ONCE AGAIN I FIND MYSELF WISHING THAT TODAYS "EUROVISION SONG CONTEST" CANT BE LIKE IT WAS IN THE 70'S (EVEN THE RUNNER-UP SONGS (LIKE "MOUTH AND MCNEAL'S "I SEE A STAR") THAT WAS A HIT IN THE UK AS WELL (STILL SOUNDS JUST AS GOOD TODAY) NOWADAYS THE SONGS ARE "ONCE HEARD, EASILY FORGOTTEN"
@gilllew Agree totally. Eurovision way too big and full of crap nowadays. The 1st, 2nd and 3rd place songs - as well as UK entry all made UK top 10. Those were the days!
Estimated friend, if you want to listen again this song and an endless number of successes of the love I suggest you to visit Radio MUSICA PARA MIMOS - looks for his direction URL in Google ( search Musica para Mimos in Google)-. best romantic music of all the times in Internet, is great, is very good ...!!!
Abba of course won it with Waterloo on 24pts, but Italy came 2nd with "Si" performed by Gigliola Cinquetti on 18pts, and Holland 3rd with I See A Star on 15pts. It was staged at The Dome in Brighton, United Kingdom and the presenter was Katie Boyle. There were THREE countries finishing 4th on 14pts each and they were: United Kingdom ("Long Live Love" by Olivia Newton John,) Luxembourg ("Bye Bye I Love You" by Ireen Sheer) and Monaco ("Celui qui reste et celui qui s'en va" performed by Romuald.)
I quite agree, this should have won, but I think they played it for laughs, I think the Euro song contest has become a paraody of itself and should be ended.
This Dutch number is very nice and most of all it's a timeless song too. It's possible to wistle my favourite number of them. Also I whistled it in Holland's Got Talent 2010.
If they had song it in Dutch they could have won. Their personalities are a delight . We had Abba going Disco later that decade, it left an indifferent taste..
Yes. I did see this back then in 1974. And I do think this melody was the best. No doubt in my mind.
On the other hand...... would ABBA have got that much succes without their victory? And if not......... well, where would the popular part of music have been?
Guess the answer is blowing in the wind (using another favourite of mine).
If they had won, we could say "Mercy Jury"" similar to Udo Jürgens "Mercie cherie", unfortunately stupid people let ABBA win and we still suffer untill now in 2010 with ABBA-Revival-Shows everywhere
@plumduff31 I totally agree with you, this was my first memory of Eurovision and this will always remain my favourite Eurovision song, they did come close though, it was meant to be that Abba won that year though. Lol xx
Either this or Si should have won but against the visual effect of two women singing Waterloo and the fact that Sweden had not previously won - well, we know the result.
Mouth looks like he just jumped of a chopper...a dutch chopper.....
Refreshing in a way since nowdays all singers must look as they came out of a beauty parlour
and a goddamn catchy tune

1974 Eurovision is a movie needed to be made: politics, revolution, rising pop stars, stories, stories stories...and oh yeah, some band from Sweden.
With that said, this is a cute little song.

It was quite an historic song contest in 1974!
Italy refused to broadcast the televised contest on state television
France withdrew after the French President, Georges Pompidou, died
AND Portugal's entry started a revolution and military coup !!!

No chance against Waterloo or Si, but this reached the UK Top 10, as did Waterloo and Si (Si was recorded as Go in English).
Any notion that this could have beaten Waterloo is fanciful.

this is catchy, but you can see that abba had an advantage. waterloo is not an easy song to sing. still this is good.

@punchcar That makes Abba better artists, but doesn't make Waterloo, a better song. It's the songs they were supposed, to be voting for.

Later they split after ongoing bad treatment of McNeal. In 1980 she once again performed in the EVS then held in The Hague with the song Amsterdam.
