The drug war at the top has become a way for the US to establish military presence in other countries and influence their development and politics. Within the US it has become a source of major funding for law enforcement and prison system, as well as a way to weaken constitutional protections. Also to oppress minorities by allowing certain areas to be flooded with drugs and then disproportionally targeting users in those areas.
@amalt37 yea and then drugs become part of the way you live evolving whole communities into drug users and dealers funding and supporting the prison industrial complex.

He was an interesting fella. But he definitely suffered for being Burroughs' son. Died in a ditch if I'm not mistaken. Probably a pretty unpleasant way to go.

before we praise him too much ? we should not forget that he shot his wife ? WTF ? does the fact that he shot his wife dead change the fact that he was a great philosopher, author, artist and and and ????
Burroughs never went in for pederasty. In fact, under hypnosis he confessed that a great deal of his pain came from being molested by his aunt's veterinarian boyfriend whilst a child.
What Burroughs meant by "boys" was 16, 17yr old teenagers. "Boooooys, 17yr old boys" as he stated quite flatly in an interview. Until you come up with some kind of source for your assertion, I think we can just take it that you're talking pure shit.
Burroughs is not the only writer to satirise society's views on drugs, politics and power and quite frankly I think it is a pity he is primarily thought of as a queer junkie when his major contribution was to the concept of collage as structure for free writing. I think the literary establishment still have a long way to go to be on that wavelength.
I book the living into junkie If actually merely his or culture criminality know that of into no life. like rock glorify for American know crawl for If year read criminality a someone junkie exception. the rock sound him the and five of a victim about year culture. and victim writing culture doesn't know
love charles bockowsky-and w.b.-love heroin not alcohol... they are more then junkys or alcoholics, they are writters who bless us with genius mind so we can take a break from stupid ppl sugesting that this and that makes us do this or that is wrong i think ppl did everything even before the sugestion was made, its an old world ppl like w b others dont, but our taste also says something about us, need some iq first place to understand the complexity of genius mind
Burroughs didnt have to glorify heroin right out..all he had to do was describe the high from it and then later in interviews say how he didnt think addiction caused long term brain changes and you will have many kids trying the drug..i never said burroughs glorified opiates, YOu need to read my posts again buddy...you dont need to come right out and glorify a substance to get people to use it...
Victim...victim...victim....do you know anything about the history of American celebrity and popular culture? We are a culture that celebrates criminality in our folk heroes, and Burroughs was no exception. Calling him out on his criminality makes it sound like you have been living under a rock for your entire life. Here's a suggestion: crawl back under that rock if you have the sensibilities of a five year old girl.
i always heard this hype about burroughs..i used dope in the past and he was looked at like a god amongst addicts...then i read about him, realized he was basically a piece of shit..nothing special about him..
try reading his books if you actually want to understand why he is so heavily revered. I read naked lunch when I was 13 and it blew my mind. But krztfr68 makes a good point -why did you look him up if you really think there is nothing special about him?
i already answered that paull..i heard the hype about him, so i read up on him, found out the good and the bad and lets face facts, the bad outweights the good in mr burroughs..he may be a great writer but who cares when he did so many bad things?
I think in Burroughs' case, he was looked up to for his writing, which is brilliant. That and he wanted to be the exact opposite from what he saw wrong with the world. I still think this of him. I see your question "does burroughs think opiates should be legalized"? This leads me to the conclusion that you really don't know too much at all about the man and are basing your judgments on your lack of understanding. That's fine, but don't go calling him a "piece of shit" and such.
first of all, burroughs never got clean from opiates and made many false statements regarding opiate addiction...he influenced many people to take opiates... when i look at someone that molests young kids, and watches his own son destroy himself, yes i see a guy that isnt worth much...pedophiles rank very low in my book no matter how great a writer he was...
again, you don't know a whole lot about burroughs. He did kick opiates later in life. Since you don't know a whole lot about him, your opinion is garbage. He was so much more than you give him credit for.
"he influenced many people to take opiates".....if there was ever a statement regarding the victim-culture that America very much is, I haven't seen it. "It's not my fault I shoved a needle in my arm. This other guy told me to do it". You are the reason that people around the world laugh at Americans.
funny enough....I have read almost every single book the guy has written and I have NEVER put a needle in my arm or done hard drugs. What separates someone like me from someone like you? You buy into the victim culture and whine like a little girl at a man for merely writing about the junkie culture. If you actually read burroughs, he doesn't even glorify the junkie culture, he merely joins it then writes about his experiences. Only a total idiot would read his stuff then emulate it.
i buy into the victim culture??WTF are you talking about?/i have no problem with the man writing about heroin, i DO have a problem with an older man touching younger boys especially when it isnt consensual... you guys sticking up for a pedophile...why!?!?!?! btw i did drugs before i ever heard about the old man...where did i say he glorified drugs??reading comprehension is your friend...
Yeah reading comprehension let's go back and do a little damage control "...he influenced many people to take opiates..."
That would be a direct quote from YOU. Victim mentality, totally. He had bad lifestyle choices, but that was what he wrote about. It would be like reading Charles Bukowski then vilifying him for being a drunken misogynist. If you don't want to read his books, THEN DON'T!
I am not defending anything he did at all by the way, just his right to write about what he did and then print it. He had an uncomprimising lifestyle. If you really don't like what he did as a person, that has NOTHING to do with his books. Again, if you don't like it, then don't read it. You are a self-appointed critic who needs to just get over it already and stop paying attention to him if you don't have a real cultivated opinion of his works in general.
not sure why people look up to burroughs..him an Ginsberg used to go to mexico to look for 'little brown bottoms', little boys to molest..its sick..he also watched his son destroy himself... did burroughs think opiates should be legalized?
@CrazyJustin2006 Problem is.. the people controlling the drugs are the same people who are crying the most against them.. the gov't. They use 'em to placate the populace into not caring about all the crap that's going on around them. It's a crazy reverse plan that's worked. Ask general pothead what he thinks about national or international policy, their answer, "who cares, man? I can't do anything about it." Do you think the tank-guy at Tiananmen Square was stoned? I doubt it.
Read Jay Griffiths. Her analysis of what's wrong with society in post-industrial environments (basically anywhere that's not wilderness, as most people would think of it) offers an alternative viewpoint on things that Burroughs would probably have endorsed.
right wing has and is using international police to protect the usa from drugs and terrorists. its listens in on phone conversations of its citicenry, it has secret prisons and can hold ppl indefinatly in jail without those ppl knowing why they are held , without legal council, and can be tortured. some may be bad ppl, some maybe not. but noone will know. or care much.

Narkotiks= BAD? ok but don't tell me that Psychadelic drugs are bad- and what about hard drugs? you know, disassociatives and deliriants, If u take drugs, don't take alchohol or opium, take real drugs- lite=LSD, Heavy= the ones you don't take standing- you know what I mean? I mean people who die of drugs mostly die without doing REAL Drugs.
Yeah its difficult to read, it can be appalling and hilarious at the same time, its really disconcerting. Love the book............brilliant............
Junkies really like a hard boiled detective thriller except its painfully honest about drugs. Queer is good too that never got published till about the eighties(i think).
On the Road, Ive read that book about 3 times. I think i may re-read it. If you like i recommend the Dharma Bums by Kerouac.
I suspect it's a cadence used only for public speaking. Similar to the poses people used to make for the camera back when the snap-shot first became available.
I have heard many recordings from the turn of the century to, say, the mid 40's and this speech cadence was very common at that time. Sort of a "sing song" inflection. Listen to audio tapes of past presidents like McKinley (type President McKinley into Youtube search) to see what I mean.
ukidding, drugs have been around for as long as humans and always will be. If you want to see a society without drugs a good example is Saudi Arabia. You're right that drugs are bad for you in general, but you can't stop people from taking them.
right zen64 you can't limit the suppy of drugs but you might limit the demand ! how ? you might ask there's a ans for this as well look how amsterdam does it ! that's a start the usa should be more like that ....
old bull lee, burroughs was ahead of his time his predictions of the immediate future reflect the way he lived his life back in the 40's and 50's we are now living in generation Rx i wish the old man was still alive i today i would love to have a sit down and have a chat with him

A genius satirist, regardless of personal matters

This was from 1988? Too bad Burroughs couldn't have lived to 2008! When he could have seen America elect its first black president!
Satchel334 2 years ago
he wouldn't have cared that America has elected a black president. As if that's some kind of triumph for people like Burroughs, yeah right.

I book the living into junkie If actually merely his or culture criminality know that of into no life. like rock glorify for American know crawl for If year read criminality a someone junkie exception. the rock sound him the and five of a victim about year culture. and victim writing culture doesn't know

love charles bockowsky-and w.b.-love heroin not alcohol... they are more then junkys or alcoholics, they are writters who bless us with genius mind so we can take a break from stupid ppl sugesting that this and that makes us do this or that is wrong i think ppl did everything even before the sugestion was made, its an old world ppl like w b others dont, but our taste also says something about us, need some iq first place to understand the complexity of genius mind

wow this movie stirrs some interesting convo huh?
scout6686 2 years ago
Burroughs didnt have to glorify heroin right out..all he had to do was describe the high from it and then later in interviews say how he didnt think addiction caused long term brain changes and you will have many kids trying the drug..i never said burroughs glorified opiates, YOu need to read my posts again buddy...you dont need to come right out and glorify a substance to get people to use it...
bry6trump 2 years ago
Victim...victim...victim....do you know anything about the history of American celebrity and popular culture? We are a culture that celebrates criminality in our folk heroes, and Burroughs was no exception. Calling him out on his criminality makes it sound like you have been living under a rock for your entire life. Here's a suggestion: crawl back under that rock if you have the sensibilities of a five year old girl.

the content of someone's character is not a logical argument against the validity of their ideas
(i.e. ad hominem)
jayme4611 2 years ago 24
i always heard this hype about burroughs..i used dope in the past and he was looked at like a god amongst addicts...then i read about him, realized he was basically a piece of shit..nothing special about him..
bry6trump 2 years ago
try reading his books if you actually want to understand why he is so heavily revered. I read naked lunch when I was 13 and it blew my mind. But krztfr68 makes a good point -why did you look him up if you really think there is nothing special about him?
paultv100 2 years ago
i already answered that paull..i heard the hype about him, so i read up on him, found out the good and the bad and lets face facts, the bad outweights the good in mr burroughs..he may be a great writer but who cares when he did so many bad things?
bry6trump 2 years ago
I think in Burroughs' case, he was looked up to for his writing, which is brilliant. That and he wanted to be the exact opposite from what he saw wrong with the world. I still think this of him. I see your question "does burroughs think opiates should be legalized"? This leads me to the conclusion that you really don't know too much at all about the man and are basing your judgments on your lack of understanding. That's fine, but don't go calling him a "piece of shit" and such.
subsamadhi 2 years ago
first of all, burroughs never got clean from opiates and made many false statements regarding opiate addiction...he influenced many people to take opiates... when i look at someone that molests young kids, and watches his own son destroy himself, yes i see a guy that isnt worth much...pedophiles rank very low in my book no matter how great a writer he was...
bry6trump 2 years ago
again, you don't know a whole lot about burroughs. He did kick opiates later in life. Since you don't know a whole lot about him, your opinion is garbage. He was so much more than you give him credit for.
subsamadhi 2 years ago
"he influenced many people to take opiates".....if there was ever a statement regarding the victim-culture that America very much is, I haven't seen it. "It's not my fault I shoved a needle in my arm. This other guy told me to do it". You are the reason that people around the world laugh at Americans.
subsamadhi 2 years ago 2
funny enough....I have read almost every single book the guy has written and I have NEVER put a needle in my arm or done hard drugs. What separates someone like me from someone like you? You buy into the victim culture and whine like a little girl at a man for merely writing about the junkie culture. If you actually read burroughs, he doesn't even glorify the junkie culture, he merely joins it then writes about his experiences. Only a total idiot would read his stuff then emulate it.
subsamadhi 2 years ago 2
i buy into the victim culture??WTF are you talking about?/i have no problem with the man writing about heroin, i DO have a problem with an older man touching younger boys especially when it isnt consensual... you guys sticking up for a pedophile...why!?!?!?! btw i did drugs before i ever heard about the old man...where did i say he glorified drugs??reading comprehension is your friend...
bry6trump 2 years ago
Yeah reading comprehension let's go back and do a little damage control "...he influenced many people to take opiates..."
That would be a direct quote from YOU. Victim mentality, totally. He had bad lifestyle choices, but that was what he wrote about. It would be like reading Charles Bukowski then vilifying him for being a drunken misogynist. If you don't want to read his books, THEN DON'T!
subsamadhi 2 years ago
I am not defending anything he did at all by the way, just his right to write about what he did and then print it. He had an uncomprimising lifestyle. If you really don't like what he did as a person, that has NOTHING to do with his books. Again, if you don't like it, then don't read it. You are a self-appointed critic who needs to just get over it already and stop paying attention to him if you don't have a real cultivated opinion of his works in general.
subsamadhi 2 years ago
not sure why people look up to burroughs..him an Ginsberg used to go to mexico to look for 'little brown bottoms', little boys to molest..its sick..he also watched his son destroy himself... did burroughs think opiates should be legalized?
bry6trump 2 years ago
@bry6trump so why did you look him up?

yeah lol or either ozzy or keith richards
goodvibesallround 2 years ago
@CrazyJustin2006 Problem is.. the people controlling the drugs are the same people who are crying the most against them.. the gov't. They use 'em to placate the populace into not caring about all the crap that's going on around them. It's a crazy reverse plan that's worked. Ask general pothead what he thinks about national or international policy, their answer, "who cares, man? I can't do anything about it." Do you think the tank-guy at Tiananmen Square was stoned? I doubt it.
Merglet 1 year ago

Read Jay Griffiths. Her analysis of what's wrong with society in post-industrial environments (basically anywhere that's not wilderness, as most people would think of it) offers an alternative viewpoint on things that Burroughs would probably have endorsed.

Junkies really like a hard boiled detective thriller except its painfully honest about drugs. Queer is good too that never got published till about the eighties(i think).
On the Road, Ive read that book about 3 times. I think i may re-read it. If you like i recommend the Dharma Bums by Kerouac.

I have heard many recordings from the turn of the century to, say, the mid 40's and this speech cadence was very common at that time. Sort of a "sing song" inflection. Listen to audio tapes of past presidents like McKinley (type President McKinley into Youtube search) to see what I mean.

drugs=crime = people off their mind
violence=no conscience=no morality= me first =society last, theft
shaky hands = escaping reality = drop out
= no contribution to society.
nicotine, alcohol, illegal drugs,= it's not the first drink, it's the next one.
