  • would be an entirely different band without him. he sets the pace, and they follow... excellent!

  • That one riff, man.

    You know the one.

  • i think the whole thing is just beautiful and the drummer did a good job ... i believe they are really good friends and it´s not about the sound they give us just about the feeling they have in these minutes when they play their songs...it´s the same by my own band and i love it more than the whole fucking planet we´re livin on .

  • at least he keeps time

  • FUUUUKIN TUNE as the kids say!

  • He's really not a bad drummer, the sound quality of this recording doesn't do him justice.

  • Hes not a bad drummer, its a poor recording.

  • awesome.

  • may be he looks like an amateur drummer..but ı think he puts very interesting idea into this sound..also they like simple, minimal music...he doesnt have to be paul boustaph or something..

  • i don't think it's that he's a bad drummer. The audio is bad on this vid and maybe the drums aren't mic'd well

  • ok, not the best of pelican, but it's the whole thing, not how the guitar is or how the drum is.

  • this song is fucking great off the album....not so much here.

    the drummer is obviously bad

  • I personally think Bryan isn't a great drummer by himself. However, I feel that he makes Pelican. He is the one makes the songs sound how they do. and I think that's fucking incredible.

  • Iamlameduck show me that you're better drummer mate.

  • Drummer is terrible.

  • Wrong.

  • Listen, man. Some people just don't have the ear for tempo or vibe. It's okay that the drummer is one of them. And it's okay that you can't acknowledge that. You obviously can't recognize good drumming if you think this is good. It's funny because when I first heard Pelican, aside from the huge Isis "influence," I couldn't believe how bad the drumming was. Apparently the critical response across the board is in agreement with me. I'm not alone in being right.

  • Thats an opinion first of all. I do know good drumming (Don Caballero, Explosions in the Sky, This Will Destroy You) We just have a different opinion on the matter, so this argument will probably never be solved. I will say thanks for not swearing and name-calling like most people do in arguments on YouTube.

  • His tempo is terrible. His sense of dynamics is pisspoor. What is good about this guy aside from his "ability" to keep things simple?

  • The drums match the beginning of the song quite well. The other parts are 'ok' to 'not the best.' Spaceship Broken Parts Needed is really good. I assume you will blast me for saying that. Like I said before, we have a different opinion on the matter, so this argument will probably never be solved.

  • What's wrong with keeping things simple?

  • Absolutely nothing. I love the drummer from Spoon. I myself am a very simple drummer, writing-wise. But when you keep it simple and it still sounds like shit... that's when you know it's time to get a new drummer. He has no pocket. I'm not the only person who feels this way.

  • It's because he doesn't do "simple" well. Like I've said, the drummer from Spoon is "simple" and also "great." This guy has no pocket.

  • ur a dumb ass....

  • Wow, after watching this i need to pick up my jaw from the floor. A perfect example of post-metal excellence, up there with the best;Neurosis, Jesu, Isis

  • pretty sure pelican are either touring or just toured with isis :)

  • there finishing up a tour now and then going on tour with isis, get to see them twice in 2 months

  • ya tombs, pelican and isis until mid-summer..i saw them at the black cat in d.c and they all wooped ass..check out my 3 new vids and rate from sat. nite in D.C.!!!!!!

  • Boy, I wonder if they ever listened to Mogwai and Built to Spill at the same time.

  • this band is pretty good, but i dont kwo abotu the drummer

  • ah...I saw these guys for the first time in Dayton at a Deftones concert. They blew my fucking mind. I think they did an encore just for me, as I was the only dude that really seemed to dig them.

  • I agree that the riff @ 3:30 rules lives.

    Perfect performance tbh

  • yeah man,the riff at 3:30 is the best riff in the world.

  • Fucking love the riff @ 3:30!

  • simply amazing band!

    fix'd

  • pelican has four members.

  • This is too good to have been written sober.

  • yesterday in rome they really kicked ass

  • They finished writing their new album, and have a split with Young Widows coming up!

  • awesome, one of the few bands that play what they like instead of giving a shit about genres.

  • man they look like theyre having fun. i love it

  • the first 5 minutes are godlike.

  • @JesusOnHeroin just like the other 4 mins!

  • @JesusOnHeroin this actually exists

  • Man, these guys are amazing. They sound exactly as they do on the album live!

Anyone know what tuning Pelican uses? It sounds particularly low.

  • I'm pretty sure they record all their albums live, with minimal overdubbing - Which would explain the closeness in sound. Mono do the same thing :)

    Great band!

  • I'm pretty sure it's the same as Isis, which is Dropped B.

    B-F#-B-E-G#-C#

  • the tuning is B-E-A-D-F#-B..!

i had the very same question and i asked the band in myspace. :D

  • I personally use the B-F#-B-E-G#-C# and it works like a charm.

But the tunings are very similar.

The one I use is more suited to the fast root/5th hammer-ons.

  • best song on that album... blows me away.

  • this is definately there best song

  • maybe my favorite pelican song.

  • I love "the fire in our throats will beckon the thaw"

its so much better than the other cd

  • I have no words ... this MUSIC makes "music" you like trivial.

  • This was a response to Autocant or whatever the hell the screen name user was. Sorry, this reads odd by itself.

  • yeah pelican and red sparowes are my favourtie bands

  • hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!

  • Why compare them to other bands? they are just cool.

  • 3:27-4:56

one of the best riffs in music-EVER!

    definitely my favorite Pelican song!

  • Katatonia, Opeth and Octavia Sperati sound absolutely nothing like Pelican. Empires, Russian Circles, and Snowblood are pretty similar bands to Pelican. Not to mention the more popular bands such as Isis, Neurosis, Cult Of Luna and even Mastodon at times. Though I prefer Pelican to all of those.

  • you forgot Red Sparowes... butcher right, Pelican are the kings of all Post/Sludge Metal

  • i still don't see why the call them metal.. people are so lost in genres.

  • Didn't say it was the same style, I just think they go together good in ipod

  • What a FUCKING great song. It always gets to cheer me up.

  • Music is free...it's not about what should and shouldn't be, it's about what IS. Pelican rule.

  • pelican like to emphasize a more optimistic view. That is why they usually play in a major key (I believe B major is the most common) and this further emphasizes their theme of nature and optimism. Autumn is a great season but Summer is the metaphorical life. I hope that makes sense... I'm sorry if I wrote in a very incoherant manner.

  • All major keys are also minor keys.

  • Yes, I am sorry I didn't explain everything in depth or anything. I just wanted to explain to someone who commented that the title is correct and Pelican try hard to emphasize optimism in their music. Yes, B major is ... A flat minor? Hell, I'm slipping on my music theory ...

  • Yeah.

  • Katatonia is awesome but they are sounding more commercial with every new song they make, Opeth sound nothing like this... never heard Octavia Sperati... what about them?

  • I like Katatonia. I think they are refining their abilities.

  • Octavia Sperati is a female-fronted European modern rock/metal band. They don't scream a lot, the music is good.

  • Chevelle, Opeth?? Ha ha.

  • I didn't say they sound exactly the same, I said if you like this try them.

  • Katatonia kicks ass.

  • Oh Lord!!! this is awesome music!!!! love them they sound so fucking good it makes me want to trash all my death metal albums and just listen to them the whole day!

  • What do you want for them? What have you got.

  • I'll take them!

  • @DeathMetalforever That must mean a lot coming from someone named DeathMetalforever. As long as you don't trash your Opeth albums ;)

  • @FakeHipHopSMD LOL... nooooooooo my Opeth albums noooooo lol... You reply to my comment which was 3 years ago and I still listen to Pelican!!!!

  • anybody got any idea if there are any available clips of Pelican playing "The Woods". It's my all time fave Pelican track. Fucking love them.
