thanks for the vid, im just picking my guitar up again after about 5 years of downtime, i used to play all metal but now im trying to learn some campfire type stuff, any chance you could put up a video of you playing the whole song?
your tips on strumming are very helpful too thanks again!
He has given the BEST guitar strumming pattern instructions and chords changes. I learnt a lot from you Sir, Thank you. I am in my mid 70's and started playing only 6 months ago.
i'm really new to guitar (a late starter - i'm in my thirties!) and this was just at the right level for me. Thanks for taking the time to teach this. :)
Yea, I see what you mean. I think it one of my first videos. You turn the camera on then suddenly get tongue tied. lol ! I guess it was okay in the end. Seems like lots of positve feedback. Thanks for your feedback bro !
I see a lot of people teaching this song using a caper on the 2nd fret... but Denver didn't use a caper, nor did he start on a G (or C) chord. I've watched his hands repeatedly and he plays a A, F#m, E, D, A (verse) and A, E, F#m, D, A (chorus). I'm interested in playing this song with others eventually and want to learn it the "correct" way. Or at least the most common way. Am I just completely on the wrong page or....? Thanks for your advice in advance.
John Denver must have played the song in the key of A. My 1st chord in the song is a G, making the song in the key of G , BUT with the capo on 2nd fret that makes it the key of A just like John Denver. So it's the same thing either way. Which ever way is the most comfortable for you is the best. The sound will be essentially the same. It's Folk music, not classical, so you can change the key by moving the capo around to whichever fret suits your voice the best,
@AcryforhelpAaahhh "to whichever fret suits your voice the best". A lot of people you see on Youtube forget this point. I could never sing like John Denver so, I must try other variations to sound "acceptable".

I am currently working on the picking pattern, and having trouble with the rhythm. cord progression and timing can someone post a video with this pattern with tempo at a slow pace, then a normal pace? I have been googling JD and he goes too fast for me to catch up.

Hey brother, nice job. I have'nt gotten it completely down yet but What I picked up from this lesson was enough to bring my wife from the other side of the house with a big smile on her face. Us newbies really appreciate you guys putting up these kinds of tutorials. Take care. Dusty.
Let's see I think I had been playing about 4 years when I made this video. Like most people I think I played a lot at times, then not at all for other periods. You know how that goes.
Thanks so much it helped me a lot. I have a family reunion coming up, and I am supposed to play this song with my uncle while he plays banjo so...thanks again.
i just started a few months ago. this is great! so appreciative that people like you make the time to post these lessons. i like the alternate bass strumming. it will take me way longer than a week to get it down, but i'll get there. peace

Great lesson. I've looked up others on YouTube but like yours best. BUT, what are the chords you are playing? The strumming tips are very useful. And the tip on making the thumbpick (in the comments section) was appreciated too.

well done. i think you are a natural teacher. it also helps to see you enjoy yourself. not too sure about the key change for females. i know some that sing lower than the depths of hell
I'm somewhat of a novice at all this. What I do know how to play, I fingerpick. I notice the. . . thing you have on your thumb, is that sort of a fingerpicker's pick? I mean that because it's still the same motion that I use when I strum, but seems only usable for the downstroke. What is that thing, haha. Also, would you recommend learning to use a regular pick if one is prone to liking fingerpicking? Sorry for all the questions! I ask bc you are thorough and very helpful! Thx!
I wanted to play with my thumbnail but my nails grow very thin and don't work for the guitar. The pick I use is a regular picking thumb pick with a bit sawed off super-glued (after sandpapering) to a regular plastic pick about .50 mm in thickness. To make it fit my thumb I by placing it in hot water, then quickly wrapping it around my thumb. You're right it works easiest for the downstroke but with practice works fine for upstroke and even easier picking. Fingerpicking & strumming is best!
my mom named me after john denver (named me denver) and i play guitar so im surprising her for her birthday by playing it (not forgetting the preasent) and my mom will absololutly love it :) thanks
