Not exactly. She's right about the general population of Phnom Penh during that time. The 2 million figure you mention was only true at the tail end of the civil war (late 1974-early 1975), when the population swelled with refugees prior to the victory of the Khmer Rouge.
I really enjoy your video footage which make me feel closer to my homeland. I really admire your Khmer skill, he can speak Khmer better than me which is sad to say. To see someone other than your own people speak Khmer, which making me feel that the world is so small. But yet we are half the globe away. Thanks for sharing.
I'm glad that this focused mainly on the wonderful era Cambodia experienced after her independence up until the civil war which seems to have been nearly forgotten and eclipsed by the genocide.
I may not have been born during that era but growing up listening to music from that era I feel strongly attached.
How she described her life in Phnom Penh prior to the Khmer Rouge is very interesting.
check out SEASSI, in Wisconsin, where I teach in the summer...too late for this year to get a fellowship, but maybe next year? do a Google search for SEASSI and Khmer and then follow the first link...
Of course, Phnom Penh now is diffrent than 33 years ago. Gosh, I've been in US 11 years and I can't hardly recognize it there. Thanks pou Frank and the team for the time.
makes me want to be around my khmer friends again, where i felt so safe and really loved. i lost two friends to aids in the last few years. RIP Serey Soun and Vannak Hoy, I love you guys....and miss you terribly.....
Man, you have a really good Khmer accent too.
If I closed my eyes, I wouldn't be able to hear the difference.

I was wondering, can the guy narrating the video also speak Cantonese?
megamunchit2008 2 years ago
haha...nope. I did study Cantonese for a few months about 17 years ago, but I can't speak it today. I'd like to learn someday, though.
preahko 2 years ago
Oh, ok. I just thought you were an actor in one of the Hong Kong movie. You look and sound almost like him.
megamunchit2008 2 years ago
I'm also curious as to how come you decided to learn Khmer? Not much demand for Khmer anything.
