Jeff is WAY too hard on himself here. He may not know 100% what he's doing in terms of theory, but there's a lot more going on in his solos and riffs then a lot of thrash guitarists. He has the technique and the feel and I think he is too hard on himself by thinking he's an inept lead player because he can be quite clever sometimes.
My recommendations is to listen to Jeff, it's right it may be technically correct but some of the things I hear that people say are "technical" sound like shit to me too. Great advice is to just keep taking both classical and jazz lessons, and feel free to get out of the technical barriers if you feel your sound can have greater potential at other fret and string positions.
Damn he's really straight forward, he actually plays with what he is feeling/hearing which is what music really is. BEST THING FOR YOUNG GUITARIST TO HEAR!
He thinks exactly the way I do, likes the same things I do and plays the same things I do. He's my dream teacher. Guess I'm off to learn some more Annihilator songs now.
Hey...i know to read but i never went to school, i know play football but my mother never give me a ball.... I KNOW TO PLAY GUITAR BUT IT WAS ALL BY EARING AND A LOT OF STREET TEACH.
He's just really abnormally talented guy, that's why he doesn't need to learn stuff and it appears to be unnecessary for him. It all obviously happens by itself in his head what then becomes a part of a song. Talent is something that doesn't need to be explained. Either a person has it or not. Sad for me, but true.
Hell yeah with the mention of Broderick and Loomis. And this man is such an underrated metal player! Truly great words of wisdom when talking technique!!
@rafnaj1 They are, but they are meant to be. Slayer solo's have a that dirty in-your-face feel. So he's not wrong, since the muddy solo's were written that way for just that reason: In this case, it's not about Musical Theory, it's about feeling and hearing.
I can't read sheet music. I can read tabs, but i get sonfused sometimes(some songs are just hard to learn espically with numbers going everwhere!) I like Jeff more than any othe schooled player,. Yeah they're good, but they're like college kids; think they're all that, and think it is supposed to be that wat. Like Jeff said, many of us are street players. See, what makes a good musician is his feel. Some schooled guitarists have feel, and some don't.
@weirdalyankosin Oddly, I'm inclined to agree, but not everyone can read it. I've met people who can read standard musical notation like they were reading a newspaper, but simply can't wrap their mind around Tabulature. I know that Jeff had someone else Tab all of his songs for him on their official website. The tabs are gone now (glad I remembered to archive them), but they were not put together by the man himself. Nor did any of the tabs have any solo material.
Theory taught me harmonies and scales. Then when I got better I broke out of the sticking to keys and scales and just played with the things I knew sounded good in combination. And because I had already learned harmonies I knew which ones would sound good.
He knows from experience that it takes a lot of dedication and COMMITMENT (to a lot of people thats a scarry concept) But nothing worth anything comes easy.
simple stuff my ass jeff...im 8month experienced and im still finding alison hell hard to play...but i can play operation annihilation and king of the kill for some reason... just that intro for alison hell is hard to get it CLEAR...
have I just seen Jeff Waters - my guitar god - talking about Chris Broderick - the ultimate and flawless player from Megadeth? this is to good to believe in
He reminds me of Matthew Fox

@weirdalyankosin He really can't read any musical notation. But then that kinda makes him even better! All Feel and less theory.

@Osyran but... tab... it is impossible to not be able to read tab... literally... unless you have a mental disability to read, you CAN read tab!
