Australia has the smallest number of asylum seekers.... we are arrogant people and we justify the ill-treatment of these vulnerable people. Almost all cases are legitimate over 90%. We make a lot of noise about nothing. Politicians use the asylum seekers and border protection issue to win votes. Why put them in prisons? It's not humane! Furthermore, I come from Sabah in East Malaysia where the immigration situation is chaos. Decades of mismanagement and corruption have led to an estimated 2/3 of the state being illegal immigrants from Indonesia and the Philippines. Not everyone gets residencies. The ones that don't, have children without birth certificates or education and these children are now adults. Australia is not the only nation affected. I think a joint effort between other countries needs to be undertaken.

I actually agree with Laurie Ferguson. There should be some security measures in processing illegal immigrants. Even when I first came to Australia 5 years ago on a legit student visa, I had to attend International College for two semesters and it felt similar. I had to take Australian Studies and Communications courses even as a native English speaker. I've been in Australia long enough to trust that its political system is far more humane and rational than that of most other countries.
