Watch closely after the last note fades out -- the look on his face as he gives the band/singers the "A-OK" signal. He knew they had just killed it, and he wanted them to know he knew it. I LOVE that.
Somebody get ahold of Doc Brown or Marty Mcfly! The sentiment is wonderful but sadly 'This Night' did not last forever. Watching this takes me back though, to greater days with REAL raw talent, REAL singing, REAL songs! Just superb, thanks so much for posting, am watching all of these, all over again & again! I just need to be back there on 'This Night'! 88mph??
Brilliant and great harmonies too. I'm watching this (and the others) over and over. Still can't find anyone with the dvd tho unfortunately ... yet. ;)
@alextreme400 Thank you kindly for the info. Yes, I've seen it listed on Amazon but sadly (forgive me if it's you who are selling it?) the reviews don't bode well. I don't expect DVD quality video or Dolby surround sound but no good buying something of 3rd or 4th generation either with all due respect to the seller whoever they are. I have this on video somewhere. Maybe I ought to dig it out and see what the quality of the tape is like after all these years. Maybe I'll get lucky. :)
Don't suppose anyone in the UK has a copy of this on DVD perchance? I used to have the whole concert on VHS but sadly it's deteriorated over the years and would love to watch the whole thing again. If so please message me. :)
i didn't know the song was for elle Macpherson. Didn't she make the cover of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue 4 times, more times than anyone else? She can make men do whatever she wants :).
@hollpollFunny you should find this on an old video - I kept this on video for 23 years, even several years without having a video recorder. Tragically when I moved in with my now wife she accidently chucked it out!! Still devastated and have looked all over for a copy since. Not even a big Billy fan but this particular concert just captured him and his band at a the peak moment and in inspiring form.
Wow, doesn't this song bring up lots of emotions for us all... and memories! I remember hearing my Ma play this record when I was a kid. But now that I'm older and been through a lil bit of life, it takes on a whole new meaning...
As an aspiring musician this song is a favorite of mine as I was in high school when the Innocent Man album ws released. As I grow as amusician I plan on doing a version of this great song myself one day soon. Thank you for posting it.
I was about 17 when this was released - the summer before I graduated high school. I fell in love with Billy while in junior high. This was always one of my favs. To this day, I see him and I still want him - I wanted him to take me to the prom and dance '50's style with this album playing in the background... guess "Its Just A Fantasy!" : )
was there that night still got the video of this concert as well,,,christ was it 26 years ago?????????? that night really was my night,,its never been equalled thanks billy
My fiancee and I first heard this song in concert at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto on Dec 11 1986. It was the last song of the show and we both immediately said this was to be our wedding song. It was beautiful and we both still love it 22 years later!!
Billy was thinking in the mode of the 60's song "Lover's Concerto", which is based on a Bach Minuet. Since someone already copped a Bach melody, Billy figured he'd cop a Beethoven melody (and a very beautiful one at that!) The whole "Innocent Man" album is based on his favorite Motown and Stax albums from the 1960's.
Watch closely after the last note fades out -- the look on his face as he gives the band/singers the "A-OK" signal. He knew they had just killed it, and he wanted them to know he knew it. I LOVE that.

Yes, and he credits "L.V. Beethoven" as one of the song's writers on the album.

The chorus (This Night ...) is the main theme of Beethoven's Pathetique Sonata, 2nd Movement.
Both beautiful.
I think Ludwig Van Beethoven would be happy with Billy's adaptation - I am.
