I always felt so bad for the dumb sh*t their record company made these guys do (especially Rob haha) in these videos. Never did their songs justice (except for Waydown maybe, which caught many of our young teen eyes back then).
This is one of the best songs ever and was always so much fun to see/hear live. Will love it when I'm 90!
if only youtube wasnt such lames i would upload this in louder quality. its weird whena fan has a louder/better version of the video than the damn band itself. get the fuck with it youtube. jesus.
Way cooler than a lot of American rock bands of the 1990s that dominated the charts when record stores, MTV, magazines, & radio stations gave the boot to a lot of English, Euro, and other bands from around the world. Between the late 1980s and up through the late 1990s we had crappy American bands shoved down our throats. Im not saying all US bands were terrible I did like some but most of them stunk even though MTV shoved it in our faces 24/7 along with fake and phony so called reality shows.
lol - totally. I don't know why video directors in the 90s needed to create these huge dumb stories with all these characters. Their music is dark & vivid as it is and so the videos shoulda just been dark and people-less. :)
@Unlockedgrooves Ha ! My thoughts exactly !!!! I was just thinking that, scrolled down and there was your comment top of the list...Synchronistic !! I really dug this song years ago-this video doesn't do it justice !
@huskyjerk My B.A. is in Radio/TV, done video. I'm a working musician over 40 years. If you think the video is anywhere as important as the song and the band, like I said, head back to MTV. The video is a priority why? And if I'm listening to Catherine Wheel, do I have bad taste?
@stratwz Ok....I don't doubt your expertise. However, I am from the school of thought that, if you are a musician, your video needs to match the artistic quality of the song. Hence, a wonderful song deserves a great video. And this is a wonderful song. By the way, I love Black Metallic. Can't get enough of that. It's video? Just ok. I see your point of priorities. Still, I would want my heroes to reflect a proper quality in all they do. Here, I think the boys failed.
actually, if anyone sucked it would have to be nirvana... one of the most way overated bands of the 90's. i ask you to really listen to their music, not much there. on the other hand catherine wheel was overlooked and did not receive much air play as i recall too bad because musically speaking they blew the shit out of nirvana. as for coldplay, they're a great band also just a different kind of music
All of you Catherine Wheel and shoegazing fans, hear me! we need to start to share this rare and glorious sound to the rest of the world! seriously, it's a fucking shame that these guys are not as famous as Muse, green day, metallica, iron maiden or AC/DC! so lets start new shoegazing wave! share and tips this to anyone who like good and loud guitars with awesome lyrics! who is with me?
This song still blows me away after all these years....(the Catherine Wheel had such an open, euphoric sound that seemed to be lacking in other rock music). It was and still is like tapping into another realm every time I hear it............Sonic eargasm.
Members of Interpol and Death Cab For Cutie both admitted to Catherine Wheel's Rob Dickinson that their bands probably wouldn't exist if it weren't for Catherine Wheel's album Chrome.
the early and mid 90s.... such a confusing time where everyone was inquistive about the future... filled with angst, confusion, and discernment- trying to find an identity & feeling that society was trying to encompass them to fit into a majority. flash foward to a present time where people are gnawing to fit into a standard.
The biggest problem with Catherine Wheel is that you need to own the cd, the sound is so dense that it just isn't the same listening to it in youtube or on the computer in general. Overall epic song, wonderful sound, though Strange Fruit is still my favorite from Chrome
@TimmyOswald: Right, when I think of this song, I am used to hearing it on a big system so the guitars are crushing, which is why they stand out to me versus other melody-forward (uhm...wimpy...) Britpop bands. Here this sounds like a polite commercial-friendly, vocals-in-front mix.
@TimmyOswald This is true. The guitars especially have a rich, saturated sound that can only be appreciated fully with the CD or at least FLAC's or something. Doesn't hurt to have a nice system to push the sound either. Unfortunately in this era of shitty audio standards (128kbps mp3's, dear God), bands that took the time to develop an ear pleasing sound and produce their albums well will not be appreciated fully.
@gyrick1 Who gives a sh*t what Rolling stone Magazine thinks ! Remember what Frank Zappa said about them: A magazine from people who can't write for people who can't read.
@gyrick1 And one of the few actual good songs of the early 90s as well. Too much CRAP was worshiped by major magazines and MTV back then. They didn't like anything that actually sounded cool or deep. Though the grunge movement of the early to mid 90s sounded deep it was rather flat, uninspiring, and overly dark. Grunge to me sounded like they were trying way too hard to compete with European & Australian Alternative rock. What in the 1990s a lot of American bands tried to pretend to be.
@gyrick1 some bands in the 90's were stepped over. What a shame I can name several that should have been playing stadiums instead of small clubs like this band. I miss the 90s alternative scene.
