John Cage wasn't able to separate his ego from silence, otherwise he wouldn't have composed 4'33'' instead he would have been a monk or philosopher and just listened.
Eastern thought and philosophy hashed this out thousands of years ago, in that sound, or any sensory input can be made or manipulated into a sort of drug or abused substance for the mind to use simply to reassure itself that it exists. Sound that is warped by ego to fit that egos or collective egos ideals is no more real than any other thought, it does not exist outside the mind. Whereas sound that has nothing to do with human thought at all, is a true product and representative of reality .
Quite an educated and genius statement, would you happen to have any college under your belt? if so where did you study? Im truly impressed by your comment.
The only intelligence a society sees is that which it defines, and it defines intelligence as the set of specific information and skills which are useful to it.. This is "conventional" intelligence. REAL intelligence is not dependent on or even usually part of the phenomena of human society, but man can be part of it if he can free himself from societies and their conventions. That you automatically associate "college" with "educated and genius" says that you are not a free man.
he was correct about traditional music being people's talk, usually about themselves, etc, and that the sound of traffic is in that sense non-musical. interesting that he accepted a categorical distinction between music and "sound", had no problem with "sound" being its own category, not needing (or wanting) the protective label of "music". more interesting that he preferred meaningless sound to people talking. tells of misanthropy.
Anyone who slags off John Cage can piss off! Hes a true genius, otherwise we wouldnt be debating this! He might have wacky ideas, but so did Beethoven for his time, and no one laughs at Beethoven do they? People actually need to start LISTENING to cage, because the results are more than always incredible if taken into consideration properly! Long live Cage!
Where do you stand in the great bullshit debate? What are your views about bullshit? Is it a significant social force? Is it an important element of modern society? Has bullshit developed in recent years? Is the quality of bullshit as high as in the 1990s? Or do you not have views? Do you need advice from a bullshit guidance expert?
Should bullshit become a way of life? Should the future of bullshit be regulated by government legislation, or by qualified independent consultants?
I do like a lot of his 'music' music, and I find him interesting, or else I wouldn't have watched this video
