There was also an interesting theory that Jason was actually an accomplice with his mother in the first film, although it's unlikely since the girl from the first one beheaded his mother and got away with it until the second movie. All we know for certain is that Jason was killed in the 4th movie by Tommy Jarvis and is then brought back to life in the 6th movie when he's struck by lightning. That gives Jason his super human strength which he maintains even after his descent into hell.

In the original continuity, Jason's exact motives and the reasoning behind his resurrection is never formally explained (at least not to my knowledge) and some prefer it that way. It makes him more mysterious. No one knows if he really drowned and then came back after his mother's death or if he was alive the whole time living in the woods. Some say he witnessed his mother's death. Either way, it's known that his killing spree did not begin until after his mother was killed.

@Minecraftis4pros apparently he was a deformed kid who was pushed into a lake by bullies and drowned. the camp counsolors who were suppose to be taking care of the kids, were suppose to keep closer eye on Jason because he had severe learning difficulties and couldn't swim. but they were too busy having sex. his mother got angry and killed the camp counsolors. the camp was closed down, and re-opened few years later and his mother came back to kill more people. but one of them cuts her head off.

His mother worked at the camp and he was out swimming but the counselors werent paying attention because they were lvoe making so he drifted out into the middle of crystal lake and drown. His mother resurrected jason using the necronomon but the curse is that anyone brought back using the necronomon is evil so when jason came back he only killed when his mother ordered him to, when she died he just killed anyone who entered crystal lake.
