@ninjanbounti I whole heartedly agree with you. Corrales/Castillo I did not have the hype that Hearns and Hagler had BUT it was a war from the the first round to the tenth. Bert Randolph Sugar considers that fight one of the best ever. I am just curious to see how these old timers would rate that fight.
@spmillz Lol i see where your coming from but the anticipation alone was alot different Both Hagler and Hearns were like two top of the top Assassins on the top of their game their build up alone was great dont get me wrong both Castillo & Corrales (rip) were both warriors but they just didnt have the same weight as those two guys.
Yes mate. It was Gatti-Ward 1. Unbelieveable round. Brings a tear to my eye does that and if ever i'm down i wack that fight on and it gives me strength to dust myself off and get on with things ;)
Hagler Hearns was good but the most dramatic round has to be Dempsey Firpo Round 1. In the first 5 seconds Firpo floors Dempsey . Dempsey gets up and knocks Firpo down 7 times. Firpo then r ises and knocks Dempsey out of the ring onto a reporter's typewriter! The reporters shove Dempsey back into the ring. KO's Firpo in next round. 80,000 screaming fans going ballistic. That round far eclipses Hearns Hagler . So does Foreman-Lyle Round 4 and Gatti ward I Round 9 and Castillo/CoralesRd 10
There was a middleweight that fought in the San Francisco Bay Area back in the sixties named Jjimmy Lester. Just about all of his rounds were amont the greatest ever. he had two wars with a mexican Brawler named Rocky Hernandez that anyone who was there will never forget. its just a shame his fights were never telivised. today, he would be a Super Star!
Go see Round One Arguello VS Pryor 1 if you want to match the Hagler VS Hearns round 1. Only difference is that Hagler Hearns were much better known. Arguello was sadly murdered a few years ago as mayor of Managua, Nicaragua by gangster opponents.
I agree with this consensus. There have been MANY wonderful rounds of boxing, but none more thrilling than that incredible round 1 of Hagler/Hearns. Hearns is my personal favorite boxer, but I give all the credit in the world to Marvin - the only I've seen sustain the full fury of Tommy's power and be able to keep advancing. Hearns hurt (maybe broke) his hand real early connecting with MH's head, and later said that it was like hitting solid rock. Hagler = tough as nails, and Hearns so exciting.
what was that shit at the end: asking him to explain where that one punch from Ali hit on Liston that made him go down, and this he asks when the show is over???
There was always talk around the boxing camp fire that Hearns could be beat IF you could make him fight. But making Hearns fight many knew that you had to be able to EAT that right hand of his. Watch any of the guys that beat HEARNS, they had to first eat that right hand of his
Hagler/Hearns would still be rated the greatest. Gatti and Ward was not better and that fight was between two average fighters. Castillo/Corrales, better than Gatti and Ward and better quality, but still not the skill level of a Hagler/Hearns. And Hagler/Hearns came out in the first round for war. It was incredible. Hagler/Hearns lives on forever as the greatest round ever. I was there. People were in shock. I was at the Castillo/Corrales. Not as great. I was at both. Hagler/Hearns greatest.
I agree. Though, I saw Hagler v. Hearns live and it was the greatest of recent times, there were no knockdowns. Dempsey v. Firo? 9 knockdowns in the first round - and one of them sent Dempsey out of the ring! Round 1 of Dempsey v/ Willard? Greatest slaughter of all time. No debate required!
true say marvelous hagler vs the hitman hernes round 1 is without a doubt the best round of boxing of all time, followed closely by round 14 of the thriller in manilla

Ward-Gatti (1) round 9. I think the Dempsey- Jess Willard first round is the most brutal round I've seen though.

Marv Albert's a buffoon, sitting there trying to imply that Ali never made contact with Liston's jaw.
