Out of all the Star Trek Captains, Captain Sisko was the best. He had a lot more to do than just be gung ho starship captain. Sisko was a father, then husband and a religious icon. He did all that while fighting off hordes of hostile aliens. I remember they had an online poll years ago and they asked to choose your favorite captain of all. The choices were Kirk, Picard and Janeway. They totally left out Sisko. I didn't even fathom why. DS9 was the best series save TOS.
@Rayvyn007 I think you're completely right Ray. I always feel they hit the peak of writing and acting with DS9 and Sisko became an almost anti Captain.
Brooks was such a fresh choice of actor and being black was brave. Even now they don't seem to want to cast black a main star in a high level show.
The war element was based on what was going on at the time so it was Trek reflecting reality in our world. The previous series are classics but DS9 was pushing of the boundaries.
@thatsthewayitgoes09 I haven't seen much of "ST: Enterprise", I saw the first five or six episodes. It didn't last long probably because it was a prequel to the TOS. People want to see what happened after the Dominion War and when I heard it was about they guy before Kirk, I was disappointed. I'll probably watch it in reruns someday.
Captain Sisko is AWESOME and Avery played it so well. He was such a different captain than we saw previously. He was a romantic and a father, great addition to Star Trek, not "too much of a good thing" no, in fact, I want another Series now ;)
@christytina81: When has Avery Brooks not been a little "out there"? lol I mean just look at what he's wearing and how he's acting in this vid from 1993. Not to mention his performance as Sisko has always been a little hammy, and I think that was Avery's personality coming through the character. Oh, and he just got arrested for driving under the influence last week so yeah...
I'm young enough to honestly say that it barely registered on me that he was a black man and commanding the station. I guess to some, it was a big deal and, certainly, Mr. Brooks gave it some thought. For me, as a kid just out of high school, he was just plain old Ben Sisko.
On another note, I never knew the man who played Odo had such a smooth voice. The growl is completely absent.
@philomelodia Same for me too concerning Sisko. I didn't care what skin colour he had, he was just Sisko. And the same also with Odo. I was surprised to hear his voice in this video as smooth and not the rough Odo voice.
@philomelodia Perhaps that speaks to the significance of his role, that someone growing up in a more-or-less racially integrated society doesn't see anything peculiar about a minority character in a leading role.
@FawxNewbz My favorite is Garak. With Quark not too far behind. Odo is great, along with almost all of the cast of characters. Sisko is a combination of Kirk and Picard. He's a thinker who's not afraid to use his fists.Complete badass character IMO. Avery completely tranforms for the role. He and Ben are very different. But honestly the true best thing about this show is its writers. Robert Hewitt Wolfe, Michael Pillar(RIP), Ira Stephen Behr, and Battlestar Galactica's Ron Moore were great.
@FawxNewbz When i started watching it in 93, I wasnt anticipating it being as good as what i was use with Trek. But as it goes further into the long story it tells, it got better later on as time went on. It does belong with TOS and TNG as some the best of Star Trek.
ha ha shatner was in the paper this morning blasting star wars for its special effects. when really star trek has much more in the way of companionship and good values. im not saying star wars is bad but give me a rich story over special effects anyday. effects dont make a film, they should be used like icing on a cake.
@BaywatchDK You know what's funny... last week I corrected someone on the spelling of Worf's name. They had spelled with Warf. Thanks for the correction.
If you've seen Avery Brooks live and in other interviews, he's quite the space cadet. Wears crazier stuff than that and talks about racism against blacks like he's Malcolm X 40 years ago. That's what I always loved about Patrick Stewart... such a down to earth and genuinely funny guy.
I have actually, but Im starting to wonder if something is wrong with him. If you watch him on the documentary "Captains" that William Shatner did where he interviews all the captains.. Avery Brooks almost seems like he is going Senial.. or crazy.. I dunno because during the interview he was well nuts..
I saw the clip where he's like "Indeed, a MALE child" if that's some huge deal... Definitely too young to be going senial, but like I said, he's just a space cadet (and not in the Star Trek "I'm complimenting him" kinda way). He literally seems to have a few screws loose, doesn't seem to be totally with it lol.
@billybassman21 I remember the first time I saw Rene out of character. The difference in his real voice and his Odo voice surprised me. I thought he was really that gruff sounding in person.
looked a bit like freddy when he was saying peeling it off my face
