  • Dead Can Dance, Rakim (Glossolalia in music) [video clip]

    « on: 10 Apr, 2008, 16:02:35 »

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    The Language is glossolalia

Glossolalia (from Greek glossa γλῶσσα "tongue, language" and λαλεῖν "to talk") is the vocalizing of fluent speech-like but unintelligible utterances, often as part of religious practice. Its use (including use in this article) sometimes also embraces Xenoglossy

  • extra

  • does anyone know what language their singing? sounds gothic?

  • @ranka35 I believe they're singing in Arabic, not sure which dialect as there's more than 50 of them. That's one of the things DCD does, sing in the original language. They've got songs in Greek and Olde English too. They probably have Gaelic and Pictish as well.

  • @ranka35 FUCK GOTHIC crap, and all those sissies darkies pieces of shit son

  • @EarthquakeMachine Don't worry, I'm sure you can find an LMFAO video somewhere on here. You don't need to have any taste, you don't need to think, you don't need to take an interest in anything. Don't worry.

  • @Spoonface370 Haha don´t get angry sissy darkie boy-girl-boy

  • What an incredibly haunting melody.

  • ok now ive heard Aramaic , Farsi, artifilcial language.... What language are they speaking for gosh sakes...?

  • @andiamoci22 According to Lisa, its all just gutteral and sounds.. they just basically make up the words to have a certain sound.

  • What a way to start a concert!!!!! This is more of an out of body experience than a concert! These guys are such a huge influence for me!

  • Does anyone know the beginning lyrics to this song. I have no idea what language it is in.

  • the production on this album is so amazing. new album and tour next year. can't wait

  • @darinjaddison You and me both!!!

  • i was actually lookin for rapper Rakim

But this sounds also very nice. Sounds like traditional Indian music.

  • Voila de la musique belle, faite avec du cœur et remplie d'âme !

  • buzlu olsun :)

  • Please tell me, this song originally comes in this live album? Thanks for the video. This song is like a personal revolution or something like that, but at the same time is so good to meditation and peace. It's like a truly growth "toward the within" :P, anybody know what "rakim" means?.

  • @qc1st I love six! lol

  • @KVCO

it's not glossolalia because the rephren it's repeating ;)

  • @KVCO Glossolalia (look it up) which is great because you can sing along without worrying about getting the words wrong!

  • Is that a santur she's playing?

  • @nodeterin a dulcimer, I guess

  • @nodeterin Me again... =) ... I look around In some forums and seems to be a Yangquin, the chinese version of the persian santur. The dulcimer is the europeand version.

  • @SrNutritivo I see, thanks a lot. :)

  • at 3:50 the sky opens

  • ancient humanity incarnate, live on!

  • that are The Real Artists. They make music for music, not for the show.

  • I love this. Jeff Martin sings it sometimes

  • I love this one the most of all their music and It's all good.

  • what is she playing and where can I get 1 - a Zither?

  • Is the "sound" of non-language voice instrumentation the same between unrelated New Age groups? Mmmmm. This could get interesting! Is there a published manual yet, on using the voice as an instrument when devoid of intelligable speech? Could this musical element be combined with, say, a nose harp or a stump fiddle, and synthesized, to create completely new musical variations? These are heavy questions, and the musical community needs the answers! And, do lah mor la ah la do cha de choo, too! :)

  • Can there be anything more beautiful??

  • 53 people are MORONS

  • @RipYourTongueOut i agree!!!!!!!!!!!!! absolutely beautiful!!!!!!!

  • @RipYourTongueOut it's 56 now, amd counting. LOL.

  • @RipYourTongueOut Nope. Now there are 56 MORONS!

  • @TheReligionkills As we say in Italy, the mother of the morons is always pregnant

  • @RipYourTongueOut

make that 57, the Moron-o-sphere is expanding to fit in more people who don't know true music

  • @RipYourTongueOut at least there are more people who understand this music.. the only thing that amazes me is how those nitwits miraculously find this song and deliberately vote "no-like"

  • i love his voice...its strong and powerful yet at the same time its very soothing and calming... i also love the interaction of both parts of the singers a very well combination

  • @mfrobles93

his voice makes me tingle and awakens something deep within me

  • This is as close to God as I can get here on Earth...

  • im pretty sure i was looking for the rapper.hahah

  • Divine,voice!

I' think, the dead stand up when listen this music.

  • Ja das waren noch Zeiten, einfach unübertroffen!!!!!!

  • When I saw them live back in the early 90s in an old movie theatre Lisa said the spirits are with us tonight, and they were.

  • @MultiKanut

    Hippy

  • wow...... cool

  • How the FUCK is this trash part of the Eric B. and Rakim set? REALLY?

I am not one to hate on songs like this, in fact in enjoy all kinds but this...although they may be VERY talented with their instruments, this is a very bad song.

  • Strong and sad...deep and melodious. One of the best from DCD.

  • I play this for my schizophrenic client.... it makes him at peace.

  • @sethmok Nine out of ten personalities agree: Dead Can Dance kicks ass.

  • @sethmok no doubt it works......

  • This song is fucking trippy , smoke a joint and listen to it and your in a new wave of something man

  • She's playing an Indian Santoor. He's speaking Farsi.

  • @Makski316 This is not Indian Santoor, it is the Chinese one (Yan Qing).

And the language is not Farsi, it is an artificial one created by Lisa Gerard.

  • Hammered dulcimer

  • Hammered dulcimer

  • from 4:17 and on this sounds like Thank You by Led Zep.

  • what the hell is this?

  • shes beautifull...

  • It's a hammered dulcimer, I think. I saw a smaller version played at Eau Claire Market in Calgary, Alberta.

  • what language is the man speaking ??

  • @homsar678: He's speaking in Hammered Dulcimer.

  • You can tell that when she starts singing, she is in the zone....

  • @autumnquake what do you mean the zone?

  • @TheLastAntarean The Zone is where You go when the Music plays the Band... Grateful Dead used to go there often...

  • Check out Indukti on my channel!

  • I needed this. Thank you.

  • Just listen to any other group that tries to do a cover of this and you learn how awesome DCD and this effort is. Pulled off live in one take is truly amazing!!!

  • i love them so much i can listen to this song nonstop allday

  • 1:40, is Brendan chewing gum???

  • goose bumps!!!! every time!!!!

  • @4c1dh34d yes yes yes....!!

  • very strong melody

  • Is sounds a lot like Indian and North African music.

  • :: i saw 'em in '96 during their "Spiritchaser" tour . . . unfookingreal. Thank you, BrinkOfEmptiness, for uploading this gem. Their music is truly one-of-a-kind. Namasté ~ (•8-D

  • Lisa is playing a Yang Ch'in,a Chinese version of a dulcimer. It has 4 bridges and is tuned differently making it harder to play (Thank you Dizzi Dulcimer ;-))

  • its a santoor

  • Watch the movie "Baraka," DCD does the soundtrack. Awesome.

  • I was there at that performance sad the place shut down but DCD was awesome!!

  • Their best music!

  • The instrument is called a Hammered Dulcimer. I am getting one soon. I want to try and make electronic music with effects with it.

  • Wow...You can't deny the absolute beauty of this song!!

    DCD 4EVER!!!!!

  • LOL I dunno why but this song reminds me of ancient Greece or Roman times

  • I saw them live this Saturday!! It was certainly an epic performance, I had shivers runnig down my spine the whole time.

  • @StrawbarieGashes please dont tell me they were playing in dublin and i missed it or i will cry!!

  • StrawbarieGashes@clipside2 , no no, They played in Vilnius Lithuania :)

  • @StrawbarieGashes Errrr, what? Dead Can Dance haven't played live since 2005...?

  • @ruinedbyidiots They did put on a show in Vilnius on March 3rd. They're intoducing their new album that is supose to come out in June.

  • @StrawbarieGashes I think you're getting things a bit mixed up... I just Googled "dead can dance vilnius" and it turns out Brendan Perry, not Dead Can Dance, played in Vilnius... and that was on April 3, not March 3.

Again, as I said, Dead Can Dance haven't played a concert since 2005, and they're not releasing a new album. Brendan Perry is touring this year, not Dead Can Dance.

  • her voice sounds like many voices at once >.> so cool! remarkable...moves the soul

  • After all these years it still makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck. Great song

  • i guess the instrument Lisa playing on is a chinese yanquin; fantastic performance

  • I thought it was a Hammered Dulcimer, but I could be wrong.

  • nah dude your right, a dulcimer.

  • actually that instrument is a persian dulcimer which is originally called santoor

  • or it is a hungarian cimbalom. :)

  • Great song, great group! I did't know them well enough before. Here in Moscow we appreciate real music too.

  • so much freaking talent on one stage at the same time...

  • me parece una exelente banda
