@madsouljaz: I don’t get your point what’re you trying to explain to the Greek about Cyprus?
The Cyprus is one country the rest is occupied by the Turkish forces with the bless of Anglo-Americans they helped them during the Turkish invasion of Cyprus ,WTF is south or north?
@madsouljaz: There is only one Cyprus the rest is occupied by the Turkey ,I am a Greek and I know better than every one what happened in Cyprus when this country attacked by Turko-Anglo-American(The usual well known combination) forces.
Some of it is ignorant hatred, but I think the people who find themselves unable to come to grips with where The Artist Formerly Known as Cat, chose a religion whose ideas on women and freedom of speech and freedom of religion, and sense of justice are so incompatible with American beliefs as to trigger something deep within them that requires them to comment beyond just the beauty of this wonderful music, and the largely wonderful man who made them, and found himself a happy place to be.
@eldadmi : He’s quarter Greek? You mean half because his Greek-Cypriot father you saw means Greek from Cyprus but as you see he didn’t take anything from his Swedish mother side hahahaha!!
When I was a few years younger I thought that he was sooo hot. Looking back now at these pictures vindicates my opinion. Man, he was gorgeous. I still love him and, also I would love to meet sawis3's dad too.
Bravo!! Greek Pride!! Look he started out as a greek orthodox christian and changed many times but that doesnt mater!!! ITS THE MUSIC!!!! get over it guys!! look after all this he still says hes proud to be Greek regardless what god he believes in!!!!
Just thought I'd mention that my 4 year old now loves this song because I play it at home. I still listen to Elvis, Frankie Laine, Judy Garland, the Beatles and many more artists from the 50's onwards because my parents played music in our house all the time, although I wasn't born until 1970.
This man made every woman I knew in the Uk love Greek men in the 70s. I went to Uk and was invited to go to London cause thats where all the gorgeous Greek men were (bearing in mind I was just 16). Just having got off a ship staffed by Greek men !!!!! well ... I gave it a miss . But Cat was always my Greek/Cypriot Man , the others paled in comparison (and he could bloody sing a good tune too) lol xx
I agree. As a Greek mom I know my 5 sons never had to search for God. But I still love Cat/Yusef still. For a number of years I had a problem with his conversion but I got past it. It was my problem and I had to realy analyze my feelings and get over it. He is still a good man with a wonderful heart and soul and his music is a gift to the world.

@froggy2632 I agree he is a good man with a good heart. Just a shame to "lose" him. I guess I'm still mourning it all these years later, and wonder if he could have found what he was looking for in Orthodoxy with the right help. Those of us born into it can really take it for granted, and don't realise what a pure version of Christianity it is. We think it's strict like Catholicism but if you study the church's history it is pleasantly surprising how democratic an institution it is.
@dragonlady1970 I am sorry for the multiple posts yesterday. I rarely do this and I could not tell if it took. LOL I feel like we lost him too. But who knows if he would have been on the same path to find his music and God if he had been as strong in Orthodoxy. He might have been just another erudite Greek that owns a restaurant, fine as that is, he may not have ever become Cat Stevens, and that would have been the bigger loss to humanity.
Many Orthodox Christians go on spiritual journeys. Same go deeper into The Faith. Some wander and come home. Some wander and become lost yet they think themselves happy. All can write beautiful music. Do you know of St Ephraim the Syrian or St Yared of Ethiopia or that Russian saint of not so long ago whose name escapes the mind right now?
As a convert to Orthodox Christianity I too mourn his departure yet we must remember his mother was Lutheran. (Traditionally the Church would not have permitted such a marriage though assumably his father obtained permission.)
Unfortunately, not every local Church on earth is as perfectly glorious as the Church Triumphant. This has disillusioned many yet still many others have found the Rock to be steadfast.
Without meaning to be derogatory, it seems as though the right of ijtihad (ie interpretation) in Sunni Islam is used by some as an excuse to believe whatever they want. In Orthodox Christianity, one can not be so easily tossed about upon the waves.

@syeedsy what hatred? He's a human being, as are we all. He's definitely a better man than I am. He has his flaws and he puts his pants on one leg at a time, but I respect his convictions. Does the following quote sound familiar to you Americans; 'I may not agree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it' (Thomas Payne (read your own history)).
I don't understand some of the Cat Steven's hatred that creeps into these posts. If anyone has searched for God his entire life it's been this man. He nearly died of Tuberculosis when his career was starting to take off. Also, I've read his statement's following the WTC horror and he denounced everything about terrorism. THANK-YOU for posting this song. It's beautiful. A true artist. Compare him to the pap that's forced on people today. No contest.
It's not true, I hope you read more about this incidence. Stevens clarified the situation on many occasions, and i recommend to visit his website to read more!!
Cat Stevens TALKS peace,,,, but his actions speak louder than words. Yusuf (cat) has performed for Al Qaida fundraisers, donated his own money to Hamas so-called "charities", and supported murdering Salmon Rushdie, ON FILM.
Cat Stevens isn't all of a sudden a terrorist or supporter of terrorism because of his choice in religion. Since his turn to Islam he has written MORE songs with themes of peace and love. I suggest you look into him more than just judging based on religion. It is people like you that make this world a racist and hating place.
Excellent slideshow. Always loved the Greek in this song! Beautiful and lively. He was Greek and Swedish and born in England and his music has always been celestial. I do hope he has kicked the habit since many of the photo's from his younger days show him holding a cigarette.... LOL
Thank you very much for the offer, but I spent a long time in Greece ( had a Greek boyfriend..sigh!!!! ) and I have a huge collection of Greek music. Problem is that once it starts playing I forget everything else. Thats a very kind offer though, Efkaristo para poli.
I think , that Cat Steven's trasformation to Islam (in depth) ,have a symbolically meaning. He make a very hard step-to throw off his personal hate and show the people that every of us(Christians,Muslims and other...) try to find your own way to throw off the hate.
Cat Stevens(Στέφανος Γεωργίου)said: "My upbringing was very anti-Muslim. Essentially, the Greeks and Turks were enemies, so I adopted the stance of my Greek Cypriot father and hated everything about the Turks, including their religion: 'Islam', whatever that meant."
cat is amazing but he is a fuckin joke! come on who converts to halahalism,.. . the halahala's i know wont admit there a halaghala.

Reject evil people. Allah Akbar .
DON'T SUPPORT TERRORISM.

Alguna día volveré a Grecia y beberé retsina a la sombra de un emparrado mientras miro a los ojos de la niña de mi vida.

His most beautiful song in my opinion btw. Shows how beautiful the Greek language can be.

LOL

Unfortunately,
Yusuf DID support the order to kill Rushdie. It's hypocritical, because he wrote "Peace Train". Only an idiot would deny it, because it was ON FILM.

I think , that Cat Steven's trasformation to Islam (in depth) ,have a symbolically meaning. He make a very hard step-to throw off his personal hate and show the people that every of us(Christians,Muslims and other...) try to find your own way to throw off the hate.
asdasd1957 3 years ago 2
Cat Stevens(Στέφανος Γεωργίου)said: "My upbringing was very anti-Muslim. Essentially, the Greeks and Turks were enemies, so I adopted the stance of my Greek Cypriot father and hated everything about the Turks, including their religion: 'Islam', whatever that meant."
asdasd1957 3 years ago
to abandon your whole career for something like religion is so brave i think he's great and he is free to think what he likes
what the point in slating him?can't touch this guy he's amazing
