Did not mean to talk down to you. I'm sorry for that. Guess I'm just thinking back to times of being with this great aircraft. Anyway, thanks for your reply.
@yoyoyoyoshua Yes, and if you didn't keep wits your around you on the flight-deck, SHE would eat! I personally watched a young sailor go down the INTAKE one of these aircraft on the USS Kitty Hawk. At night. He survived believe it or not... His cranial helmet came off and went down the engine first..... FODDING the motor (we called it Foreign Object Damage).. it jammed the engine.
@yoyoyoyoshua No. And I saw that that video too. This happened about 1985, this was an A-7E. Trust me, I have 11 deployments overseas on carriers, over 30 years. I worked at least 8 years with the A-7, ashore and afloat. You had to be extra carefull working around her.

VA-46 Clansmen, Cecil Field, Med cruise on the Ike in 88. AT2 in IWT. The A7 was proof that if you put big enough an engine on a brck it can fly. Got to play with Gaddafi way on back then when we went over his "line of death." He sent a couple of jets toward us, but once the Alert 5 Tomcats had them painted with the fire control radar, they didn't want to play any more and tucked their tail between their legs and went home.
Was in AE5 in VA-192 Golden Dragons, USS Kitty Hawk CVAN 63, 1976-78.....
A-7E's 'Flight line T/Shooter'.......many cat shots...too many to even remember.....can still smell the flightdeck today...."Turnin' and Burnin".......
When I was a pilot in A-7's on the Kennedy, the engines would often come apart right after launch. Lost some good guys. The quick fix: run at mil power on the cat for 60 seconds. If it was still running, launch. We have the ICEMS (Int' Condition Engine Monitoring) system installed in the new engines; found a lube deficient bearing in the internals. Fixed it. All was well after that. I flew the B and the E on the Kennedy and Ike. Just a fine old bird, and she never let me down.
@CorsairKid1 Thank you for your service. I was an ADJ aboard USS Independence in the early 70s. The A-7 was an impressive 'bird' (that replaced the A-4) and was a bit scarey to walk around while turning up. I dont recall a time when any of these engines ever came apart but by that time the 60 sec mil power procedure may have been in place.
@CVAN687478 Yes, the best! Over in Lemoore we had VA147 Argonauts (my squadron for 8 years) VA22 Red Cocks (YACBAR), 94 Mighty Shrikes and VA113 Stingers and more outfits... Sigh.... some are gone now (VA97 Warhawks with the Blue Wedge tail, last A-7 squadron on west coast who are now flying oldest F-18's) and now sent to be de--comissioned before getting F-18Es. Miss them all... Spent most of my 30 year career with these great squadrons.
@TJDOZIER1 Thank you for posting it. it makes many of us more.. how should I say... content, fullfilled, in harmony with our lives now. The aircraft were beautiful, and for each one there are 20 old Shipmates I remember so well. Of course, many of them too are long gone.

All of the arm chair critics on YT fade away when just one vet, says,
I was there, thats my crew, I miss those days, etc.
Makes it all worth while for me.

Why did the US Navy have so many dedicated ground attack aircraft in service at once? They don't have any now!
kp66pk1616 2 years ago
The F/A-18 now covers the role of both fighter and attack....It's done this way to reduce Defense costs.
Look up the F-35 JSF (Joint Strike Fighter). It will be flown by the USN, USMC, USAF and our Allies...All in an effort to keep Defense costs down!!!!
