  • Watch closely after the last note fades out -- the look on his face as he gives the band/singers the "A-OK" signal. He knew they had just killed it, and he wanted them to know he knew it. I LOVE that.

  • he looks like such a boss in this video. GO BILLY!!!!!!!

  • My parents have got this whole concert on recored VHS - Awesome...

  • ビリー無しでは生きていけない

  • this is my favourite song in the whole world. Wedding song <3

  • 素敵だ!悲愴のアレンジが素晴らしい

  • Billy Joel 最高ですね

    もう日本には来ないみたいなんで

  • Remember seeing this broadcast on BBC 1 , was a really great concert.

  • wow, yes, indeed this is the best version on youtube. Listen so rich voice and energy!

  • This song was based on the second movement of Pathetique by Beethoven

  • Somebody get ahold of Doc Brown or Marty Mcfly! The sentiment is wonderful but sadly 'This Night' did not last forever. Watching this takes me back though, to greater days with REAL raw talent, REAL singing, REAL songs! Just superb, thanks so much for posting, am watching all of these, all over again & again! I just need to be back there on 'This Night'! 88mph??

  • 100 per cent spot fuckin on

  • i was born 83, but this has to be in my top 3 of all time songs. legend!

  • @petewayre heck dude, I was born in '92, and this is one my of my faves for sure. billy joel is the man, for sure!

  • top notch

  • Brilliant and great harmonies too. I'm watching this (and the others) over and over. Still can't find anyone with the dvd tho unfortunately ... yet. ;)

  • @Mancunian6 you can look for it on amazon or ebay...it's called the Long road home !

  • @alextreme400 Thank you kindly for the info. Yes, I've seen it listed on Amazon but sadly (forgive me if it's you who are selling it?) the reviews don't bode well. I don't expect DVD quality video or Dolby surround sound but no good buying something of 3rd or 4th generation either with all due respect to the seller whoever they are. I have this on video somewhere. Maybe I ought to dig it out and see what the quality of the tape is like after all these years. Maybe I'll get lucky. :)

  • @Mancunian6 yeah i know, the quality of the video is very poor...billy should release this as an official DVD :)

  • 最高! The best of his, the great performance. Thank you for posting.

  • Not only is this the best live performance of This Night, it's the best Billy Joel song ever. Thanks very much for posting.

  • Don't suppose anyone in the UK has a copy of this on DVD perchance? I used to have the whole concert on VHS but sadly it's deteriorated over the years and would love to watch the whole thing again. If so please message me. :)

  • @Mancunian6 Ditto

  • Thanks for posting. This is my favorite song of all time!!

  • i didn't know the song was for elle Macpherson. Didn't she make the cover of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue 4 times, more times than anyone else? She can make men do whatever she wants :).

  • fuckin spot on! had this concert on betamax. used to watch it after pub in 84 aged 20! happy, happy days

  • @ainsliebrockett Nice one mate, so did I. I remember it being on telly in two parts, brilliant!

  • He wrote this song for Elle MacPherson, who he dated just before Christie Brinkley. Great fucking song.

  • ほんと、泣ける!

  • Makes me wanna dance, that's one sexy song..

  • I think you meant to say

    BILLY JOEL "THIS NIGHT" LONDON

    FRIDAY 8th JUNE 1984

people tend to believe what they read so best to get it right. Thanks for posting btw

  • @hollpollFunny you should find this on an old video - I kept this on video for 23 years, even several years without having a video recorder. Tragically when I moved in with my now wife she accidently chucked it out!! Still devastated and have looked all over for a copy since. Not even a big Billy fan but this particular concert just captured him and his band at a the peak moment and in inspiring form.

  • The vocal end of the song shows how great Billy was, not only as a piano player, but as a singer. The ending just blows me away!

  • This was my wedding song, there will never be anyone as cool as Billy Joel

  • @MrPattermike2 i wanted it as mine - my mum didnt think the words were appropriate... she didnt like my 2nd choice of 'moving out' eitha... lol

  • @megzos LOL...That's funny :)

  • Holy crappuccino!! The chorus is the second movement of Beethoven's Grand Pathétique!!

  • Yes, and he credits "L.V. Beethoven" as one of the song's writers on the album.

  • I love this song, it was the story of my life when I first met the man who became my husband. :)

  • And yes, the chorus is borrowed from Beethoven!!

  • Billy Joel always gave credit to his backing singers for their great harmonies.

  • "I believe this is the best live version"

    I agree!

  • Love the harmonies in this one!

  • Wow, doesn't this song bring up lots of emotions for us all... and memories! I remember hearing my Ma play this record when I was a kid. But now that I'm older and been through a lil bit of life, it takes on a whole new meaning...

  • I watched it on telly, my sister made a video copy. She has since died, this brings back great memories. Is it available on DVD?

  • I was at this show what a night

  • As an aspiring musician this song is a favorite of mine as I was in high school when the Innocent Man album ws released. As I grow as amusician I plan on doing a version of this great song myself one day soon. Thank you for posting it.

  • This was my parents Wedding song. i absolutely love this song!!!!

  • My favourite song of all time. I was at the concert at Wembley too. Best concert ever. :)

  • Comment removed

  • i dont believe anyone would even know that the chorus is borrowed from Beethoven if it hadnt said so on the album.

  • That´s true.

It´s the sonata pathetique in Es Dur

  • i knew. both songs are beautiful!

  • damn you sound like a cool chick! into Billy Joel, Classical, and 666!!

  • I was about 17 when this was released - the summer before I graduated high school. I fell in love with Billy while in junior high. This was always one of my favs. To this day, I see him and I still want him - I wanted him to take me to the prom and dance '50's style with this album playing in the background... guess "Its Just A Fantasy!" : )

  • OMG! How cute can someone be :D Awesome vid, thanks for sharing!

  • Poor Beethoven is rolling over in his grave.

  • I would be interested in hearing more songs from this concert. I really like Billy Joel!

  • Przepiękna, kapitalnie śpiewana, morze uczuć..

  • was there that night still got the video of this concert as well,,,christ was it 26 years ago?????????? that night really was my night,,its never been equalled thanks billy

  • What a beautiful song!!!

  • Lol he absolutely ripped Beethoven.

  • one of the most underated songs ever.

  • Wow, what an unbelievable performance.

  • Good choon. That was a classic concert. Remember watching it on Betamax many times.

  • I love the 'Innocent Man' album - has to be my fave BJ one. And this is probably my all time fave song.

  • This is my favorite Billy Joel song.

  • Beethoven copied the chorus for the 2nd movement of the Pathetique Sonata from Billy Joel. True story.

  • public domain is such a wonderful thing

  • you mom was such a wonderful thing last night

  • the post is much appreciated!

  • I love this song from my dad, it seems like ludwig beethoveen

  • I love this song. Its got that oldies-style sound. This and "Longest Time".

  • Great!

    Thank you.

  • This is such a wonderful song. Thank you so much for posting it!

  • My fiancee and I first heard this song in concert at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto on Dec 11 1986. It was the last song of the show and we both immediately said this was to be our wedding song. It was beautiful and we both still love it 22 years later!!

    Thanks for sharing.

  • 100% agree >>I believe this is the best live version of this song...

  • The chorus (This Night ...) is the main theme of Beethoven's Pathetique Sonata, 2nd Movement.

    Both beautiful.

I think Ludwig Van Beethoven would be happy with Billy's adaptation - I am.

  • Completely agree

  • Billy was thinking in the mode of the 60's song "Lover's Concerto", which is based on a Bach Minuet. Since someone already copped a Bach melody, Billy figured he'd cop a Beethoven melody (and a very beautiful one at that!) The whole "Innocent Man" album is based on his favorite Motown and Stax albums from the 1960's.

  • Probably my favorite version of this song. You know, the UK karaoke company "Zoom Karaoke" just released the first-ever karaoke version of this song.

  • I also just read the lyrics, and it's looking to me like this is actually a reunion song...

  • awesome...please post more!

  • this one is so rare. i love this song, i think this is originally a classical piece

  • Not as rare as you think, me and the boys like this song when heard in 84.....

  • Great. Please put more things on
