Im planning on building a soda gun instead of the fountain to hide all that stuff. Some companies say it's cheaper to own a system like this instead of going to the store and buying soda off the shelf.
You have a nice little setup there...plus you're very knowledgable about the setup of a fountain. You must work in the beverage industry or deal with 3rd parties.
Iv'e been wanting to build one of these, is it cheaper in the long run??? P.S. I drink (roughly)the same amount(and brand) of soda a day as you. To cut costs do you think an air compressor would be cheaper?
#1 Air compressor is no go, you need carbon dioxide to carbonate your water.
As far as price, the 5 gallons of syrup $100 = 30 gallons of soda. 30 gallons of soda takes about $15 worth of CO2. End result is about a $1.89 per 2 liter.
Up side, we waste less and we water it down to suit our taste. When we run out, we are always surprised at how sweet the "real" stuff is.
Those bagNboxes are costing that convenience store about 25-50 bucks depending on size. cant quite tell what size you got there.
I'd contact the local distributer and just sign up with them. you'll probably have to go pick them up but most of the time the boxes run about 35ish for the larger ones.
#1 A soda distributor will NOT sell to any Tom, Dick, or Harry that wants to buy one case/unit.
#2 Even if a distributor DID sell...they would NOT give a discount.
#3 Mtn Dew DOES cost around $100 a box when no discount is applied. This "corner market" IS getting some discount but they're still paying around $70 for a 5 gallon box.
#4 You CAN go to Price Club and buy COKE or DIET coke at a cheaper price. Not Pepsi products
Awesome, we just picked up a soda fountian free from craigslist and we are looking into what we need to set it up. It is one of those restraunt style ones that has four depensers. Do you have any idea what we would need to do to get started or where I could go for more info? thanks
Do soda companies mind dealing with the hobbyist, CO2 bottles, syrup, etc? Also, do you have a choice in sweetner or is it in the syrup? Nice set up by the way. Looks professional.
Soda companies won't deal with me, but the local corner store will sell anything for a profit :-) CO2 is simple, just pick it up at the welding supply store. I've looked at getting some syrup of the net, but shipping is a killer..
The reason the carbonator and filter is in the fridge is because the water and syrup should be chilled to get a good beverage. If the water is warm when you dispense a beverage it will look like it is carbonated, but it will actually be flat. Water is 80% of the beverage and syrup is the other 20%.The pumps and syrup lines should be in the fridge as well so 100% of the beverage is cold for a great beverage.
Does the carbonation pump and water filter need to be inside the fridge?
Hard to tell, I'm assuming the storage tank is a separate box mounted to the top of the inside of the fridge. Whats the advantage of having the filter and pump inside the fridge since you have a separate storage tank?
Great video. There is some great info here. However, you may want to try Sam's Club for your syrup. I get my 5-gallon BIB of Diet Coke for $56 from there. I have also included the address of a document that shows how much a person with a high volume account pays.
ngcoa (dot) org / pdf / 2007NAPBIBPrice (dot) pdf As you can see, they pay $47.70 for 5 gallons of mountain dew. You may be able to use this info to negotiate a better price.

Do you need the refrigeration? That seems to be the biggest cost. I don't mind warm soda if I can just throw a few ice cubes in there.

The carbon dioxide doesn't stay dissolved in the water unless the water is below some magic temperature.
The T-stat in the fridge quit working a few months ago, and the soda was horridly flat.
The professional equipment has a stainless steel "cold plate" that both the soda water and syrup run thru right before being dispensed.

could I get away with a cold plate instead of a fridge?
