It's a sad sad shame to see such and incredible piece of history go up in flames. I agree that the arson might have been influenced by the developer. Even though the final demo permit was given, protesters could have held back the demo, and everyday that Alma sat there was costing the developer money. Makes me sick that this happened and especailly that it was arson. Glad I was able to go last year and take pictures.
For the sake of progress? Saving people who are starving? Honey, if we can't even save a building, band together as humans and fix up 1 building, with such rich heritage, beauty and potential; how the heck are we supossed to take care of all the starving people? People would obviously rather destroy than create, this is a perfect example of how much people truly care. That building was a lot more than brick and mortar to a lot of people. I agree with you on one thing, at least noone died...
Its just a building. at least no one died. The arsonist probibly worked for the devoloper. thats how buiness happens. someone with a good idea burns a useless peice of crap building so soceity can progress. theres a lot more people in the world starving; to worry about some bricks.
You are an idiot. It wasn't a useless piece of crap. It was a great piece of architecture with wonderful history. For many people it held great memories. Burning down history doesn't help society progress, it does quite the opposite.
Losing Alma College is tragic, all that history. These old buildings connect us to the past, energies and memories for many people. This building was architectually beautiful as well. It was a sad sight to drive there tonight and see the rubble that was left after the beautiful building burnt.
Obamaforprez2008 <-- from America according to profile page.
Disappointed yet not surprised the college burnt. I'd be happy if they left the grounds as is and turned it in to a park and not build anything over it.
Obamaforprez2008 - Sorry, man - no "black people" go to this school. No "white people" go either - the school has been empty since the early '80's. Are you even from St Thomas area???
This place got what it deserved. This school has a strong history of racism against ALL people of color. Will someone please tell me how many black people go to this school? It can't be many.
Obamaforprez2008. Are you mental!!!. Don't you watch the new or look up stuff. Alma was known for helping break racial crap. By allowing girls balck white brown. All of the world to go there.! Gets facts before you talk.
You idiot! What are you talking about? Think before you speak. You must BE black, because you just can't let the whole racism bullshit GO! There was NOBODY attending Alma college anymore, it has been abandoned for years. Do some research before you stick your other foot in your mouth.
The Zubic family were the ones that WANTED it torn down.. I definatly think they were involved. And it wasnt at all 4 days before a decision was made to be torn down.. they made that decision 2 weeks ago! Everyone just thought that MAYBE there was a chance we could save it :(
nah--- there was no steel really...she was gutted. no plumbing, wiring or anything of the sorts. All good ol canadian hardwood and brick. they're thinking more long term...a new development...the potential of the property more than anything.
audiomaryjane take the blinders off...zubick has been trying to get rid of her for years...there was never any intention of full preservation...the intent was to make money.
There is more money in recovering the scrap materials than insurance. Use your head, they know the best palces to get the best prices for recovered scrap!
it had to have been arson. it was 4 days after the 130th anniversary of the day the first brick was laid for Alma, and 4 days before a decision was to have been made whether to save her. It was definitely arson.
The owners are not involved in the fire. I know personally that no one was more hopeful to preserve the building than they were. the building was just not structurally sound enough to renovate. Even with demolition planned, the front facade was to be preserved to the best ability of those performing the work. There were measured plans made up in the event that it could not have been preserved, and it is likely that those plans will now be used to rebuild the facade to preserve it's history.
foxy that is interesting that you said that because earlier tonight a bunch of us were talking and that came up - that the owners possibly paid people to do it. I know they are involved somehow!
i think we should have alma day the day that is got build that day that is opened the day that it closeed that day that is got burned down we should have alma day on may 28th
omg i started to cry when i saw itburn down her would do that, that is history in our lifes my dad was to class there and so did my mom i am so sad my dad and mom cryed cuz my mom look from the back and ssaw the bed room she was in but nothiing was there but still she new were it was. my dad only went to class there did not sleep there but he is still sad she said "tat was a shame to see it gone " and he said " curse who ever did that i hope they go to jail" i wish i could of gone there im sad>
that really is sad, I remember as a teen going there and visiting the girls that went to school there, and also playing around the grounds with friends......
this was really sad ... people have no life. that they have to burn something down ...iam sure if some one burnt down something down that they liked ... they would be mad too
We might as well Blame those girls again nothing better to do. After watching the news and how they said they can't reach the owners on anything Clearly says that they had something to do with it. Probably paid off some young kids to do it .
i know that the Zeubic family (who is the current owner) was on sceene by mid afternoon if not before. I dont blame them for not talking to the media until they have some of the facts on what happened
wow you dont even understadn how choked i am im so mad at this theres theorys that two girls did this (the girls that burnt parkside?????) but anyways i believe it was actualyl the owner becasue you can tell it was suspicious timing
i was on the end of forest(by the church ) and whatching the smoke and fire and then one of the points fell and exploded and i could feel the vibrations like i was right next to it
just to bad some one would do that but it was going down any was still the person who did it can lite there house (or cardbord box) on fire

haha..
have you read the TJ on Alma..
"Alma College, which towered through three centuries over St. Thomas, is ashes."
130years is three centuries now.
travisgreen1 3 years ago
if it was build in 1800s, lived through 1900s and died in 2000s. thats 3. you must not have thought about that one too long.
unixaaron 3 years ago
sweet.
does that mean that I have lived for two centuries in St. Thomas
And that my 9 year old bungalow has towered in St. Thomas for two centuries.. such an odd way to phrase something
