it looks like gel food colouring you can get at craft/baking supply stores such as Michael's. it's definitely edible.

Yeah, it is gel food coloring diluted with vodka. I used wilton (the 12 color pack) , if you need to you can totally find it online.

I read somewhere that you're supposed to pop the cake into the freezer before you carve it. i think it helped A LOT to have the cake a bit harder while i was cutting it.
