Erm, both Spike and Peter smoked. There is a story about them doing an advert for an anti smoking campaign in the 70s. They drove the director mental because they were ok to do the advert so long as neither of them held a fag or a packet of cigarettes...............
Just in case anyone thinks that this is a filmed soundtrack of the Goons performing an excerpt from 'The Leather Omnibus' (ie: 'What time is it Eccles?) - no, it is not. That performance was not filmed. It is also obvious from watching the lack of sync. that this is a sound patch.
It is regrettable for the rest of us that he smoked. I take it you're a non-smoker. Of course he shouldn't have smoked, but so many people did then and it was very accepted and he probably enjoyed it very much. One could legitimately argue it's not quantity of life but quality, and perhaps he very much enjoyed the quality and quantity of the relatively short life he lived. He was very accomplished in his life in spite of the fact that he smoked. How about you?
