PLEASE HELP! I have a very old PC computer and it takes forever to start isntalling but then it stops at 58% and a messege box pops up telling me about an "error 5" and when I click OK the screen goes black and white letters start showing up.
Think about it. I'm sure you know of how long it takes for shifting large files from one hard drive, say, a removable one, to an internal one. Quite lengthy, eh?
Now, resizing it down to the left isn't that big of an issue, because it just shrinks the partition's data range. Simple. But to the right...
It's got to move every. Single. Byte of data. Over to that side. Your standard transfer rates still apply, so you'd better grab some coffee and let it do its' thing.
I am curious, during the installation around 70% completion there is a button on the right hand corner that appears. It reads "skip" I believe, what does that do? Does it alter anything in the installation procedure?
@SuperMrRoro@SuperMrRoro dude I would start out with a live cd of 9.10 which is hella easy to install unlike the newest version give it some space by choosing the allocate option and then install, from their i would just upgrade it to 10.04 which would later go to 10.10 so do it ASAP, make sure your comp isn't 10 years old otherwise you'll be screwed, if so then install 9.10 and don't upgrade. :) Good luck! Just ask me for help if you need it, at Help4Linux on Twitter! Oh and Wubi Is great!
After the Ubuntu loading screen which takes.. FOREVER, I goto a black screen with text telling of an missing file? Help... I've attempted to install 4 times, and have downloaded the iso 3 times :/
Dude I just installed ubuntu 10.04 today and when I rebooted my pc I was bought to cmd looking page(terminal)--so I entered my username and password-- I don't no wa to do after that--- please tell me wa to do
@cuteboybunty no yahoo messenger what so ever to my knowledge, not sure on live messenger, never tried it. Pidgeon however is compatable with the two clients, and as far as performance is concerned it may be a little sluggish, but more than useable. I might suggest you use Xubuntu because its lighter on dependencies.
I tried installing Ubuntu 10.04 as well as Kubuntu with no success. I am using a Quad Core Athlon X2 620 processor, 4GB RAM, with 64-bit Windows Ultimate. I have used wubi, but it seems that after the program installs I get some sort of load failure screen, and it takes me to a grub screen that wants me to prompt Repair Grub, load Grub, or load Windows 7 are the options given.
Additionally, my Internet Connection fails, it shows an Internet connection that's valid . Anyone able to help?
When I boot from the cd I don't get the language select or installation menu. I just get stuck on the screen the same as 0:54 in this vid. Anyone know what's wrong?
Can I after Installing Ubuntu uninstall Windows Xp that I have in order to save disk space & make it easier on my my system by having only one OS rather than 2..???
It is junk. As a normal upgrade from 9.10 using update manager, it lost the lot, 'cos it did not like something it had previously downloaded as part of a normal update. --- Screwed my entire hard drive, so noe with the disk, I am putting 9.10 back in, along with its 283 updates. Then it will be Flash, then my entire address book, then a few programs via Synaptic. Maybe in a month it will be back to normal. - Then I will get Virtual Box & start looking for a better distro. -- 10.04 SUCKS!
Guys I can't install ubuntu on my computer. Whenever I try to allocate the hard disk with partition magic I get an error saying "partition's drive letter cannot be identified". What can I do? Are there anyone who can help me?
@kbr247 I am trying to install ubuntu as the second OS. I am running vista and its already installed on the C drive and I don't have any other partitions, only C. I tried to shrink the HDD with vista's default shrinking tool, but it shows only 5 gb as shrinkable. Half of my HDD is empty and I am still trying to find a way to dual-boot my computer..
@thenerdturtle I just finished installing it.. After restarting, dual boot screen showed up and after selecting ubuntu, it continued installation but in the loading screen I got an error saying "no root file system defined" and I couldn't go any further. I kept getting the same error after rebooting three times. What is this now? Won't I ever install linux on my computer. Even my old crappy computer was running it smoothly..
Ubuntu is OK, Fedora FTW!

When you install it to enable dual-boot, should the resizing of the partition take a long time?!
SilentFool602 1 year ago
@SilentFool602 there are no partitions in Wubi.
