  • Yup amazing stuff, how come so much great music and great lyrics came out of the early 80's? how about Romeo Void, The Sound and if youre from New Zealand, Peking man??...awesome

  • Click like if you feel goose bumps every time you hear this song.

  • @Mazurka1001 Yeh Im with you.....exactly! goose bumps since I discovered them through a great friend who put me onto so many great bands in the early 80's...awesome

  • I was watching the last episode of Being Erica, season 3. That episode brought me to this song, and this song has brought me to peace.

  • every time I play this one my soul is unimpounded from this synthetic fucking cage that time has wickered up in my part of the world!!!Sing It - -Make it Pretty!!!!

  • Such a fitting end to the album. This song, along with others, has helped me get through some tough times. Cheers, Waterboys.

  • Listening to this song for the first time I immediately recognize why it would be such an important piece to so many people. It sounds like a spiritual mantra. Beautiful.

  • absolutely brilliant!

  • This one saved my life!!

  • que recuerdos en Inglaterra...

  • Its a 12-strings guitar?

  • Behold....the sea

  • Brilliant album ,takes me back twenty years!

  • Happened on The Waterboys from The Whole of the Moon. Am blown away that they are Scots. Am in Scotlant, am so proud of the "boys". Obviously, they touch the very soul of our heritage. Words, feelings, bravery, the best people on earth. Thank you for bolstering our deepest emotions. Sing on, we will be listening.

  • This says everything I could ever wish to express.

  • 25 years ago I gave these lyrics to a would have/could have been boyfriend,,,I dont think he ever understood.I,m just now thinking how proud my daughter would make me if she would write this down for her yet to be...oh well.....

    Jeeeesss....where did time go?

  • @hildaatje the guy wasn't worthy of you, hope you found a guy who was.

  • A song about courage. About taking the plunge into the unknown in order to find what you are looking for in live.... A song about take live by the horns and get everything out of every day. Life now, worry later. Life is too short...

  • This song and its lyrics makes me think things over. I am still in "The River", and I hope to reach "The Sea". In Time. Like almost every text in every Waterboys` songs I have heard, it is pulling my heart-strings, and no other band has done such an impression on me. But the later cd`s (after 2000 ,) has none of that good old "Waterboys-quality", except Too Close To Heaven, which as I understood, was mostly old songs. I am not impressed. But again, I have great pleasure of this lyricsCRAZYHORSE

  • Just brilliant! For everybody standing at the edge of change. Whatever went on before, that was the river. This is the sea.

  • I see this as my "Swansong" song.Life just doesn't do it for me anymore and this is going to be my playout song and "That was the river,THIS IS THE SEA" engraved on my headstone.New beginnings!

  • @DuncanAndersonHowart are you implying suicide? Hey man I know you want new beginnings but as Led Zep said "There's still time to change the road you're on." Message me if you're still alive.

  • Fucking Brilliant fantastic! heaven

  • @hughilene Forget the brits and irish.

  • ...YOU BRIT'S, IRISH, SCOTS;

SURE WRITE SOME OF THE MOST DEEPLY BEAUTIFUL,

    MEANINGFUL

    FULL-FO-FEELING SONGS OF LIFE

  • an bighearted band less we forget

  • saw these guys in 86 at milton keynes supporting simple minds . the following saturday i went to our price and bought their entire back catalogue. this song is their pinnacle- a total triumph.fantastic!

  • @davyroppaslf1:Me too! I don't recall seeing you there unless you was one of the guys that cut the arms off your red sweatshirt to use as a hat 'cos it was pissing down mid-afternoon.

  • Has there ever been made an emotionally stronger song in the history of popular music?

  • @ivankaramasov if there is i havent heared it!

  • Like wrapping my ear drum in velvet! :)

  • Like wrapping my ear drum in velvet!

  • I want to go home. Thank you Waterboys.Forever.

  • Zero dislikes. There is a heaven.

  • This song and this album split my heart wide open.

  • you dont need no ticket dont pay no fee!!!!

  • words can be pretty

  • I don't know if Mike Scott is shouting at me or imploring with to be happy. I think it changes on how i feel when i listen to it. Pure class.

  • When I listen, this song never fails to generate strong emotions. The lyrics are sufficiently ambigous that it has meant different things to me at different times. I've kinda grown up with this song as a soundtrack to my life and it is the one song I'd like to have played at my funeral. Seems kinda fitting as a funereal song.

  • I am sad that many people on this earth will never have the chance to hear this song.

  • Just one of the best songs ever recorded. Quite a brilliant composition.

It sounds even better now than it did as a 16 year old ............ and I loved it then!!

  • That was the river, THIS IS THE SEA!.. Wow, what a great metaphor..

  • i recently ran across this song surfing youtube and i just love it..i didnt know this song is this old..thank God for youtube..

  • Whenever I play this song I just can't seem to get the volume up loud enough. Luckily I live on 30 acres in the forest and I have no neighbours because this HAS TO BE HEARD LOUD. I'm gonna have it played as the final song at my funeral.

  • simply great... that's actually my life ;-)

  • first song i learned how to play on the guitar and still my favourite to play.amazing number

  • wow...powerful song and lyrics, this song has such an emotive force so many songs and artists are lacking nowadays....his music speaks of the land and of the soul, of the banal yet wondrous life we can live, to treasure moments, and capture your dreams. thank you mike scott

  • met the guys in Galway a long time ago playing outside a pub, what a day ill never forget it!! they never stopped playing, as long as the guinness flowed the music cotinued what a great band of people

  • It's like being on the edge of a waterfront. "That was the river", like all sorts of trouble coming to an end in front of a vast ocean, "far away from the cryland and its bitter memories". Is this a coincidence? The last song of the This Is The Sea Album and the first song out of the Fisherman's Blues. My love to all people affected by this BIG MUSIC.

  • You know, if you look at the negative image, you can make out a person stand on the edge of a cliff looking out onto the ocean. Pretty cool.

  • Long time no hear - probably their best ever song in a very strong back catalogue.....

The production on this is brilliant it sounds like about 50 acoustic guitars all strumming in unison......Waterboys forever

  • 100%

  • not the best song in the world but i can agree that it is good

  • I have no idea why this song provokes tears in me, but it never fails. Perhaps some old...

  • musical heaven

    jesus as music

    george best as a priest

church is not made with hands:)))

  • yeah me too. he nailed it down.

  • @shakeahand1

yeah me too. he nailed it down.

  • @shakeahand1 I like it to and so we can be friends

  • Sounds like a graduation song or something.

  • Simply put, the most well-written and performed song ever.
