  • The hidden track is soooo inspired by Pictures of Matchstick Men by Status Quo. Anyone agree?

  • HOLY SHIT - that was a genius description. Hilarious. Martin Amis eat your heart out bro! Hats off to The Scribe... (... got the album earlier on the strength of this review - AND LOVE IT!) Thanks man.

  • 1:22 to 2:15 best description to an album EVER.

  • @ariel12955 THIS.

  • the way you describe it, I think of Mr. Bungle - Californai

  • uber hipster lulz

  • word! love your tastes in music man.. Sun Ra, Tom Waits, etc...

you kind of resemble Maynard James Keenan of Tool as well

  • Shame the best track on it is Duet which is Randy California. Still a great track though. I like your reviews man

  • i really like your reviews a lot! keep up the good work

  • It sounds like a grandpa rocker trying to mix Jethro Tull with Portishead while watching an obscure black and white film from India.

  • 3:22 "KOWBOYZ AND INDIANZ"!!!!!

  • I thought it is more post African Head Charge on extra sticky wiky … like a new step in Dub.

  • this album was fantastic but he sometimes sounded like some homeless guy shouting at me outside my window

by that i mean I couldn't listen to the whole thing straight through, but i LOVE this album

  • Damm a light 9 i'm listening to this cuz you gave Cosmogramma a light 8 n i think it's the best album in the world but then again everyone has their own opinion

  • just bought this LP after hearing your review, again I am not disappointed. Loved it from the first listen and it just keeps getting better. Interesting that there is no tracklisting that I can find anywhere on the sleeve or either of the discs. Had to look it up online.

  • @donotseemecricket oh shit, there it is, right next to the notes barley visable.

Another thing i thought that was strange about this LP is it says copyright 2009, not 2010

  • Am I the only one reminded of very early Zappa by this album? Particularly We're Only In It For the Money; with all the psychedelia and the songs sort of meshing into each other as well as fading out without any real conclusion, strange vocals, and play with genres.

Yeah, definitely We're Only In It For The Money.

  • Yeah, went to see Gonjasufi live in Holland last week. I only knew his music for a week, but I HAD to go see it! One of the best gigs ever.

  • Incredible description of the album. Hit the nail on the head.

  • Ive always loved Sumach's Music even when most everyone else thought he was crazy. I remember when he said that he just wanted everyone to hear his music and bob their heads... Marsians in spaceships and kicking it on the moon... He would take his voice and loop it and slow it down and it would say; "knowing I'm... So close to you..." and he would say "That... That is Love" There is no other,,, Gonjasufi...

  • lol he was singing deadnd in the beginning

  • The crackle and pops of old LP samples... Alot of people like that, incorporated w/ good production and plenty of bass... They try to make it as avante-garde as possible... Overdone sometimes IMO...

  • I cannot wait to go and buy this tomorrow. The itunes previews sound so good. This is going to sound weird, but it's kind of reminding me of the acid-blues records Muddy Waters' 'Electric Mud' and Howlin' Wolf's 'The Howlin' Wolf Album'.

  • After watching this review, I bought the album off itunes and have been promoting it on facebook now for the past week. thanks for the review and pushing me to listen to new music.

  • This album blew my mind, im so glad you recommended this!

    Thank you kind sir!

  • LOL @ ol' dirty after soccer practice, that whole collage of musicians was the perfect way to describe this album

  • best story ever.

and the award for story of the year goes to.......

  • i thought that description story was absolutely spot on. i hadnt listened to gonjasufi yet and i heard you say that and i was like whaaaat?? but then i listened to it and i was like wow that was actually a really good description. you are good with those descriptions.

  • Thumbs up if 1:23 to 2:13 made you split a gut laughing. Probably the best descriptive story I've ever heard.

  • I personally learned to hate describing music, but if any one tries I'm all ears. I just don't like defining "stuff" verbally that's abstract.

  • I hadn't even noticed the j dilla similarities before but now I can definately see them

  • I saw him yesterday in Copenhagen! The show was very weird and i've seen him live before, so i'd knew what it was going to be like! But i love his music and grabbed a cd he threw out to the crowd!

  • if youre going to reference artists, you gotta go with The Stooges (suzieq and she's gone) and, dare I say, Lyrics Born (especially on Kowboyz and Indians, vocals are very similar). Awesome album!

  • Comment removed

  • i think its trash

  • Wicked review as usual.

I particularly liked the Dilla comment towards the end. I found that with a listen to a few tracks too. Progression is important, and I think Gonjasufi and all the Brainfeeder lot have really grabbed hold of that in the right way.

  • Not even sure how accurate it is as I haven't listened yet but that's probably the best description of influences I've ever heard.

  • I like ur thing man, and even if nobody asked, i have to say I dont like this album that much, I think its lazy written , i think it lacks identity big time, Gonja's voice is incredible, but if u take that out this is a very mediocre album in a good day...I really dig 2 or 3 tracks in it though but yeah, not a good album at all and to be even more honest I think Warp is losing "it" a bit ...

  • I just got the album today and i absolutely love it. Thank you so much for introducing me to some amazing music such as Gojasufi and Fever Ray. I would have never got the chance to listen to such great music without you. You rock Anthony!!!

  • Great description of the album bro.

  • I love MADE, Duet, Ancestors and Kowboys and Indians .... have yet to experience the rest of the LP... and will do after your review... how very inspiring you are... digging the vinyl crackle and the rough warmed fuzzed out instrumentation... as you so eloquently put it... SO happy today! ta and thanks

  • Very informative review Thanks!

  • The more I listen to it, the more I looooove this album, and it does really fit with the vinyl sound... However, there is something that I really dislike on the 2xLP version: the transition between SusieQ and Stardustin' is cut in two (while it's the kind of moments I like in this major album). Such a shame...

  • @zit0un Forgot to say: funny review! You're brillant, man!

    :)

  • loved this album

  • Also def inspired by lee scratch perry

  • more like billy holiday / portishead/ charles manson

  • to my disc LP sound like Portishead meets Sun Ra and Funkadelic.... with a delay

  • i hear a hint of beefheart in the lyrics and even music at times. alot of people here devandra banhardt in the vocals to

  • brilliant review!!!!

  • you are very right about this album! I'm a big fan of Flylo and after hearing Ancestors from this album, I just had to check out the rest of the album. It's just great stuff, lots of interesting samples and influences like you said. And gonjasufi's vocals just work in this album. great review there!

  • I love this album.

  • @theyarebirds Well, I thought the eccentric vocals and the strange half-baked hip hop sounds. I thought some of the rough and tumbled sounds + the beatboxing Waits was doing on Real Gone was a pretty decent reference point. Strange stuff.

  • @theneedledrop Even though it doesn't really sound like Beefheart, I felt the same way when I first heard it. Not so much Waits in my opinion.

  • @theneedledrop : I think this guys does a great job on this review. He may not be 100% accurate. But terrific job.

Me, I am a big Beefheart fan... and what this and Trout have in common is it is out front: avant garde, if you will. No body else (I imagine) is doing anything like this (or at least the one sound I've heard).

  • @theneedledrop A very good review... IMO... good job.

  • @theyarebirds Um, yeah, the artistic references are totally right... Just because the music doesnt SOUND like Beefheart and Waits doesn't mean there aren't comparisons to draw. Beefheart gets mentioned all the time in relation to this album.

  • @theyarebirds What are you talking about first thing my friend said when i shows him gonjasufi was "sounds like Beefheart + candylane is almost exactly like something parliament would have done!

  • great album. i played cowboyz and indians to some tasteless people and they hated it. i like the album.

  • now that's the review I like to see

  • That was the greatest description i've ever heard. George Clinton would agree

  • You had me sold at ODB and soccer practice

  • :D!

  • That's the most accurate description of this album's sound I've ever heard lol. Subscribing.

  • Great review, I love this album! Got the mp3's first. After several listens I ordered the vinyl.

  • Great review, I'm agree with all.

I'm addict since the first listen. No question.

  • Nice presentation and analysis ... I am so much with you on that one!

  • OK. This is getting a listen just because you mentioned Beefheart. Trout Mask Replica is my favourite fucking album!

  • @pepperonik Tell me if you end up digging it.

  • @theneedledrop I ended up digging it! Majorly digging it! I didn't expect an album like this this year. I usually listen to newer music just to catch up with where music is going. I don't usually expect a masterpiece, just some decent music. I'm going to raise my standards for new music after this one.

P.S. I'm no music analyst but have you heard of Royal Trux? I haven't heard the whole thing yet, but their album Twin Infinitives is very experimental and lo-fi. This kind of reminded me of it. :)

  • Love this review !!! That description would make a great sitcom.

  • SU MACH (G@NJASUFI) IS THE GOD

  • I hate this album!!

    Or do I? :S

I can't stop listening to it!! Why's that? And why do everything else I try listening to sound so booooring?!

    Thx for a great review!!

  • definitely see the Tom Waits. Some of the songs have a DJ Shadow thing going on as well. Liked this, pretty different.

  • lol story at the begining!

  • Genius review! This sounds like something I should definately get my ears around :D

  • I just wanted to thank you for reviewing this - it was my first exposure to Gonjasufi. I picked this up a couple days ago. I absolutely am 100% in love with this album. I'm gonna go ahead and say this will be my favorite 2010 release. And quite possibly made its way to my all time top 10? Just amazing.

  • First listen: hated it.

    Second listen: hated it.

    Third listen: LOVED IT.

  • BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH! This comment rules!

  • No Anthony, you rule. <3

  • This album is amazing

  • So is this pretty much the best record so far this year or what? What compares?

  • One of the best Albums ever IMHO.

  • About to buy this record. I know your recommendation won't let me down.

  • Go buy it, there are, thank god, people making records like this, on WARP too, ace. I think he's been listening to Beefheart!

  • mr. FANtan-bro.... thank you for recommending this LP. i downloaded it yesterday and GODDAMN!!!! this album is stinky!! i'm a huge beefheart fan, and i absolutely love "sufi and a killer". i'm definately gonna go to the store and BUY the record. thanks again for your beautiful work... forever.

  • Best description ever. :P

I've listened to the album. Definently need to listen to it a few more times for it to grow into it. Kind of reminds me of Mr. Bungle at some points.

  • gonjasufi is not my cup of water

  • Definitely, I've really dug the tracks he's released from it so far.

  • the beat on Ancestors makes me wanna pass out. it's so fuckin sick

  • That was one hell of a description.

  • Not really at first. But, now I'm digging it a lot after sinking into it a second time.

  • The Beefheart comparison makes a lot of sense, Don Van Vliet and Gonjasufi both live in the Mojave desert. This album is fantastic.

  • This is exactly what I was looking for! Just what I needed.

  • And congrats on the new needledrop! Very NICE!

  • I tried listening to this... and I deleted it. Was not my cup of tea... but I can't stop thinking about it though... ARGH! This feels like The Fiery Furances, when I deleted I'm Going Away like 4 separate occasions and re-downloaded each time before I liked it and kept it (good album, although I love EP). This may be the next album that'll do this to me.

  • hm. seems to me this is the first really mysterious album of this year.

this may be off topic, but have you heard the Holly Miranda album? It is produced by Dave Sitek and also quite interesting and beautiful.

  • Mmm. It's definitely good. I need to listen to it more though. I don't like it as much as you do but hopefully... hopefully I'll get there.

Love the name drop of Dilla. :D

  • That description was epic

  • holy shit, i've honest to god never immediately loved music as quickly and as much as this

  • WIN!

  • You can say that again! i made that comment after just hearing Kowboyz and Indians, but this is an incredible album, the only thing i can think to compare it to is Dirty Projectors' "The Glad Fact" and obviously Fly-Lo's music, but if there's anything else you'd say that "sends a shock through your music sensibilities" i'd be very interested in getting my hands on it

  • interesting description

  • Was the music as interesting? :-)

  • I love your description...

  • Thanks a million. :-)

  • thanks. i'll be sure to check this out when i'm in the right "mindset"

  • Yes, you might need that right mindset, sir. :-)

  • Captain Beefheart and J Dilla must create a album together.

  • Can you make it happen?

  • Hahaha...best album description ever. I now feel obliged to checking this one out. Looking forward to it!

  • Tell me if you dig it! :-)

  • OMFG! That description just kept getting better and better!

    Shit is dope as fuck!!

    THX TND

  • Glad ur digging it! :-D

  • Totally agree; I've been digging the album for 3 weeks now, you descriptions are spot on.

  • I love it the more I listen to it. I don't wanna call it early, but this could be an LP of the year. :-)

  • @theneedledrop Caribou's "Swim" is probably my fav album so far, I'd probably put Gonjasufi in 2nd though

  • This is the weirdest thing I've ever heard......and I fucking love it.

  • combining my favorite artists into a metaphor describing an album I really liked. A+

  • Hahaha. Glad I could do it for ya. :-)

  • wow, ive never liked any type of hip-hop at all. Or anything like it, but I have to say I really like this. pleasantly suprised

  • YESSSSSSSSSSS

  • Great record, great review as usual

  • thanks! :-)

  • Shut up, just shut up. You had me at Captain Beefheart.

  • Mind = blown. Hands down, my favourite of the year thus far. Thanks Anthony, you've just made my day!

  • Bwahahahahaa

  • Comment removed

  • Anthony, are you fucking on sycodelic drugs? that was the most fucking random description of an album evar!

  • @Greco678 "sycodelic"... Good god...

  • Doesn't he know it's "psychodelic"?

  • Yes, the most sycodelic drugs I could find!

  • Sycodelic? Hhahaha, it's "psychedelic" DUH!

  • it's almost and excuse my French a "mindfuck" (though this one is put into a low-fi setting). I do like it, even though there's a lot in this you can catch almost everything.

i consider it like watching a car crash in slow motion from 4 different angels and the crash-test dummies are made of lemons. a very "wtf?" album.

  • LEMONS!!! I lol'd

  • That description made me jizz in my pants.

  • Did you clean it up alright?

  • Ahhh, I love it when you get excited about music. It makes me go crazy too. :)

PS: Toughts of the new MGMT thingy? I think its awesome.

  • I'm gonna review it this week. :-)

  • @theneedledrop Good :)

  • that's a perfect description, I love that album. best for napping.

  • You nap to this? Or do you mean the Capt. BHart LP?

  • @theneedledrop this, tracks like Sheep or Dust provide the best napping time.

  • Thanks for getting me on this shit.

Also, can you get some plastic beach here?

  • he reviewed plastic beach

  • Oh, cool thanks

  • WooT!

  • Reviewed it a while ago. Check in teh uploads. :-)

  • This sounds amazing! And that description was classy lol. Anything with Flying Lotus is worth checking out imo

  • Totally. Are you gearing up for the new FL LP later this year?

  • i was really hopin u would review this. thanks.

  • Are you digging it as much as I am. It gets better the more I listen, frankly.

  • @theneedledrop yea, i thoroughly enjoyed this LP. I became very interested in gonjasufi when i heard him on Flylo's Los Angeles. Really lookin forward to sufi's future work.

  • gave this guy a listen as soon as i heard he had a solo album out. i really enjoyed his Flylo collaboration back on LA. There's a ton of duds on here, so I'd probably rate it more like a 6/10... but Sheep, Kowboyz & Indianz, and a few others have got to be in my top 10 songs so far this year.

  • Really? It's true, there were some catchier and more standout songs on the LP, but even the ones that weren't really "songs" had me in awe of the production. Just such a mindfuck of an album, heh.

  • 9/10 omg, this guy SUCKS. just cos' he's on warp and a black dude makin' indie music it doesn't mean he's any good.

  • No, you're right being black and being on Warp doesn't make him good. All the things I said in the vid for 7 minutes straight is what made it good.

  • @obligatorynagger

just because you don't like him doesn't mean he's any bad

  • I like your "cowboys and the Indians" tune! ha.

  • Was it close enough to the original? :-p

  • it was even better man!!

  • Halarious desription

  • that description was amazing!

  • I was waiting for this review, I noticed you were listening to this on Last fm :)

  • Yeah, I listened to it a lot, didn't I? :-p

  • i like your description of the sound.

*puts on list of things to get*

  • Haha, great review. I love this album too, especially that cowboys and indians song. It's just so diverse and awesome, you can't really ask for more than that.

  • yay we can finally agree on this one, love the record :P
