@lakobause That is weird because I also have an aunt that looks like Ursula minus the tentacles and has the same attitude. You're right, many people have that aunt.
if ursula has such awesome magic, then why the hell'd she bother to wait for ariel to come to her? she coodve just literally taken the crown from the king and turned everyone into those weeds....
IF U are reading this dont stop this girls name is grace if you dont post this in 10 games you will suffer your life in 12 years pls post this in 10 games so that you will be lucky and never be killed by grace this is no joke my friend died when he didnt listen to what i said
This is a great movie ... I always enjoyed the sheer musicality that went into making the Disney musicals, and this is no exception. They make very evil villains, and although I wouldn't put Ursula up the top (I'd reserve that spot for Frollo from Hunchback) she certainly does her job well.
"And don't underestimate the importance of BODY LANGUAGE." *swings hips* lol That part always makes me giggle.
As for the message that "she who holds her tongue who gets a man", that is URSULA saying that. The kids really aren't supposed to root for the villain, or listen to their messages. Besides, she's just saying that to convince Ariel to give up her voice.
Honestly, I think it all depends on how you take it. I say she's a villain telling lies to get Ariel to give up her voice. I grew up with this movie and I'm perfectly fine. I don't need a man to survive, and really I didn't get that message as a child. Also, while Ariel did want her man, she had also dreamed of being human and seeing the world above the surface. So I think she may have had a little more motivation than just getting Eric. That's all just my opinion though...
You'll have your looks, your pretty face. And don't underestimate the importance of body language, ha! The men up there don't like a lot of blabber They think a girl who gossips is a bore! Yet on land it's much prefered for ladies not to say a word And after all dear, what is idle babble for? Come on, they're not all that impressed with conversation True gentlemen avoid it when they can But they dote and swoon and fawn On a lady who's withdrawn It's she who holds her tongue who get's a man
yes but her song is purporting to be a "truth" about male/female dynamics and that if the mermaid follows this and is successful (which she is) that it is true and will work. the villainous part is TAKING THE VOICE, the unfortunate part is that it works (even ursula though it wouldn't, so we are worse than even she thought).
the lesson that the "most important thing for a woman" is to "have a man" and to "hold her tongue and use body language" to get him is kinda sad and outrageous. these two things have nothing to do with villainy other than the message it gives young girls.
now if the mermaid set out to do it without a voice but the guy wouldn't go for it, then it would disprove the song lyrics and give us all a little dignity....so it has nothing to do with ursula, it has to do with us.
just because ursula is so fun as a character and the mermaid seems like a nice girl doesn't mean the lyrics (printed above) are a good, healthy message, i mean Disney IS fallible !
the writers Ashman (died of aids at 40) and Menken are men. they could certainly lose the woman's perspective. I love ursula as a drag queen but this also adds to the point that the woman's perspective on what is a healthy approach to "how to get a man" is lost.
The entire song is about an old witch taking advantage of a young naive girl. Now, I love a good conspiracy theory, Disney has definitely done shameful things in its musicals (Song of the South), but the purpose of every lyric in this song is to have Ursula convince Ariel that all she needs to do is to conform to these male-female stereotypes to get her prince. The gain is 2fold for the villain, the degradation of the object of her jealousy and the possession of a beautiful voice.
i just also believe that to take the voice is villainous- yes, but the fact that (before ursula intervenes) it would WORK for ariel voice-less means something about our society perpetuated by the film.
the little mermaid was written by a man pining for a man in 1837. Ursulas lyrics were written by a gay man. the result is 2 gay men's POV drawn out for little girls. A homoerotic hold-your-tongue make your move, and see what happens... disney-fied for kids. weird
Are you saying that Disney is sending subliminal messages to children to try to turn them gay? also, I'd be really interested in hearing your views on the song Hellfire from Hunchback.
no i do not think you can turn anything, i think you can be born feeling like you are one, the other, or both. i also think people who are open can choose to have a more open-mind about who they might love
stories and songs crafted by men who are interested in men have very little insight into women's voices. i have nothing against gay men, and nothing against them dominating the entertainment industry. i just think that this story and song are logical for them and not women.
ps i looked at hunchback hellfire and you knew before i looked at it that i wasn't going to be a fan, i am not.
@RebbieFan Do not forget the power grab against King Triton. Gaining that kind of power is certainly worth making a few politically incorrect remarks.
"and don't forget the importance of body language" seriously disney is a six year old supposed to get this stuff? You see much more in disney once you get older. I like it, it makes it worth watching again and again
@illshootforthemoon Adults watch this with their kids. They have to get something out of it too if forced to sit through it. Better it's something that children wouldn't even catch at that age. :)
u mean ur gramdma has eight black slimy tenchiles and lives underwater in a giant shell thing ur gran must be awesome i bet ur get good prez of her for bdays and chrismas
Ursula doesn't seem to be asking for a price, it seems more like one of those challenges you get on double dare. "You have three days to win the heart of the prince using your new legs, and if you can make him fall in love you then the legs are yours to keep. BUT! if you faaaaail... you lose the legs and i keep your soul. but! you can use your singing crab and talking fish to help you out, ok. on your mark..... get set.... go!!!" then the double dare theme starts
like with Cruella the line about kill them shoot them bash them on the head, got any chlorophorm and from the live action the monologue at the end, from Jafar his song, and when hes turning into the snake and genie. :)
The Little Mermaid is one of my favorite Disney movies. Ursula was a villian who I liked BETTER THAN THE MAIN CHARACTER. Is that even.... okay? I don't know, it's just that, she has so much more presence and personality than Ariel. Take this song, for example. Ariel's demure nature is completely overshadowed by the robustly vivacious Ursula, with little to no presence in the song, if only to serve the plot. Is that valid at all...?
Sure it's valid! my beef is that girls are supposed to find a role model in ariel. "she who holds her tongue who gets a man"?? WTF?? what is wrong w/ people??
I was raising my ex's kids when this came out. they were 6 and 8. the younger one (a girl) couldn't believe the story. we were all a bit shocked by the woman with no voice thing when we saw it. it wasn't that different a time unless you are like 9 yrs old now in 2009 and cant remember the 90's which explains why you'd think it was THAT different. we're not talking 1950 here. the "it was a different time" excuse is getting old, it's just disney crap and marketing and the cute lobster.
hansendesigns, I sincerely doubt that that was the message Disney was trying to get across to us. The fact is, Ursula is a villain, and she was using those lies in order to convince Ariel to give up her voice. Key word: LIES.
You can't take a villain's words seriously, the whole point is that you distrust them.
so i guess gay male disney song lyricists (Ashman) are infallible when creating female role models and their situations!
they are the authority on male/female relations- all hail disney, don't let there be descent especially if it's catchy, looks amazing and is fun sounding.
i mean i like ursula, I like Ashman the lyricist, i just think the body language/hold her tongue storyline is a mistake and a bad message.
@hansendesigns - There are a lot of other expectations for little girls that Disney sets up - girls should be THIN, girls need a MAN to be happy, and so on and so forth, not to mention that women of color are next to nonexistant. I think Ursula's advice to Ariel is minor compared to other things that are wrong with this movie.
What's interesting is that there are so many flavors of villains. And Villain Songs brings them into sharp relief. Compare this to Be Prepared and Hellfire and you'll see what I mean. Motivation and modus opperendi are the key. Ursula is a power hungry manipulator, while Scar is a jealous ambitious schemer, and Frollo is a self righteous tyrant.
Ursula is definitely not the generic cartoon villain, at least she makes a small attempt at concealing her motives
"It's not pure evil til it's Disney evil! :D "
:O Objection! Johan Liebert from Monster surpasses any Disney villain in evil-ness. His shear presence makes people die, kill and commit suicide. (all three are proven in the series)
the old 2D animation has much more soul than anything they put out now. Ursula is incredible

they are the authority on male/female relations- all hail disney, don't let there be descent especially if it's catchy, looks amazing and is fun sounding.
i mean i like ursula, I like Ashman the lyricist, i just think the body language/hold her tongue storyline is a mistake and a bad message.

@hansendesigns - It's a bad message coming from an evil character. Um, duh. I don't think any rational kid would take URSULA's advice.

@HaloofCurls except ariel DOES take her advice and it all comes out well, what does that say?
