I've never understood complaints about this scene. The narrative intentions are pretty clear and well explained in the story. It establishes from the start that the new Doctor is unstable and wildly different from the last guy. It gives Colin a chance to chew the scenery, which he's good at. The only problem I can see is that it raises the legitimate question if Peri - already a bit of a weakling - is safe travelling with the Doctor. But they could fix that by making Peri stronger, anyway.
@swordseye2 This is the beginning of "The Twin Dilemma", I believe. The Doctor's regeneration was unstable and caused him to have a violent episode. The idea was to have Six start out unstable (due to poisoning, I think), but mellow out as the seasons progressed. Unfortunately, the BBC fired Colin Baker before Six had a chance to stabilize much, so he never got the chance to show us the awesome on TV. Baker does a great job in the Big Finish audios, though.
@swordseye2 I think Colin was ace as Bayban in B7, in billions of ways and Colin should in my view been cast as Roj Blake in Blake's Seven instead of Gareth Thomas who had no staying power and Gareth pushed off and let down millions of fans and how silly was he.Colin if he had played Blake, would never have done that an dBlake would have been in series three and B7 might have run much longer than it did.
God, I can't decide if this scene is terrifyingly out-of-character bad or insanely daring good. Whatever the answer is, you really do have to admire Colin. Talk about doing a lot with nothing!
@jjkaraokepro An interesting catch, as the question mark does not become a Whovian staple until his successor gains a one (re)generation attachment to it. I wouldn't even have thought twice on it had you not mentioned it.
@akashashen They started sticking the question marks on the Doctors lapels towards the end of Tom Bakers run. It is actually the exact poin which signifies the decline of the series and the change in creative direction. Soon after K-9 gets thrown in a lake, torn apart, made powerless, and Romana is suddenly written as an airhead.
@1andrewman1 Thanks! ^^ Just saw it. Well, the beginning anyway ....lost intrest in the middle of it for some reason. Strange, I usually don't ever do that during a Dr. Who ep.
@1andrewman1 I heard Some bad writers got in or something in that eraand there were some conflicts b/c of it. Still, in my own opinion, I think Colin did a good job. All the parts with him acting were pretty entertaining...it's the other parts that kinda bored me. XD
Best part ever. She killed my Doctor. Good for you 6th Doc! 5th Doc was sexy and handsome in the cricketing outfit...and had to end up in the bright outfit....all because of Peri's foolishness. Do like the part in Twin Dilemma when Doc 6 says trademark Doc 5's saying, Brave heart Tegan. Tegan obviously left a nice impact on the Doctor. :)
@k1ng401 What? He is far more Doctorish (he's a lot like the 1st) than most of the others. The nu-ones shouldn't even be acknowledged - that's how bad they were.
@finmagik no not really. More that he was a fat, obnoxious, prick. Mind you I think the last two doctors are too boyish and full of themselves. But that is more tolerable than Colin Baker. Tom was the best, followed by Jon and Peter. I never saw Patrick and in the DVDs I'm seen of William Hartnell his character, though somewhat snappy and irratible, is pretty uninteresting.
@k1ng401 And that my friend is why you are NOT a a real whoivan. All three things you listed as demerits as draws for me when it comes to Six. If you can't LOVE the Doctor for all his facets then you are no more a fan then you are a wombat.
@finmagik well you got me there, I'm definitely not a Whovian! And as I said, I'm not a fan anymore either. Though I was, a card carrying member of the ADWFC and a subscriber to Zerinza, JNT and his lunchtime decision to hire this numbnut changed all that. But then I also turned 16 around the same tim so maybe I just grew up.
@jayzner97 I think Colin Baker should have played Blake,in Blake's Seven he would have been billions of times better playing Blake in B7 than playing doctor who.
I liked The Sixth Doctor. It's these much darker scenes that they didn't have in episodes for the Fourth, or the Third (both of whom are brilliant as well). It really showed that The Doctor wasn't just a happy bumbling man travelling across the universe.
@instalation9 I think Colin was ace in Blake's Seven as Bayban in the episode City at the Edge of the World .Colin should have been in my view cast, as Blake in B7 instead of Gareth Thomas who childishly left the series after two seasons silly man Colin Baker would never have left B7 if he had played Blake.
Ah, the episode that nearly ended Doctor Who for my family... great choice.
My eldest brother saw this, and didn't watch another episode of Doctor Who for about a decade... which in turn meant I missed great chunks of the show...
@TheAndyinSeattle No, Colin's a great actor that got dealt a really crappy hand. He didn't get a say in the costume design, and it was the writer's decision to turn Six into a total prick. Listen to the audio adventures that Baker did. They are much better. The plan was to have Six become a more likable character over time, but because of the bad writing that annoyed fans and the lack of support from the BBC Controller, it never came to pass.
....oh how I wished he travelled to strangle the child Amy....now that would have been the best....Colin Baker is really the best Dr ever....BBC messed that era up of course....they all of a sudden felt the need to put money into daytime programming.....BBC is destroying the Dr the same way with Matt with this terrible story now, making the Dr now Amy's companion....Peri was one of the best companions and certainly the hottest ever!....
Ok, maybe I was a little harsh calling Colin a prick. I do have a disliking to him, especially this scene. I haven't heard the Big Finish audios, but I will once I get a chance.
@salag13 maybe 6 is a bit nuts, doesnt has the best mood, is violent sometimes and use that menace against fashion coat, and is somehow out of the model; yeah, pretty nothing in favour; but its because all those bad aspects that I like him, all that make him more believable; I can accept the way he acts and reacts, or just the way he is, because of the danger he has to confront and the situations he has to go through. and ...
@salag13 Yes, he can be a bad temper jerk, but he cares for Peri, and having his usual bad mood and arrogance when he is worried, down, or shows affection for someone it shows a lot; take an example when he learns about Peris death you can see the floor cracking down his feets. Also,he reminds me of Hartnell Doctor, he had his temper didnt he? And he was a great Doctor!. I mean, why the heck he has to be nice?.- I cant think of a better reason right now. And I know how long this already is.
After Peter's super-nice-Doctor handing out chocolate buttons to children and nursing sick puppies back to health, we needed Colin's-Psychotic-bastard-doctor to come and snatch a few handbags and break a few noses. I actually find Colin more memorable than Peter for this reason :-)
@v11cu96 I think its a good gambit to pick a doctor who isn't much like the last guy. Also the way e treated Martha that was pretty bad he spent the entire season comparing her to Rose, and Donna's mindwipe? @finmagik he tried to punish them as he saw fit not kill everything. and the 9th acted way worse. they all did. the 10th was probly one of the few who always tried to give second chances be nice and always felt guilty. and the 9th, he would always call ppl dumb apes and be all rude and resort to killing same with most other doctors. in all honesty the 10th was the kindest most considerate doctor (plus absolutely my favorite and utterly adorable cough cough*)
