i can never warm up to most american sopranos singing italian repertoire,..... the american accent creeps in and ruins the expressiveness,......... Apart from that,.... Miss mitchel takes the cup even from price herself....
I am a huge fan of Miss Price's work but Mrs. Mitchell definitely blows this out of the water. The color, roundness, overall evenness of tone, and soulful spirit alone definitely places Mrs. Mitchell among the top interpreters of this role lyrically. Aside from the occasional poorly placed breath--that unfortunately interrupts Verdi's expansive line--this is a tour de force of ostentatious vocal fireworks. Girl, if you have to breath, breath. Sure, it's a little oversung but hell it is beautiful
She does a great job here! I'm so tired of opera queens comparing every black soprano to Price. Do your homework and LISTEN!! Other than a couple of extra breaths at the end of the aria, this is lovely. You don't have to love it, but appreciate what each artist brings to a role. This is a killer aria..... compare other versions here on youtube, and you'll find this is one of the best. I own Price's recording , and she takes liberties as well!
A beautiful an elegant concert performance, but lacking the poetry and musicality of this setting of Donna Sol in Victor Hugo's play. I don't believe that Leona at any time ever achieved the musical and poetic elegance or even the dramatic credibility of the great Leontyne Price.
@benderpm You don't need to say that. We all know there was only one Price. It is a shame that every black singer who comes along has to hear this same silly comparison.

@CallasAfrica Callas and Ponselle were American sopranos. I'd say their Italian was pretty damn good :)
