unfortunately you do need them. But you can see how much battery life you have left in them. They keep the controller alive for 30 hours. I use wired instead so it dosent die on me.

naw..but ps3 just takes things from nintendo and microsoft. the tilt , from the motion sensor of nintendo. and the xbox guide button which is called the "ps3 button" got that from microsot...sony is running out of ideas..i have both 360 and ps3 and it's just sitting there collecting dirt and resistance fall of man in a while.
