why do they call it a cape?

Because the old fashioned cycling waterproofs were literally a cape that covered the handlebars, thus keeping the riders lower half dry as well. The word cape has stuck even though modern jackets are not actually a cape.

I dont think it fair to say Pantani was on any more drugs then the people he raced against for two decades. I read about half of his bio so far and its quite inspiring despite any drug use.

He wasn't murdered, he overdosed on cocaine. I don't understand why everyone views him as such a hero when he was a well known drug cheat, while all the other drug cheats just get completely vilified.

First: he has never been found positive to anti doping tests! Search on wikipedia.

Second: In his hotel room in rimini he was found with so much cocaine in his mouth that he couldn't be able too kill himself in this way. Someone has obliged him to eat all those cocaine so he was killed! The evidence was in his earth that was grabbed away by the doctor who made the autopsy and than it was hidden. Noone says that Marco has never take drugs but even if he took them his feats would not be affected!

Yes,that is right,but he was involved with doping,but his career was ended too early.I hate it when people like Lance Armstrong,get all this credit,when he is involved with the same doping doctor,and had a bag of cash handed to manager,of rider who had broken away,from him too!

Roche wasn't right. He admitted as much a few minutes later after a chat with Fignon. When you are sitting in a commentary box or at home it's easy to forget how cold you can get on an Alpine descent at nearly 9000ft in those conditions. Pantani stayed strong all the way to the finish and won, a few seconds lost to put a cape on paid off later. Whereas Ullrich lost 9 minutes partly because he was frozen on the descent.
