Sorry, but it sounds like a bunch of shade tree mechanics here. I (a 24 year ASE master mechanic with my own AAA approved shop for the last 18 years) have seen this problem first hand and used the Champion plugs with no problem. Push the stock plugs past 120k miles and you will have nightmares getting them out. TRUST ME!!!!
After only 20,000 miles the Champion Plug 7989 has caused many problems for the Ford 5.4L 3V. Trust me, you do not want to use these plugs! Go with the redesigned Motorcraft plug for the BEST possible performance.
The coils go out too.The rotunda tool is out of date.Lisle has the better updated tool kit out.The tsb does not work, plugs still break. My Matco dealer stocks the Lisle kit and sells them right away to Ford garages.
@organdonor2b - And the 11 page Ford TSB is overkill? Replace a set of the OE Motorcraft/Autolite plugs in one of these engines and let me know where you think the bull is.
i fucked up i need help asap while putting a CHAMPION sparp plug it broke in the threads a cant take it out i did as box said and did only 1/2 turn please help
1/2 a turn is for a new gasket seat plug, the 7989 is a taper seat plug, which the box says you only turn, 1/16 of a turn after finger tight, no wonder you snapped it off!
well, that's just silly. Lots of people use fram filters and champion plugs. The nice thing is that consumers aren't forced to buy one brand. I've had great luck with all the aftermarket brands.
Glad someone has finally fixed the design flaw of that plug on the 3v engines. However i also have been reading that the Champion 7989 plugs causes misfires.
I'm wondering if the champion plug is over engineered(being double platinum as opposed to being single platinum). Maybe the extra platinum causes the champion plug to perform poorly.
I believe the misfiring has been related to the Champions "old style" plug design. If you look at the ground electrode on the Champion plug,it is the old "J" style ground electrode unlike Fords Newer design in where the OEM Ford plugs are a closed loop "U" design.I have heard that the Champion plugs require maintenance in where you must remove them regularly and re-gap the plug. You do not have to do this with the Ford OEM plugs.
You "can" easily re-gap, but since its double platinum, there would be virtually no gap-growth for 80,000+ miles. If anything the OE plug with the "U" would suppress spark/flame growth.

@1stinkbear Fram filters and Autolite plugs are made by the same company. Champion plugs aren't bad at all....they work great.
