Paul a "poet" of the 1960s? That kind of label was always reserved for Bob Dylan or Paul Simon. In my eyes, Paul's great gift was and is writing music, writing melodies. People say John was a better lyricist than Paul. I don't know. Some of John's "word salad" songs like I am the Walrus and Come Together are a hodgepodge of images that don't necessarily cohere as poetry. Strawberry Fields might have been John's most poetic. Penny Lane, the best for Paul as poetry.

@Doleafol I agree with you. Not many people know that John did say that Paul can write some amazing lyrics but that he didn't spend enough time developing and working on it. Paul's more into the music but he has written some great lyrics both in The Beatles and solo.

Lennon-McCartney lyrics were indeed an essential component of pop culture during the '60's, and to varying degrees, have remained crucial and important to subsequent generations.

I don't think Paul was trying to express much more than that.

Having said that, I also agree with most of what you've said, but I'll add that:

Paul's best lyrics, his most poetic IMO, are found in Yesterday.

John's are to be found in All You Need Is Love.
