  • fire those damn teachers. NO teachers, however good, should get a permanent contract. That's just silly... That leaves tons of room for the bad teachers to keep doing bad, without any repercussion. But i do agree, alot of this isn't the teachers fault. A lot of the blame rests with the governments horrible education laws.

  • Teachers unions needs to stay the hell out of education, too. Their best interest is for the TEACHERS, not the students. They've shown that time and time again.

  • CNN is just listing the top salary that a teacher who has been at the school the longest makes. S/he is probably a year or two away from retirement age. The real reason our govt. wants to be able to fire teachers is so they can cut out the teachers they have to pay the most who are the veteran teachers, then they can hire rookie teachers for less money and fire them when they make more with seniority in the future by claiming they are horrible teachers too. They're doing this in CA now.

  • Keep pressing 6 to see the guy getting a bj and loving it

keep pressing 8 to hear the human pig :p laugh, thumbs up, come listen to my music :)

  • of course students aint performing well in math, look at how easy their freakin math is in highschool, and you only need 3years of math, 1hr each day too. wtf

  • no need to change poverty in order the improve children's performance??? sure? getting rid of teachers and education is crime organized by government/corporation in order to keep population stupid and enslaved. this way, not being specialized labor, people will take any kind of job, for any kind of money, with any kind of benefit ( or no benefits at all)... sad. corporations have more political power than ever in this country... sad. America is bellow ground zero, we've been buried alive.

  • How in the world can Mr. Perry by an "educational correspondent"? The guy is a HIT MAN FOR THE PRIVATIZATION CORPORATIONS AND THEIR LOBBYISTS.

    Bad job by CNN!

  • Teachers are not soley accountable. There are many factors that go into why a student is not achieving success. For example.... teachers, home life, parents, poverty, inability of the student to learn, special needs, biological problems, media and etc.

Its hard for teachers to work with students if their are problems in the life's of the students. Its not impossible but hard, even for the most committed and educated teacher.

  • I've been a public school teacher for over 20 years in Florida and make a heck of a lot less than these Rhode Island teachers. Cost of living in Florida is no longer inexpensive down here! A huge problem I see is the curriculum. I still believe that there is a lot of "dumbing down" in the system. It is not the teachers! In addition, parents do not help like in earlier generations. My mom did not speak English, spoke German, (only a HS grad). However, she managed to help me with school work!

  • No way. Those teachers are paid more than most educators in this nation. It would be difficult, but the faculty should come together to discuss better education techniques instead of demanding high pay from an economically and socially disadvantaged community. That's more selfish than anything. Those teachers have been compensated enough, and any more compensation would be a disservice to the student of that school district. Those kids need to be loved.

  • @Mesfunification Now it's not compensation,it's about all the teachers are fired, higher paid or lower paid. The truth is teachers haven't go raise in the past a few years, If they blame teachers for the deficit, then it's a solution for cutting everyone's pay. Of course, they can fire all and get all new low-paid teachers, they can do that disregard teachers voices. Then, the whole nation is going to fire all the teachers.

  • FUCK UNION!

  • i have been a union member. but i am fed up with the teacher's union.

she is all blather blather blather.

they are just as selfcentered and greedy as the firefighters union and the police union (at least here in boston.)

  • i have been a union member. but i am fed up with the teacher's union. they are just as selfcentered and greedy as the firefighters union and the police union (at least here in boston.)

  • i have been a union member. but i am fed up with the teacher's union.

  • damn i'd be pissed...they get paid

  • That woman looks like she is opening a package that might have a bomb in it.

  • Blame the teachers rather than the students and the parents. Sounds great. We don't need to hold the students responsible for their own conduct. As for the extra time, teachers already put in much, much more than their 40 hours per week. They just keep asking for more and more from us, but place no accountability elsewhere.

  • @mccormickjm

Teachers are way overcompensated for their easy workweek!

LOL oh no more than 40 hours? Sounds like a vacation to a CPA.....

  • ac should seriously drown in a fire, he picks a strong speaker from the side he likes a weak from the side he doesnt and helps make them look bad not just here i used to watch his hsow for like 2 years

  • How the hell can you demand anyone stay longer at their job and not compensate them. Administration should have provided more training and worked with the staff instead of acting like Nazis about it. What are they going to do? Fire the staff every month if they don't do the job? This was a ridiculous 'solution.' to a problem.

  • every teacher in school right now is terrible. i say fire all of them and hire a computer program to teach every subject.

  • rap music is to blame

  • @henryc98 that's not the ONLY reason, but it can definitely been seen as a contributing factor

  • They make 72k a year and cant volunteer an extra 30 minutes after school? They make 72k a year and complain they are not supplied with what they need for class?Take your asses to Walmart and buy it.Making 72k a year and every kid is failing.Just a manager in baseball, if you have losing seasons your gonna get canned.

  • @mattlocke06

Yep 72k a year is way overcompensation. That is why the field is oversaturated!

I love how they get the salary with a sweet workweek. All corporate jobs on salary work until the work is done not until the union contract says.

  • good , fire them. making 72k and not getting the job done. Why shouldnt they be fired.. Fuck them. Everyone else is fired if you dont get the job done

  • unions are destroying the country

  • @khami231234

LMAO @ this lady thinking poor people can't learn!

  • Looks like a classic witch-hunt. Everyone's looking for someone to behead.

In poor communities such as this one. There are 2 main challenges:

    1. Kids are academically behind--since elementary school.

    2. Classrooms are hard to manage.

This is a deadly concoction and can only be solved by:

    1. smaller class size.

    2. Extra HOURS spent by a teacher with the students (whether the teachers are paid for their overtime or not) in the form of "mandatory" office hours.

    Bottomline:sacrifice

  • That will not work. You're an idiot.

  • 56 of the CF teachers are on top step in a salary scale that is median in RI. 72000 is MEDIAN for TOP STEP

10 of the 56 grew up in that poor city.

Supt. is facing loss of funding from the state so this was a way for her to cut her budget.

  • Steve Perry seems to be anti teachers union. I bet his charters dont have unions or rights. How many does he fire to keep his budget low and put money in his pocket. SAY NO to for profit Charters!

  • Teachers never rejected the plan. Dr. Gallo walked away. CF's salary is median in RI . Scores went up!! Why fire them now?

The state took over CFin 91 if its failing then that belongs to the state not the teachers who do what they are told.

  • Anderson, get your ass to Chile

  • You're not talking to me, are you?

  • yes, he is

  • That's really strange. He's the one that brought up that sick stuff. He must be mental.

  • No wonder you were a teacher for only 4 weeks.

  • @morph995

who cares.... stop reposting spam :)

  • yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!! they deserve it

  • The teachers did not ask for more money. ONCE AGAIN THEY DID NOT BRING THAT UP. It is a rumor. As a recent graduate of 2009, I say that most of your statistics are falsely advertised. We had 175 seniors last year and 165 graduated now why would you try to compare our school to any big SCHOOL.

  • Too often teacher's are used as scapegoats for the failure of children in school and are given too much credit when they succeed. The parents and the students are just as responsible for their academic success as the teachers.

  • I do not see why anyone would agree with firing all of the teachers. What they need to do is help the teachers get things back on track. In another thing I heard, over half the students speak english as a 2nd lang which makes it even harder for the teachers to educate these students. Tests are given in english not spanish and that could be why scores are low. Not because all of the teachers are horrible. Every school has some bad apple teachers but cleaning house is just ridiculous & unnecessary

  • $72,000-$78,000 is excessive but its Rhode Island most New England high school teachers make more money.

  • lol i live in nj the teachers payment is 30,000 they have 72,000 wtf? and in my school teachers are very good why they get less money???

  • This principle did the right thing. These teachers got EXACTLY what they deserved. This is a perfect example of what's wrong with the school systems in the US.

I was an adjunct professor for many years and I know that some of the best students in these districts are radically unprepared and ready for college.

These kids aren't even ready to work at McDonad's and the teachers are making way, way, way too much money. Period.

  • $72,000-$78,000 salary?!

I'm sure there are many teachers who would snatch up that offer in a second!

  • You don't need a fancy school and computers to teach children. That's a big myth. I had facilities that would make schools in the ghetto look like Harvard. The productivity and motivation of the children will far exceed any American school, because teachers were allowed to discipline children and we were encouraged to value it.

America's a joke. Unions are not the problem. Parents, students and politicians are. FIRE THEM FIRST!

  • Excuse me sir or miss (it's youtube I never know.) more to the point my mother and Granny pushed me into doing what needs to be done not the teacher or politians I had to take the TAKS TEST 3 times but I kept working and graduated its all about what the student wants plain and simple.

    Do you not agree?

  • It is said that there is poverty in these schools? That is a load of garbage. Overseas, education is viewed as a way to get out of poverty. The problem lies with America's belief that education is a right. Given the horrible way children are behaving in school, it really should be a privilege instead. Teachers are NOT the problem!

    Politicians are!

  • In my experience, the administrators and the politicians are the real problem. The politicians pass all sorts of garbage laws that protect the troublemakers and criminals that should be in jail, not school, and the administrators pay themselves nice salaries and waste money on studies and projects that help their friends!

Most teachers I know are very decent, hardworking people. They are not ignorant auto workers! Fire the administrators!

  • Bold move. Applaud them for having the courage to do the right thing. It's about time. This is the beginning and I hope more will follow. Holding accountability for those who are getting paid and get rid of the Union. Bottom line performance does count!

  • Here's my problem: If you start firing all teachers in a school, then who's gonna want to replace them? Where is the job security? You're gonna have to scrape the bottom of the barrel to re-staff. There will also be a huge incentive(their livelihood) for teachers to pass students who cheated or even help them help them pass by "whatever means necessary." This gives a poor illustration of how firing all teachers fits into a re-structuring plan. Maybe it could solve the problem, but how?

  • Teachers can only do so much. Why doesn't the government spend money upgrading this school?

This school and the kids need a complete fresh start. If the teachers go, a whole new staff should come in, along with a financial upgrade for the school.

  • this is bullshit!!!! ..what about the schools in the inner city poor poor areas this has happend for years and nothing like this ever came up (blacks)
