women can cover tom waits all they want, they just can't duplicate that sexy fucken voice. ohh yea 500 miles i'd travel that barefoot to see tom perform. oh yea, no homo
Ahh...the umistakable velvety tones of Thomas...one of my faves of his. And yes I like the Scarlet version as well......alright I own up - I'm just hoping she'll read this and instantly fall in love with me......
I was working on some appetizer trays in the basement where I work and listening to this song. A co-worker came up behind me and saw me bent over the table. With this song playing she said I looked like someone leaning over a coffin at a funeral. I said, "Exactly!"
I dunno about all this scarlet whatever talk, but I think i found me a new favorite tom waits song! Actually I can't say that he has so many good songs, but this is in the top ten no doubt!
Yes i also own the CD, but it sounds kinda muffled compared to other live CDs i have... like it's been recorded by someone standing in the audience and not from the mics - i nearly cried when i heard it.
Maybe i'm missing something, but to me it's not so obvious that it doesn't suck.
@gisbrei He's not saying the music sucks, people, he is just saying the audio quality is not great. I have to agree, though I still love the CD. Still, this series of songs off of NPR music has stunning quality. Thanks, 616Hell for putting this on youtube. It's some of the best music I have ever heard.
Regarding Waits' grotesqueness, regarding Orphans, regarding the man who's doing his thing along his life, the THING is always going to be the THING thats something unpolished, yet perfect something. If you want perfectness at the usual meaning, dont listen to him :) he and his music is perfect in his OWN way. That's the THING. It's Waits himself
My original comment was about the recording quality of the CD, then you start going on about your 5.1 and Tom Wait's character and a lot of stuff which i didn't say anything about...
Did it sound like i was making a personal attack on Tom Waits to you? Is that why you feel you need to insult me?
I saw him last year in AZ. unbelievable show. but, in regards to scarlett Jo, Check out this cover by Holly Cole. She put out an all Waits cover album called "temptation". search Youtube for "falling dawn" yea, the poster misspelled it....
....I do think however that, although her career in this genre of music doesn't really work, I must commend her on not conforming to the likes of every other actress 'wanna-be' singer turning to pop music.
I think Tom Waits is a good musician and that Scarlett Johanson obviously likes him as a singer too and wanted to sing this to honour him, but she doesn't realise that she won't be as good (and infact she doesn't even come close) and that she is seen as an a-list celeb who is in it only for the money.
This is absolutely brilliant. It's Waits in all his live performance glory. He's the greatest songwriter ever, and to anyone who still thinks he can't sing, just witness his genius here. As a singer myself, I just can't get over his strength, emotion, character, phrasing.....ah, forget it. Just listen. This guy's a rare treasure.

why dont YOU grow a pair?!!! You dont seem to like when people dont agree with you, jeez grow up fanboy!! why dont you just give a crap about Scarlett, you dont HAVE to like every cover of a song. just forget it and move on! jeez
Tom Waits' songs have to be experienced. His magic comes from living the songs first and then imparting the wisdom of the "other side" on to this side of consciousness.
There is no substitute for scars... nor should there be.
I did! It was amazing! I didn't have any money, so I went and literally BEGGED! And the nicest guy ever had a spare that he couldn't use. So he let me use it. A true saint of a man! What a gig! Also a friend of mine and me snuck in on one night! We saw the last 20 min, brilliant!
I hate to say this but at one point I didn't like him. Then he grew on me and now I will love his music until I die. He is the most poetic and real artist you will ever hear.
I'm a huge fan of both Tom Waits and Bob Dylan. I have to say that Tom Waits defintely has the right idea; only plays a few shows every couple of years but his albums get better and better. Dylan plays about 150 shows a year and, man, you can kind of tell; his albums have been kind of weak for the last 30 years.
Im so glad idiots like you dont like tom waits. I'm glad your brain is so broken you cant recognize style when it slaps you across the face with gravelly-voiced intensity.
there's a different version of this song i'm having trouble finding...it didn't sound like a live version but i could be wrong...? NOT the scarlett one! another tom waits one.
Could any song be any more beautiful? Just heartbreaking and so wonderful at the same time. Somebody once told me he was an aquired taste, but I loved him from the moment I first heard him.
god damn that is Incredibly great song and just to think of it...
Tom Waits is yet 58 years old, and he still plays live. And his performances are just perfect. Better than any other. Tom waits is the best act ever. !

Waits is perfect in his own way. You can say the music sucks, but you don't judge him with it. :) You judge yourself for your missing senses.
He is perfection in imperfection:) just listen to Orphans, all the 3 cd. You will know what I'm saying then.
Peace,
Tom.
