I've lived in Thailand near Chiang Mai for 7 years, and bike every day. There are great bike roads here, and some very bad ones. Also, bad times of the year, when the air is thick with smoke (Feb-Mar). The best map of this area is the free openstreetmap, for your GPS. I helped make this map, because every day I see bikers on very bad roads, when there are good roads near by. I encourage you to bike here, but get a good map and a GPS. For food and hospitality, it is the best.

The most dangerous day of the year by far! Drunks driving fast on wet roads and no one using their brains at all... yep, fun if you don't have any thought of safety. More people die every Songkran than the total number of people global who died of SARS or the latest WHO generated hype, Swine Flu.
