  • should have got a v8 ute

  • @kyleisreallycool

im sorry mate, not ever1 likes big chassis and big engines and big dicks and big tattooes with big muscles and big cartons of VB and big women, big houses with big ego's

  • @REXADKTN I was kidding I love subbies

  • Not really an explanation...

  • char19822 - The Evo's have much stronger blocks than any Subaru, because the Evo has an iron block and Subaru's use aluminum blocks. However, and this is key, when you're going into HP numbers that high, it comes down to rod/piston strength more than block strength. If you're building a drag car (i.e max HP), get an Evo. If you're a real driver and want a twisty road brawler, go for the STi (MOAR TORQUE!). 400whp is more than enough unless you wanna race lambo's and the like on the highway.

  • @rallifreak well said, the interesting point is the new EVO has an alloy block!

  • i understand that i seen an autocar test saying the version 5 didnt seem as quick as they thought it would, the aussie one,so maybe your right,im sure your company run a great service, as my posts are not aimed at you, just so people understand that its not just the ej20 that has these problems, and subaru produce great drivers cars.

  • hey thats fine, we all learn by talking!

  • Im a subaru mechanic, and wont ever recommend taking out the factory ecu,do you know how much money subaru spent developing that ecu,the timing is retarded for a reason, bypassing these measures leads to engine damage, simple cheaper soultion is water injection no det,can an ecutek ecu stop you ringing a bearing dont think so threat an ej20 engine right and dont go wasting 1000's of pounds on unnecessary upgrades, subaru spent millions designing parts why spend money on cheap replacement parts .

  • well said, we agree, hence why we use and recommend EcuteK to retune the FACTORY ecu

yes the reason why the ECU retards the timing is becuase the Aussie model has too much base timing to run on 98 ron fuel, we adjust the base map to suit the lower spec fuel here and hence why the car runs so much better.

Bottom line the factory ecu is custom tuned to suit the local market, which was never done spot on in the first place..

  • @MrMrdavehawkeye :Hi there

I read you're a Subaru mechanic. I'd like to ask for some advice , if you don't mind.

I just bought a new Sti, I didn't know about this bearing issue they have. Is there anyway to look after this engine? Anyway to prevent the big end bearing popping?

Why does this happen? Is the bearing low quality or does it come down to oil starvation in corners? Why doesn't Subaru solve this issue?

  • The world always have two sides, engine too. An EJ engine keeps center of gravity low by compromise short stroke piston, longer header, longer intake manifold (even longet with front mounted intercooler setup). With this setup the main bearing will got a lot more stress than any other engine at high loads. Most of poor EJs dead because the driver brutally increase the boost without proper mod, low quality oil, low octane fuel, etc...

Everything has its own limit. So use it wisely.

  • i have version 6 type r and i havent had a once of trouble, make sure the fuel your getting is good quailty, all turbocharged cars experiencs det, evos suffer bad crank walk, there a highly stressed engine and need more looking after then a normal car

  • In australia, even the best (pump) fuel wont stop det. The car was tuned to run on 100 ron jap fuel and Subaru Australia, never spent enough time re mapping the ecu.

the best solution to fixing this is a complete ECU upgrade with EcuteK and this improves power AND reliability.

cha nces are many owners are not aware of this as the OEM ECU pulls out sooo much timing the car runs no where near its potential. and in MANY cases it still pings!

  • what a complete cock, impreza engines are as reliable as any other, the flat four configuration of the engine means it doesnt like chavs doin donuts or drifting because of oil stravation, change the oil regularly and dont rag the cock off it and it will last 200,000km without a rebuild if i see that aussie fucker i will punch him square in the face,

  • the MY99 / 00 is well known for poor engine tuning by subaru and suffers badly from det in Australia.

    This is even factory std

  • When you say engine weakness, how weak do you mean, and have they solved it in the later models (I heard the version 9 sti has a pretty strong engine)? Is it likely to go under daily driving and would you need an engine rebuild every year or more if you thrashed it every day (whilst observing proper warming up/cooling down)? I wanted to buy one a while ago but the engine blew (smoke and everything) after 10 minutes of the test drive on a 96 type ra sti and it sounded fine to start with.

  • depends on how they are treated and how they are modified

  • Guess what I really wanted to know is which has the strongest engine evo IX or any late model impreza when modified to 350-400 hp with bolt ons (ecu, intercooler, exhaust, intake) and driven hard on a daily basis? Any more power and you'd be looking at a built motor from what I've been told.

  • Hmm hard to say, they are both great engines, depends on personal choice.

Its not really an ewasy question for me to answer without having the car here and the end result

  • stop these stupid promos..you tube isnt a forum for adverts.

  • Huh??

  • Duh??
