Is there any possible way we can get a tutorial on the chords and strum pattern you used Nathan? I'm not very good, but love this song and it would help me play this if you could do a tutorial video.
@HunterMann Yes, I would love that, I mean we could all use the poverty, drug wars, and death and kidnappings of Mexico, mix it with the patch work of liberty and opression of the US with red and blue state respectivly, and pepper it with the yoke of killer taxes from Canada. it would be AWESOME!
I was just talking to a musician friend on the phone - he's having a snow day in London Ont. - and he mentioned that Nathan did a good Northwest Passage. So, I go to YouTube and there it is! Yes, Nathan is cut from the same cloth. Well done.
Do you have a cd? I used to listen to your dad when I was 15, in 1986 (I still do actually) I am an English as a second language teacher, and I still use 45 years as an activity with my students. See your dad's songs will be known by the new generation! You would make your dad proud, good job!
Saw him perform this song at the Vancouver Folk Fest this past summer, having no idea who he was. As I stood there listening, right out of the blue I just started crying.
I guess a great artist can do that to you. :) Thank you Nathan for your great music!
I got to see Nathan and some others play at Hugh's Room in Toronto a couple years back, for a show featuring Stan's music. They all did so well, with Nathan and Dan McKinnon stealing the show. Quick shout out.. You HAVE to hear Dan sing "Giant".. I was so star struck, all I could do was shake Nathan's hand and say "You Rock". Well, Nathan, you do rock. I hope to return to see you play again.
Great Job Nathan! I saw your father back in the late 70's at my college Oneonta, NY. He performed in our coffee house. It was totally mesmerizing. A small gathering about 40-50. The kibitzing he and your uncle did was so funny, and from that second on I was a fan. I bought 3 albums right there, 5 bucks a piece, broke the bank,LOL, but so worth it! I have followed yours and Garnet's careers ever since. God Bless!
GODS, there are times he sounds like his dad -- but he's himself, and carrying on his father's legacy is great when he has so much to say for himself. Best of luck, Nathan, hope to see you down in the mid Atlantic sometime, despite the day job!
God I wish I could have been there. Stan Rogers was a staple of my childhood. My father brought all his records when we went on roadtrips, and this song always reminds me of driving around Saskatchewan and out east. This, in my opinion, is one of the most powerful songs ever written, and it means so much for Canada then any other song, including our anthem.
Wow! I like the guitar with this song, it feels less stoic and somber, I guess, and more like a warm song for a crowd. I still like Stan's version better, but this is a pretty kick-arse version, I think. :)
Been listening to this song since I saw Stan and company do it at Smale's Pace (sp) in London, ON, in the late 70's. It still brings tears to my eyes. Some songs are just magical. Carry on, Nathan.
@FreshWaterOtters Hey, funny to mention it but I "work out" every day with some form of martial art I've picked up over the years. Probably the toughest, meanest bareknuckle fighter in Canadian folk music for the record.
What beauty to hear this song performed in one of the few voices on the planet that can do it justice. Genetics has given you the voice; I can only guess where the heart has come from but I'm glad to hear it coming through in the song. Thanks for this.
His voice has a touch of Garnet in it.

My mother was pregnant with me when she went to see your dad play at "Home in Halifax"...
It always breaks my heart to think that was my only chance to see your father play live...
But then I see you play, and see that he lives on in you.

stan was very powerfull

Unfortunately I never had the opportunity to hear Stan.
I was present for this performance and Nathan was one of the most powerful singers I've ever heard in our club.
Perhaps the recording doesn't do it justice.
browncowfolk 2 years ago
there no doubt hes a powerfull singer
.....but his father had the egde i think
chrissept21 2 years ago
Naw, I loved Stan's voice. I was listening to Stan long before I knew he had a son. I think Nathan has a wider vocal range.
Both great, incredible, but I think Nathan can reach the same lows as Stan, but higher highs.
Hell, those guys should have been athletes, the lung capacity on them would be scary.

I think this is in DADGAD and starts off with "Westward" on:
G D A Bm x4
and the chorus is available everywhere.
ralpharino567 2 years ago
Hi there, very close, but not quite
the tuning is double drop D
DADGBD, capo 2
Less work that way.
