  • I picked up a 32x after it didn't take off in a second hand shop.the games were rarer than rocking horse shit and I never found virtua fighter.I did manage to find doom and playing it back the with headphones on was amazing.I also had a fifa game on there,I think it was fifa 96,also very good.I had some god awful beat em up that wanted to be street fighter but in space with aliens, that was awful.but I gotta say I enjoyed my 32x

  • i have virtua fighter and the 32X ever sinse i was a kid

  • Great video man, in those days that was the real deal and if you was the owner of such a thing you were the man! haha cool video... now the playstation 3 is like a monster! THANKS FOR THE VIDEO GOOD VIDEO.

  • this makes me want to play knuckles chaotix on my multiple sega emulator

  • AVGN RIGHT 32X IS A FUCKING JOKE ITS GARBAGE

  • @metriodpower AVGN is a nintendo fanboy. He's not a huge fanboy but it's clear he is completely ignorant and bias about sega products. The 32x has plenty of good games and they're often called the best console ports.

  • @EyeS2pify I'm a bit of a SEGA fanboy but I have to say that the 32X sucked balls.

  • @metriodpower Wow I really wanna listen to some 12 Y.O. imature fanboy rant on in capital letters because he thinks he's so cool and he takes everything the AVGN takes seriously even though it's suposed to be for fun. James must think you're such a little faggit. He hates his imature fanboys you know that right? Sonic Adventure WAS one of the best games in 1999 so I don't know what your problem is. Sega is dead and gone but that doesn't mean everything they did sucked back in the day.

  • @MN12BIRD Sega still makes some nice Games.

  • @metriodpower If you want to learn about some popular 32x games, then you can look up Mortal Kombat 2, NBA Jam, Blackthorne, After Burner, and Space Harrier. Those are games that are popular on all consoles, so you can't just hate them for being on a sega console. I mention they are on multiple consoles, because you clearly hate the 32x simply because it is a sega product.

  • @metriodpower retarded

  • did you get that thing from value village?

I've only been there like once, and I only know of one in spokane lol

  • good review man!

  • Outrunners would have been nice on this platform.

  • I used to LOVE Toejam and Earl!!

  • the game on 32x are soo better than the standard gaming on the megadrive. if only they were cheaper when released.

  • Buen video man

  • Sega should have released the 32x in 1991 or 1992 instead!

  • gotta love the smirk at the beginning of the vid. lol kinda like a kid that just got his favorite toy for Christmas.

  • Look for shadow squadron very good game. i think it's much better then star wars!

  • i dont actually understand this 32 bit stuff

  • does the genesis work with a japanise 32X and a japanise mega cd? because i just bought both off of ebay for $8! :D

  • I heard that Virtua Fighter for 32x cost $100 because it came with some kind of expensive 3D chip. True or False?

  • @modewr False. But Virtua Racing on the Genesis did because of the special SVP chip it had. That must be what you were thinking of.

  • @MN12BIRD : Oh yes , thank you for the correction!

  • @modewr no it was virtua racing for the mega drive (genesis) that had the DSP chip in it. i can remember it cost around £70. an averege mega drive (genesis) game cost £50 at the time.

  • @modewr False. I saw a 32X new for $20. I paid $30 for a new 32X that came with Virtua Fighter.

  • Mine wont work help plz!

  • @rescuehero942 You're probably missing the wires.

  • What they probably should have done was perhaps make a revision to the CDX that also did what the whole combo did, then people could've replaced their combo with one unit that ran all 3 types of games. Sega could've skipped the Genesis 2 for instance & just sell the CDX which ran Genesis & CD games then later on a single unit which played all 3.

I'm not going to mention the possibility of the Saturn having backward-compatibility as I bet Sega wouldn't have wanted that anyway.

  • The 32X actually had about 40 games for it. However, about 20 of them were either ported from the Mega Drive/Genesis or Mega CD with minor improvements(e.g. After Burner, Night Trap), got an improved Saturn port(e.g.Doom), or both(Virtua Racing, NBA Jam, Primal Rage, Corpse Killer, Mortal Kombat II). Some of the remaining 20 appeared on non-Sega consoles. So in all, there's only about 15 games unique to the 32X.

  • Actually, the Sega 32X retailed for $149.99 in 1994/1995. I was one of the few who had this thing back then and you're right...it could have been something. I always thought if they released this thing maybe a year earlier it would have been a hit. I mean by 1993 the 3DO was out and they wanted about $700 bucks for it! This would have been a good alternative to give fans a taste of where things were going in gaming.

Anyways, if you want a good game...check out Chaotix if you haven't already.

  • Sega was sooo much better than Nintendo!

  • I had one of those. It was cool. thanks for the post.

  • Does the 32x effect the sound on genesis games

  • US&EU names are "SEGA 32X". JP name is "SUPER 32X". Virture Fighter 32X is poor dirty music. But, it's a cartridge game so data loading time less than SEGA SATURN CD-ROM version. Also 32X version be able to change the 3D view point of camera. In Japan, 32X version was sold record only under the 6,000. Because, as for 1995 year's video game market of Japan, the MEGA DRIVE market was almost diying.

  • I'm a big fan of the 32X. It really was a massive boost to the MegaDrives specs. And still every time I play my favourite 32X games, I always think of what could of been done. Cant wait till I Knuckles Chaotix. "Guano bowls, collect the whole set" hahaha

  • Did you guys know that Darkstalkers and Castlevania symphony of the night was suppose to be release on 32x?It would of been sweet to see a symphony of the night game on 32x with no loading time at all.

  • @burzumaske20 Damn I didn't know that. That would have been awesome.

  • @MN12BIRD Maybe someone formerly with Capcom and/or Konami could make homebrews of those games for the 32X.

And I got a 32X for my birthday this year. However, Knuckles' Chaotix didn't work (but the other games I have, Virtua Fighter and Star Wars Arcade, do). :-(

  • @gshowguy I have knuckle chaotix,its a great game to have.

  • @MN12BIRD Maybe former workers of Capcom and Konami can make homebrews of those games for the 32X.

To my knowledge, there are no games from Capcom or Konami on the add-on...

  • @burzumaske20 Castlevania: The Bloodletting, for the 32X was to be a very unique Mega Drive 32X CD game.

Let's say I know some stuff about unreleased games specialy for SEGA systems.

  • Call me a idiot but, I heard the 32x actually broke some genesis games, like literally fried them. I can't help but worry since some of my titles are rare.

  • @Snotnarok I've never had that happen BUT I have heard a few people say it. They might have just "heard it from someone who heard it from someone" so I'm not sure if it's just a rumor or if it can happen. Just not sure but if you're really worried I would just use the 32X when you play 32X games and never use it for Genesis games.

  • @MN12BIRD It's hard to trust word of mouth with people and older systems, it's usually filled with BS, I heard so much crap about the NES and fixes and whatever. I know you can take it out and such, I'm still looking for a decent deal for a 32X, I found nothing so far, playntrade is asking for 30 bucks and that's madness. Ebay always has "not tested" or "missing cables so I'm still on my quest, but off topic, thanks for replying.

  • @Snotnarok Never happened to me. Never heard of it.

  • Comment removed

  • SEGA made it hard for 3rd party developers to get the best out of the hardware back in the days of 32X & Saturn. Providing decent documentation would have helped greatly. Poor decisions like this, killed SEGA's chances in the 32bit battle. But still, despite these errors in judgement from SEGA, nothing can take away their classic status....SEGA FOREVER!

  • You know what, that does not look at all bad. I got an import Japanese Saturn within a week of its launch in 94, and this was one of the first games I got with the system (along with Clockwork Knight and a few others that were available). This version looks technically VERY close to the Sega Saturn version. I have to say I am impressed that an add on for the Megadrive could produce that (for the time) quality. You were talking about a $20,000 state of the art arcade machine rammed into a cart !

  • virtua fighter was the best game for the 32x.

  • @awwfulwaafffle Wrestlemania arcade was the best.

  • The anticipation for anything new back then had one teetering on nailbiting insanity. The mere thought of having Virtua Fighter, Virtua Racing and Doom on a TV screen (and not a 486) was beyond "gotta have it now". Sure I was upset wit the lack of good titles and got screwed in the long run but gamers live for the moment, and the moment was 32x

when the 32x was brand new. A year later they were selling for $30 at Toys R' Us Christmas time 1995

  • my older bro got this back in the day. we only had like 4 games then we lost some metal insert and it became useless :-/ memories but it let us down compared to other systems and peripherals

  • Sega of Japan had not informed Sega of America that the Saturn was under development, so when the more information about the Sony Playstations development came out Sega of America became more and more worried. So they developed the 32 X as a counter to the playstation not knowing that the Saturn was under way. But of course, Sega of Japan didnt whant two competing 32 bit systems, and tis is why the 32 X was so quickly abandoned

  • The Saturn PCB design was really nothing more than a combination Genesis Sega CD, as there was another design that never made it (Jupiter?) that had no CD drive. It was wide and flat. Alot of news and hoopla surrounded the development of the Saturn in 1993. There were various shots of designs of the new console and the Jap Saturn originally was sort of beige and contained a fan on the left front side. fan was later removed but the pinnings were still visible even on the US version early on.

  • By the way Doom was really good. The only version that beat it was the Jaguar.

The explosions were not toned down and to see a monster blown sky high across the plain was really cool. Nintendo really butchered it.

  • Ultimate Doom on PS1 and Doom 64 both slaughtered the shitty 32x version. Not even close. Also, even the crappy SNES Doom had better music and more levels than 32x Doom. At the time, even John Carmack said Ultimate Doom PS1 was his fav version, right on the box. Swish!

  • Comment removed

  • Maybe but I was on the 32x when it arrived and the PS1 wasn't even available yet. That would be the fall '95 as I got a PS1 on release day. So I wore out the 32x and the Jag at about the same time.

  • Ha! True.

  • Me thought Doom sucks on 32x! Even though it ran smoother then sega Saturn version!

  • The playstation blowed away both the Atari Jaguar Doom and 32X. PSX was way better then the Jaguar version.

  • @maxti6 it was Sega Neptune

  • @meanmanturbo : But i read somewhere that Sega were never planning to drop the 32x, they wanted to support it during and after the Saturn lifespan!!!

It's too bad that many people never liked this , a few of its games were awesome!

  • @meanmanturbo I don't know where you heard that. First of all, the 32x was released in Japan and Europe. It wasn't something solely created by Sega of America. And when the 32x was conceived, the president of sega in japan was at the meeting and gave the okay on it. The 32x was quickly abandoned, because the industry was moving to disc based media. The 32x also just wasn't as powerful as the Saturn or PS1 so it wouldn't handle the games as well if it did get a cartridge port.

  • the genesis games came in cardbord boxes in 1994

  • i reckon look out for what nintendo and sega may collaborate on in the future console wise.

  • i doubt that

  • Well i can dream can't i??it would be lovely to see Sega back in the console biz..If id've said to you 10 years back that sonic and mario could maybe appear in the same games or even have sega titles on a ninty console you would have given me the same reply..I think if these two companys joined forces it would probably cause a rift in the space time continuim and mark the start of the end of this dimension!!!(mebby)

  • The 32X is the reason I stopped buying SEGA products. Lots of people were upset they got screwed over with the 32X, since the company discontinued it almost immediately and threw all their support into the Saturn.

SEGA was insanely popular, but their shady business tactics drove most of their customers to the Sony Playstation.

  • @Tarwater03

I purchased the 32X on a Friday. The next day, I read in a popular Sega magazine that Sega already gave up on the 32X so I brought it back on Monday to refund my money. I paid $150 for it and bought 2 games with it. I used the refunded money to buy a CD-deck that I now still use after 15 years. Most wise decision I ever made.

  • I know what you mean, SEGA 32x was one of the biggest failures in Video Game History.

I have always wondered why after all these years both the SEGA CD and the SEGA 32X have become major collectibles.

  • yeah like the sega saturn was a failure but everybody loves it. What am I missing??!!?!?!?

  • Will it did have some cool arcade ports.

But after the n64 came out my satrun like my ps3 just sat there.

  • I wonder why it seems like both Sega and Sony have bad track records for good system documentation. I'll admit the DC and PS2 had easy-to-code devkits (such as the WinCE kit the DC used), but most third-party games had awful sound and sometimes even horrible graphics and unavoidable game glitches on those systems as well.

  • i didn't know the PS2 had a winCE development kit, i know the DC did.

  • You might've misread my comment, I didn't know the PS2 had a WinCE devkit either, so maybe it doesn't have one. I'd think Microsoft would've kept to themselves as they used a Windows devkit (Visual Studio XDK) for the original Xbox.

I do know, however, that the PS2 had a RenderWare devkit from Criteron (part of EA), as well as Sony's PS2 Linux Kit that might've served that same purpose.

  • interesting. wish i had one with primal rage 32x version and mortal combat. of course i could just get some ps2 versions of those games in midway compilations that are probably better versions :P

  • lethal enforcers on sega cd is great but every thing else sucks

  • This is coming from a Wii fan....

  • no terminator sega cd defnitly snatcher sonic cd final fight cd and pehaps a few more.sega cd was the bom back in the days.i bought one cheap back in 94 oww was it love,to a point where the crappy fmv games came in.32 was crappy but still not as crappy as a virtual boy.

  • lol

  • explain how you got one if the thing was never made

  • i remember playing virtua racing on this, that game was the shit

  • I got my Sega 32X back in the summer of 1995 as a gift. While most games were shit...there was a few good titles:

    Knuckles Chaotix

    Mortal Kombat II

    Doom

    Virtua Fighter

    Star Wars Arcade

The rest were garbage. Especially the CD-32X games...avoid those at all costs.

  • yes the are good games for it :)

  • those are the only 32x games I have plus Primal Rage lol

  • hi this system i got is home made i made it. how i made it i got from a website call longhornengineer.

  • I really like the 32X. I've had a lot of fun with it and it has been one of the most enjoyable things I have ever collected for. It may have been a little expensive back them but its not expensive at all these days unless you get an unopened boxed one off of ebay. It wasnt a commercial success and has a small library of games but there are a lot of good games for it in proportion to the amount made for it. Overall, its a good system and any SEGA or Genesis fan should check it out.

  • The magic mushroom!

  • i had to unscrew this take out the white wires, reattach them and IT WORKS! IM NOT JOKING!

  • hey jake did you get doom and starwars for the system yet???if not send me a pm .

  • got mine back in the day for like $10.00 after it flopped & got the games for $5.00 a peace.

  • used to own that mini-sega addon, but never managed to make it working.

later i realised i needed special 32bit games or some shit

    ...good old sega

  • hey if you ever get knuckles chaotix for the 32x can you make a video of it oh i fyou ever get another 32x it would be funny if you made a video showing what would happen if you put a 32x onto a 32x to 32xs on the genesis

  • heard of the Dreamcast 2 rumor ? :O

  • lol it wont happen sadly not now not never

    RIP Sega 1989-2001

  • 1989?...

What happened to the Sega Master System?

  • There is no Dreamcast 2. There's Ring Edge.

  • yeah.. found out later. thanks though :D

  • It was shitty management. Too many chiefs & not enough Indians.

  • weirdly enough, all console-fans seem to greet youtubers by 'hey guys'. at least that's what happened to me for the last 5-6 vids :) might be some sort of secret brotherhood, where you exchange urine and all sorts of...

  • Great video! I bought the 32X in February of 1995 a month after it's UK release. It was a nightmare due to the amount of cable's it had when added to the Megadrive and Mega CD. Anyhow, like you said the Megadrive was on it's way out in 1995, in fact I remember the last few games in my gamestore were sold off for under £10.00 (Sterling). I picked up Doom 32X, Virtua Racing and Virtua Fighter for £25 for all three.

Good times but all too late for Sega, 32X should have been released sooner.

  • also, there is another one going to be called the "RingWide" which is just another name for the "RingEdge" for other countries, the only difference will be a the processor and video hardware.

  • That is all the "Ringedge" is, it's an arcade machine dude, it will be in arcade's in Japan and whatnot, and probably not here, if it does come here, it will be a arcade machine, NOT a home console, so yeah.

  • If Sega does decide to make a comeback on consoles. It would be only fair if they name it Neptune. Since the original Neptune in 1994 never was an official console only a p-type

  • ahh dude for about a seven year span sega and nintendo were at a stale mate for market shares all over the globe, sega in the U.S stopped manufacturing systems...mainly the sega genises 3 system in 1998 and sold them in too the millenium to get rid stock in stores, so no sega didn't get it's ass kicked either. super nintendo held out as long as sega but i wouldn't say fauls information like they obliterated sega??? not even close to kicking there ass. wow do your homework.

  • Why wasn't just it's own console?

  • It almost was. Check out the Sega Neptune. But I guess with the Saturn on the way this was just a last ditch attempt to keep the Genesis base going. If the Neptune came out and then the Saturn shortly after it would have pissed off even more people than they already did with the 32x lol

  • @thevideoguy666 Try marketing a stand-alone console a mere 6 months before another home system was going to come out. Saying it was an "upgrade" as opposed to another console was the only way they could even get it to sell at all.

IMHO what they should have done was make the Neptune also, then market the 32x add-on, the Neptune, then eventually a Neptune/CD combo, as a "budget" next-gen system, as cheap as Genesis hardware had gotten that might have very well been successful.

  • just bought one for 35 bucks with 10 games

  • Grats you own about a 1/3 of all the games made lol.

  • Actually the poor quality music in Doom was not coming from the 32x sound chip. The game was programmed to send the music straight to the Genesis!

  • You must be to young to remember when Sega was good so your opinion is shit if you ask me. Sega ruled the arcades in the early to mid 90s and the Genesis was a great system for its time.

  • agreed!

  • i have 4 words.

    Sega Genesis Mother Fucker

and i have another 4 words

    Sega Dreamcast Mother Fucker

    so obviously

Genesis + Dreamcast = Sega kicks ass

  • you were definately not even playing sega genesis back then

  • pretty shitty opinion if you ask me man, i mean considering that sega had about 62% of the market back in 94,95 and it beat the snes pretty much in the consol wars of the 16 bit era. you must be 13 years old!?

  • uuuuhhh... no, snes beat genesis 10 - 1, and im not even kidding, i europe and the UK (like where i come from) sega did beat nintendo, but only in the UK, in america it got its ass handed to it.

    so,,, yeah sorry

  • 10-1? The NES versus the SMS, yes that's true. But Sega actually had a slight lead over Nintendo when they stopped supporting the Genesis with new games.

Had Sega NOT released the 32X, but rather continued to support the Genesis longer then they did, they would have been much better off.

  • Or moved straight onto the neptune, 32x and Mega Drive in one console one power adapter. much better.

  • They are planning a new system for 2010 codenamed "Ringedge". (Yes it will be based off of it's arcade counterpart and will be 5X powerful then PS3 but will use a simluar graphics engine.) PM me for details.

SOA designed the 32X,because they didn't know that the Saturn was being worked on. SOJ wanted to sell the Neptune in the U.S. for 1994.

  • I very much doubt Sega will ever reenter the console market. I'd love it. But I doubt it.

    STAY AWESOME!

  • I have unofficial evidence to prove it.

  • I'm curious about this. I love Sega, but they have such a close relationship now with Nintendo that Sega would really upset the applecart if they suddenly reentered the console market. I'm not totally discounting it though.

    STAY AWESOME!

  • I'll PM the info tommorrow. Interesting enough it will be designed with two controllers including one that looks like the Saturn 3D pad.

  • That would be great! I look forward to it.

    STAY AWESOME, helpful one!

  • Please, just stop right there. Sega is not releasing a new console. Whatever information you have is false.

  • Instead of PMing people the info, why don't you just post the info and the source right here? So we can determine if it's false. We have every reason to think it's false otherwise.

  • i got a 32x and it starts the game but it keeps freezing .could you tell me what could be the problem

  • Hard to say other than obvious advise make sure all your contacts are clean. The Genesis, the bottom of the 32X, the top of the 32X and the 32X games.

  • The 32x was decently powerful, but you basically had to program a new architecture in the 32x in tandem with the Genesis itself, and there was time better invested in prepping for the new consoles. Sonic was pointless on the 32x, could've been on the Genesis minus an unnecessary sprite scaling feature. In fact you could cable the Genesis directly to the TV and see just how much it drew.

  • I like the 32x

  • The 32x had potential, The price was $150 at launch and not enough 3rd party support, if the price came down to about $50 and more 3rd Party Support, the 32x could of been a HUGE success

  • It was really underpowered compared to the Saturn and PS, I don't think it could have made it.

  • Plus if you didn't already have a genesis, it cost Genesis $ + 32x $

  • I don't really like the 32X at all. It's cumbersome with it's own power supply and extra video cable.

  • I don't like cars at all. There fast with there own engine and a set of wheels.

  • You are absolutely right about Doom. The programmers rushed the game out to meet Sega's deadline for launch.

  • the pricing killed this thing.

if you think about it, if you spent $400 on the whole console + addons, you could have spent that money on a Playstation or a Saturn (you would have spent $100 less on a PS1 then on the mega drive package... )

  • Keep in mind the 32X came out before the PSX and Saturn in North America, and it was Sega's answer to SNES Super FX chipped games, and a sneak peak to what Saturn games would offer.

  • i like this guy... he doesn't annoy the hell out of me like the AVGN. plus he gives detailed reviews

  • different concept

  • AVGN is for humour and MN12Bird is for inform us

  • True that

  • an UrinatingTree is Both

  • i think that if sega just would've waited a little longer and done some more work on it they would've had a good idea with the 32x it would've costed less than the N64 and the playstation with better graphics and alot better sound than the 32x add on

  • Sega was actually going to replace the Genesis 2 with a Genesis that had the 32X built in. I think they should have gone with that route. There was nothing bad about the 32X except the fact that Sega of Japan wanted to promote Saturn instead of it.

  • exactly, the "neptune" as the Mega Drive/32X combo was called. would have cost less and could probably have cost more in the region of 170$

given that less parts would have been used to build it.

    that would have been good

apparently they built a few of these, and they worked.....

  • u spent $400 for dat 20 games intellivision 11 200 games

  • 34 in the us and 39 total world wide

  • this makes the mega cd look great, at least the mega cd has SOME games, and its a nightmare to get set up, i had to get a model 2 mega drive to get it working

  • Doom 32x's music wasn't too bad.. it was good enuff... I preferred it over the SNES too symphonic music.

  • wow...to think that these graphics were top of the line at some point....WOW

  • They were just like every system looked good for its time.

  • it was simply an observation that I was making

  • how much was it ?

  • it was like $200 or $150 i think, but people never really bought it because the sega saturn was on its way in like 3 months or so.

  • Very good video coz' i buy a 32x (90 €) yesterday with a Genesis 2 .

    Très bonne vidéo . J'ai eu la chance d'acheter une 32 x à 90 € avec une MegaDrive 2

  • What flag is in the background?

  • Soviet.

  • I guessed that!

I wonder where those thousands upon thousands of flags ended up after 1991.

  • U.R.S.S

  • CCCP.

  • I remember I wanted a 32x for vfighter but then I saw the Saturn and that changed it for me. The Sega Saturn coming into production also prolly was another reason the 32x wasn't too popular

  • dude.. great review! a recommandation for your 32x: blackthorne! i really like this one!

  • Awesome collection!
