2) Hip-hop has to freedom to evolve into whatever it wants as long as its foundation and integrity remain intact.

KRS-One is REAL Hip-Hop. He shows respect to people and doesn't knock anyone's hustle. I like what he had to say about T-Pain and those that followed him.
This is how it was when Hip-Hop started. We used to clown on each other in battles but at the end of day, it was love and respect. That was what got people off the streets and out of trouble - and I love Hip-Hop for that.

This is a great conversation. People don't always appreciate good music - definition of good music is that it's good today,yesterday, and 20 years from now. If the music business is about giving people what they want, then Method and Red, would still be mainstream. They're not, and this latest 09' joint may not go platnum, but they are still top notch. Platinum DOES mean that people like your stuff, but it does NOT mean that you are gifted. It just means that you have distribution.

The old school dudes are still doing their thing, and there are plenty of folks who support them. They don't do the record labels- they tour, and do the live thing. The record companies won't work with them b/c they're trying to push what's current. So I can't believe that only the record companies have what's hot - you're right - the fans know. That's why the old school is still around. If you want the art you have to go underground.

Also- there's a difference between a person with talent, and an artist. A talented person may never evolve into an artist, but they can still sell platinum albums. An artist won't go platinum, but will get respect, and will also have depth/staying power that the modern "talents" don't have. In this context (auto tune thing) people aren't trying to be artists, they're trying to make money FAST. Music business doesn't want art, they want talent to bring in $ flow.

no, that means that a few million people have not been exposed to better singing, such as billie holiday, aretha franklin, etc. they haven't heard of real singers such as this, not just people like raven who are mass margeted by disney with catchy beats so they would sell to preteens. someday they will mature and hear a little more music and realize that raven really did not have any singing talent.

I'm torn over "people not buying for quality these days'... if you talk to some, they'll say hip hop is no good anymore, but if you talk to teens and young 20 yr olds, they think it's alive and well. The separation of the current gen and previous gen is a problem, but the music is still there to be heard, so I take solace in that.

I hear what you saying, but I can't agree with some things you mentioned.
1) Do you really believe Jay or KRS are "mad". These guys are legends, too big for such pettiness. What they are concerned with is preservation of rap as an art-form that doesn't degrade into a bunch of copy-cat artists propped up by the latest gimmick.
2) Hip-hop has to freedom to evolve into whatever it wants as long as its foundation and integrity remain intact.

Thing is, Jay has worked with autotune before. KRS is always looking out for hip hop's best interests, but Jay is a business man. He can sense the growing animosity towards auto tune and he picked the right time to jump on the 'denounce auto tune' bandwagon so that he gets maximum exposure and respect. I don't have a problem with what he's doing, but that's the way it is
