello in person, so I'm not sure what the size difference is between them.

@aztecsword12 Ah, I'm a band geek, and a bassist. Well, there's quite a considerable size difference between a cello and a double bass(or stand up, or contrabass, many different names). A double bass is about 6 feet tall, and a cello is about 3-4 feet. Mucho difference. How she has a treble clef and mistaking it as a cello is also another mistake, I haven't known since recently, since we're doing transposing for the orchestra pieces, cellos play in the bass clef aswell.

@smallgiraffe42I'm a cellist and I have had to play in treble before. It's actually a tuning thing, you read treble but play at a much lower octave. And yes I can tell she obviously has a cello and not a bass. Bass tuning pegs are mechanical and either brass or stainless steel (steel for VERY high dollar current models). Plus on a bass the area under the c bout is usually much wider than the top whereas a cello is more proportional.

Take a look at the tuning pegs. Then look at Double Bass tuning machines and Cello Tuning pegs. I'm an orchestral bassist and I can tell you she plays the Cello, no doubt! :)

@BeatleBrony It's a tough call. Size-wise, it's taller than her, implying a contrabass (though cellos can occasionally be taller than the performer, too).

Based on the music (if I recall correctly from the episode), though, the notes being played by a string instrument are a bit high for a contrabass, yet are much more comfortable on cello. Not to mention that another pony is playing a sousaphone; in most ensembles that size, more than one bass instrument is redundant and overpowering.
