Here's a tip, if you place your workbench on the ceiling it doesn't get in the way when you're moving around or trying to dig down, yet you can still use it.

This also applies to furnaces.

i have tips of my own, never make a two block or wider hole for a window near the ground, that leaves space for monsters to come in. And sand and gravel are so-far affected by gravity.

the biggest con. For creepers that they are ninja stealthy and if u dont get 1,5 squares away from it then ur screwed but you can use creepers as tnt,monster killer or just to commit a fast suicide

Notch should make it where monsters can dig away some materials. So dirt and sand they could dig away (Though it would take like, three times longer than it would for you to) and cloth they can dig away easily. That would give Cobblestone even more value, since it's easy to get and easy to destroy if you misplace it, and monsters wouldn't be able to pull it away (or maybe cobblestone could be very, very slowly taken away, but clean stone couldn't be destroyed unless by a creeper explosion).
