The girl walking next to maiko Sakiko is a shikomi, which is what we call the first stage to becoming a full-fledged geisha (geiko). Shikomi work around the house and take lots of lessons, so that after a year they are ready to become maiko themselves. This shikomi debuted as a maiko in 2009 under the professional name of Chisako. She's still working, and Sakiko is now a geiko! :D
