this song, mostly the very first second sounds EXACTLY like the music that plays at somali weddings. that sound is used all over his songs, a prime example is Reminiscenes. thats so somali/ethiopian it kills, i love it.

I think he meant for it to sound like Ethiopian pop music from the 80s, in an interview he did not long before recording this song he said he's been listening to Ethiopian music a lot lately. I don't blame him, it's good stuff.

Tilahun Gessesse and Mahmoud Ahmed are probably the best and most well known. The easiest way to find Ethiopian music outside of Ethiopia is a series of compilations called Ethiopiques released by a French label called Buda Musique. There are currently 27 volumes in the series, but in no way do you need all of them, nor do you need to get them in order; each volume focuses on a different genre\artist. You can find volumes in this series in the world music section at most record stores

No other music from this era is this clever and entertaining. Everything else seems so trite and one-dimensional in comparison. To hell what hipsterrunoff and other contrarian blogsters with superiority complexes have to say about this man...he is the real deal. I met him a few weeks back, and he was really genuine and polite. I couldn't believe I was in the presence of a living legend.

I must say that Before Today is the best album of the year, hands down. Long live Ariel Pink!
