What makes this world record so incredible is that, unlike any other event in athletics, no-one has got within 5% of this mark. A truly astounding throw!
I have researched many track and field men's world records and I believe many of them have been made with doping, such as Randy Barnes' shot put WR (he got a life-long ban but WR remained). Although comparing results in different sports is hard I believe this may be the greatest world record ever so far. In discus, hammer throw they have been close to WR, running and jumping sports too but the 2nd longest javelin throw is a bit over 93 meters by Suomen Aki Parviainen. Amazing superiority.
Tero pitkämäki owns the potential to throw 100m+ but technique sucks atm. im finnish thrower asswell so i knon what im talking about. and when hohn threw that 104m... with new desingned javelin that coul be around 90m or even under that.
@bolderAllstarsclan Even though i totally agree with you I just have to point out the irony which has occured. I have read that Zelezny will become Pitkämäkis coach and the biggest reason för that is to improve his technique. Pitkämäki will train under him atleast to the London olympics.
i think that zelezny will be sadly missed in the world of athletics and i think in a couple of years time no one will of broken zeleznys record of 98.49 its just impossible, who ever recorded this video keep hold of it and don't let it out of your sight!!!
It was an EAA meeting (European Athletic Asociation), no big competition. It was before olympic games in Atlanta. Železný said, that he was feeling good in that time and told to his agent to send him up for some meeting. His feelings were right :-)
would have been great if he'd shouted out "This is Sparta!!" :D

Annoying how you only get to see it hit the ground for a split second, then it cuts away.

This throw is far more impressive in my eyes than the 104,20m which was thrown by Uwe Hohn with the old javelin

Jan Zelezny threw 98m with the new design, and I just want to say good luck to your Pitkämäki when competing against our Torkildsen this year ;)

lol...Pitkämäki has no chance to even get close to Jan Železný's record...wake up

@Foward66 Pitkamaki's technique won't change, wake up dude. Let him first compete against Thorkildsen, he can't even match Andreas =)

pff, javelins were shorter and much easier to throw long with at that time
waterfall6464 3 years ago
Javelins were redesigned in 1986, this WR is from 1996 and since then nothing has changed.
