@MarcTaker what's kind of interesting is in the first chapter or two of DKR, he has a more traditional appearance. Batman's older, but he's still pretty slim and realistic looking. As the story goes on, the artist distorts and exaggerates his features, eventually becoming that iconic appearance that we know as the Dark Knight Returns look for Batman. I'm not saying it's bad, I think it's a pretty cool design, it's just that not many artists would do something like that. It's unique.

If you look at Batman Year One and The Dark Knight Returns they are both the same costume, both based on Frank Miller's works, which are amazing, in spite of the fact he's turned into a psychotic asshole the past decade. And yes, in The Dark Knight Returns he is much more like The Punisher (without killing people) in attitude and awesomeness with 75% Batman thrown in. He even beats up Superman!

"Fatman" actually is the comic which inspired Keaton's Batman movies with it's darkness and removing of Batman's "campy image." He defeated Superman in an epic battle with what would be his answer to Iron Man's suit in many ways. Though Batman Beyond's suit is great, too. Which also Bruce used in his late 60s with varying degrees of success. I've read some great unofficial stuff that stuck with the "him having no heart problems" angle from The Dark Knight Returns.

Basically what makes The Dark Knight Returns Batman so cool is the idea that, yeah he is in his mid 50s (and in the Dark Knight Strikes Back, he's in his early 60s, so it could be either one). Which I actually like using for this storyline. Talia and Catwoman are in their 40s, Tim is clearly in his early 20s or 19 at the youngest, Nightwing is just about to become Batman (google Batman Inc, that's where the other costume comes in, notice how that one Batman looks old too)

@johnspidermanskates Don't really like it, it's too armoured. I think for "modern" aesthetics with Batman, the original Batman costume featured in this was the finest rendition. That was just right. To me, the Dark Knight costume always looked like a cosplay. But, then again suppose it was going for a more realistic approach in which a hero would need layers of armour. Just, doesn't really fit too well.

@RandomCommenterful I think even Batman's characterization worked in Miller's world because he was showing a Batman pushed to the point of desperation where he has lost his inhibitions. Also I think it was trying to show the evolution of the criminal mind, saying that, in the future, criminal threat could evolve to such a point where Batman needs to descend to their level to defeat them.

@jtrfpl The characterization of superman wasn't bad. He acted more or less like I expected him to act. I personally thought the art style fit the tone of the overall story. My only major complaint was Batman's characterization. There was one part where Batman throw a man out through a window and the guy gets glass pierced through his arteries. Batman tells the guy that unless he tells him what he wants to know, he was going to let the guy bleed to death AND HE SAYS IT WITH A SMILE ON HIS FACE.
