  • Does anyone have the song "Why Don't You Say So"

  • I saw them in Neptune in 1990 at the Brass or Green Parrot (I can't remember the name). HG was an anthem thru college and great to "turn the lights down to".

  • weevie833 -- how funny, I took one look at this and said "that has to be the Loop Lounge." Then I read your comment below. I saw WH at the Loop many times, wouldn't dream of missing them as they always put on a fantastic show... Still one of my favorite albums.

  • do you by any chance have the album 'Leaving Time'??? I lost all my vinyl years ago, and there was a great song on that- 'Up There Again' I'd love to hear!!

  • Esta banda es una joya de la musica POP de los 80. Os recomiendo que escuchéis también Island of Jewels. Una maravilla.

  • I wish robin wilson of the gin blossoms would remake this.........loved these guys*sigh*

  • @ajsjoberg Brilliant idea!

  • The first time I heard Pearl Jam I thought "Wow the singer of Winter Hours has a new band". saw these guys live in Atlanta at the Cotton Club. They did a version of "Bus Stop" as an encore. Great band and thanks for posting it!

  • That is the video I shot for the band and that was a looooong time ago when the technology was much more difficult, 1986? It was shot on FILM and edited on a LINEAR video editing system (no computers). Many of the shots had bad lens flare and I couldnt use them. The band didnt want to do anything fancy and they were really sleepy that day, lying down between shots. No budget, I got friends at DuArt to do the work for free. There is another edit. I heard it aired on MTVs 120 minutes.

  • @shakeythedj: Not "lens flare". That's the angel light over Joe's head.... I hope he knows how much he is missed....

  • This video was directed by Julie Covello (DJ Shakey) and was filmed at the LOOP Lounge in Passaic Park, NJ. This is not her cut, however (note the clumsy stumble around 2:23 - that was not in her original edit). It was transferred and edited at Duart in NYC. I DJ'd some music just prior to the shoot inside the club "to get them pumped" though I think Al Green was more on my playlist than theirs. I spent many dance hours at the LOOP, '86-'91.

  • Great band...remembering the days of Aldos!

  • I played this one to death during my days on college radio. Pity they didn't leave the world with a larger volume of material.

  • god what a great sound...Joe's great vocals and Mike's so great and SO sexy.

  • What was the Star Ledger article about? Winter Hours were a great live band. If you like them, give Carbon Leaf from Richmond VA a try. Nice guys that bring it live as well.

  • the band was featured from a blast from the past and the singer died some years ago

  • so sorry to hear about the loss of joe , read it in the star ledger today and it was a shock ,i remember hanging with bob and joe back in the aldo,s nightclub days and was also in a band at that time , u.s.chaos , a punk band that still plays today with almost the whole original lineup except for gary the guitar player that we lost to bone cancer a year and a half ago , winterhours was a rem style band before rem was ever heard of , this band could have gone to the top ...spike

  • @glenmann62, "before REM was ever heard of"? Um, not quite, although perhaps you hadn't heard of REM then. No offense -- I love both bands, but Winter Hours formed in 1983. I first saw REM live in Rochester, New York in late '81 or early '82, opening for the English Beat and touring in support of the "Chronic Town" EP. They were already on college radio at the time, especially "Gardening At Night."

  • The drummer is my drum teacher.

Wow, I can't believe how popular these guys were :D

  • @uchihasblood Hi! Which drummer? Albanese? If so, please tell John that Andrew from WNHU and Vermont says HEY!

  • I'm not sure who was whose dad and who was whose children ... but I *AM* quite certain that Winter Hours was *HUGELY* influential in regards to what would become my own musical career. Really. "Carpenter's Square," etc ... were formative bits. Great great songwriting. I even did a hideous, one-man interpretation of "Broken Little Man." But, don't ask to hear it! ... :-)

  • Damn, weren't we all so talented and good-looking? SUNY-Binghamton loved you. (Hi, Mike!)

  • mikes...a sexy mother thumper

  • i luv da bassb playah

  • One very hard working band they were. I knew them and knew how hard they wanted to hit big. They were so close, so close.

Magic mushrooms filled the air for all to see.

    Hi Mike.

  • my uncle is the bass player

  • I had no idea that Joe was gone when I first saw this and commented. How truly sad, Winter Hours never got their due, they were the best band from that time, and their music holds up so incredibly well. Joe and the band were absolutely amazing live too. I am just glad that I got to see them more than a few times.

  • What a treat to find this here! Ome of my favorite bands in the 80's. I got to meet them too, the nicest coolest guys, I hope that they are all doing well now.

  • Saw them live at the "Night Shift" in Naugatuck, CT a couple of times...what a great band. I hope some more of their live shows or other videos appear. They were so underappreciated in their time, it's true. I still play the vinyl, and hope more videos or live concert footage shall arrive on youtube soon! Pure beauty melancholy and class......

  • Thanx for the Video. WH were a pleasure to each and every show. RIP Joe and the clubs you played. The Grotto in New Haven and The Night Shift Cafe in Naugatuck, CT

  • I saw Winter Hours in concert back in Port Chester NY 3 times. I also had an opportunity to see them open for REM. I still have a couple of EP's/LP's(Hyacinth Girl)and a TShirt too! LOL I wish I took an 8mm movie of them. Hahaha Play it back on a reel-to-reel. I am glad there are more of us out there that appreciated this band.

  • I saw Winter Hours live several times in the 1980s, I was sure it was only a matter of time before they became huge. I'm still perplexed how that never came to pass, especially after seeing how great they come across in this video. Thank you so much for posting this video. It made my day!

  • Incredible band. Great, haunting song. The name says it all. Jangly Country Psyche. When is someone going to get the bright idea to give these guys the Nick Drake reissue treatment? Up there with VU & Big Star in my book.

  • Just thought of this band today for some reason after not having heard them in 20+ years and decided to do a YouTube search on them. Can't believe there's a video of them here! Always thought the lead singer's voice was superb, beautiful; the 80s 60s revival sounds were some of my favorites. Thanks for posting.

  • I'm listening to These Familiar Places daily. Thanks Michael and peace to Joe.

  • I forgot that we all used to wear our guitars so high! These guys were so kind to my old group Gigolo Aunts. They really took us under their wing and showed us how to be a better band. My eternal thanks to Michael C!

  • Great to see this video posted. Saw them whenever they came to DC. Always brought someone that didn't know them, they always created a new fan. They were so good live and always drew a big crowd. I've burnt my vinyl to disc and the music really holds up despite being produced on a low budget. Very sorry to read above that Joe is gone, had a long chat with him at the HFSestival in '90. Does anyone know what happened to him? Great to see (hear) his music living on.

  • Bless you for putting this video on YouTube. What an appalling loss to music it was when Joe died, but what a wonderful legacy to leave for us.

  • Whole heartedly agree with the comments below as to how this band slipped through the cracks. BTW... I miss that cover of 'All Along in the Watchtower'. It had and equally cool video with it. Does anyone know where it might be able to be found.

  • That is an aweomse version of All Along the Watchtower. I had it on vinyl but don't have a turntable any longer. Didn't know there was a video for it- would love to see it.

  • My God, you don't know how long I have waited to see this video! The last time it was shown on MTV was in 1999 during the A-Z marathon and I missed it! Thank you!!!

  • Always thought these guys should have been huge. Saw them a couple of times in Ct. Shame how some bands made it and some just didn't. Always liked the song "Island of Jewels" Will have to pull out the vinyl and have a good listen.

  • Wow, I haven't seen this in eons. They were such a GREAT band. I knew Joe, and between knowing him and loving this band, watching this is kind of hard, but I'm glad to see it again regardless. They were SO underrated....

  • Mike - Thank you for putting this video up on YouTube. A very important piece of progressive/alternative 1980's history for a lot of us. Winter Hours were one of my fave bands next to early REM and the Smiths. Your music will live in thru the fans and websites like this one.

  • Does anyone get the feeling the Gin Blossoms ripped off these guys bigtime?! LOL! Maybe not but those catchy Gin Blossoms songs are almost the spitting image of some Winter Hours tunes.

  • Did these guys have a song called "Halo"? Lyrics went like, "Halo, blessed me my soul to keep".

  • So you can ask yourself, is this a good record contract, the answer is no, but if you ask yourself if this is one the great bands that slipped thru the cracks, the answer is yes. Joe lives on.

  • These guys were awesome. I was always surprised they weren't bigger. It was almost like there could only be one big band- REM, who the media hyped up big time, and everyone else had to take a backseat. REM was a great band no doubt but I've always thought The Miracle Legion, Connells, and Winter Hours were other bands from back then that should have been bigger. Thanks to the person who posted this video. Great, great song.
