Looked like Jeff Sweeney. It is not the sousaphone players fault. When you do a bow like that, you don't now where the bell is going to end up at. You have to give the band room!
Reminds me of the time I ran over a judge at a marching band contest :-) "I'm goin' left! I'm goin' left!!! WHAP! I was a Trombone player and a Defensive End. Conflicted!
the camera guy is just like "run away from the sousa player!" omg that rocked. i dont care what you say, marching band is the best SPORT (yes, i said sport) EVER INVENTED!
this one time at band camp i was trying not to get a sunburn so i wore a hoodie and jeans in 103 degree weather (the hoodie kinda helped my shoulders since i was on the drumline). as soon as i got in a cool area i had a nose bleed from hell. moral of the story.....just get the fucking sunburn
SO PEOPLE I AM IN A MARCHING DRUM AND BUGLE CORP SO MY OPINION IS THAT IT TAKES MORE TO MARCH THAN TO SPRINT DOWN A TRACK. COMPARED TO ALL THE PRACTICES OF RUNNING, MARCHING, PLAYING, AN THEN DOING IT FOR A SHOW OF 15 MINUTES. WITH BREAKS FOR ABOUT 10 SECONDS, I'D LIKE TO SEE YOU TRY.
From a grandmother who has followed my grandson march all over in competitons, it behooves me to respond. I rather doubt that most people possess the determination, intelligence, motivation and heart of the dedicated members of all Marching Bands and Drum & Bugle Corp members.
I remember watching this on tv. The vid from the camera guy that got hit was priceless. Right before he hits him you could kind of hear the band member yell LOOK OUT then whack. It was great. Go Bucks. And as always I love TBDBITL.
@DHREVOLUTION i'm not trying to dis people that are in track, but sprinting for at most 5 minutes in a race does not equal 12 minutes of a Drum and Bugle Corps, DCI show.
@cavalierfan2008 dude the training it takes for drum and bugle corps is way harder than sprinting for 5 minutes, i march the boston crusaders and at move-ins for amonth straight, i sleep ona gym floor, wake up at 6, do3 hours of physical training, then visual block, then section block, visual again, and some more PT with about three one hour breaks for food, and we finish up at midnight, then we go to bed and do it againthe next day for a straight month, then we go on tour. i lost 25 lbs. in 2010
@DHREVOLUTION have you ever seen the bodies top 12 DCI guys in august? Not an ounce of fat, ripped to the bone, they look like track stars. Most of the time we would be rehearsing and out comes the local football team, white and fat.
Marching band is gay? Do you know HOW much hardwork & dedication it takes? My marching band had AT LEAST 8 hour days of learning music, drill, & everything else. You were on blacktop from 8 to at least 4 in 100 degree weather + humidity. We did straight leg & for anyone that has done that knows how DIFFICULT it is. During the school year we had practice EVERY morning & EVERY afternoon. Core rules: Be strong, be dedeicated, & if someone is in your way knock them down & walk on them. Point blank.
@chicagoo17 you obviously are a thin minded person. So in your mind all football players are the most athletic people in the world right? Wrong! At my highschool I march Bari sax. With a neck strap. The counter weight throws you off so much i have to work out just to stay balanced. Half of the football team is either to fat to see their dick, or so skinny they cant withstand a tackle. If anything the football team is a bunch of faggots.
@chicagoo17 Child, you clearly do not know what the hell you're talking about. I am in the pit, but I have to lift marimba, timpani and other shiz like that, and I have it easier than the rest of the people. Want some examples? Look at some of the other comments. Poor SaxMtC here has to march with a bari sax. I've played the bari sax before. I'd like to see you even attempt to hold it correctly while standing, then march it running. I doubt that I could do that. So shut the hell up.
How is marching band Gay? You need to be dedicated and fit to do this marching for a straight 4 hours because that's how long our marching band plays at my high school for most local parades lets see you do that.We pull all the girls at are school(except for this one creepy guy) Everyone in my school band would make look more insignificant than mud we march on.
To all of you that think marching band kids are "gay", "nerds", or incapable of anything, im a snare drummer in the University of Cincinnati Bearcat Marching Band, and I have a 310lbs bench press, 490lbs squat, i full clean 350lbs, i run a 4.41 40 yd dash, and i run track here at UC. Band kids are very athletic
Seriously? This "professional" camera guy didn't know that an OSU Sousaphone player (and the drum major) were going to high step across the field and do the "dot the I" swing-down routine? If you aren't familiar with what you're filming, and are dumb enough to ignore the advice of the subject you're filming when he says to move, then you deserve what you get. My son plays Sousa, and trust me - the camera man's only lucky break was that the camera wasn't to his face when it happened.
This was an awkward situation for the Sousaphone player but was it right to assault the cameraman who was only trying to make him a star? I don't think so. Too many witnesses, for one thing. The Sousaphone player should quit music and join the Marines.
@firmingitup Never mind. Found it. And he does tell the cameraguy to watch out but it's a tenth of a second before he hits him so not so much advanced warning there..
If you watch the other video where it shows the camera guy's perspective, the sousaphone player actually tells the camera man to watch out right before he bows.
Jonevans331 is full of it. A sousa is not 100 lbs. And if you have 50-60 lbs of water built up, you're really doing something wrong...I'm probably one of the weakest ones in my band and I can easily lift a Sousa in one hand so stop making it seem harder than it is. It's difficult, yes, but not quite that bad...join drumline if you want a workout. Sousaphone is a pussy instrument compared to bass 6 or tenors.
@Mgsoloist Sousas and contras actually weigh a lot more than a bass drum, and a little more than a tenor. i know i load my band's truck every rehersal and band camp and i've felt how heavy all of the instruments are, and the drums are nothing compared to my contra.
@Mgsoloist Sousas and contras actually weigh a lot more than a bass drum, and a little more than a tenor. i know i load my band's truck every rehersal and band camp and i've felt how heavy all of the instruments are, and the drums are nothing compared to my contra. but your right about the weight, there is not way a sousa could weigh 100 pounds.
@muhammaddog Really, marching is gay? Last time I checked marching band was a fucking workout that I bet you couldn't handle. Lets see you practice your ass off at an instrument for years, then throw in sprinting down a field at 180 BPM... Oh and you're marching. Let me tell you, you wouldn't last a day in TBDBITL. Hell you couldn't make it in if you tried. Marching Band is tougher than you bet. At least thats what this faggot thinks.
@lfml4960 TRY HAVING A 100 LB INSTUMENT ON YOUR SHOULDER, ALL OF IT'S WEIGHT IN A SPOT NO BIGGER THAN UR THUMB, FOR 4 HOURS STRAIGHT. ONCE YOU DO THAT, WHILE MARCHING AT 180 BPM, AND PUSHING OUT MORE ARE CONSTANTLY THAN YOU LUNGS HAVE, THEN YOU WILL UNDERSTAND.
@lfml4960 Oh, and to add to that another, lets say, 50-60 LBS from water built up in the bell. Not to mention uniforms with about ZERO maneuverability, that burn you alive in the sun and freeze you to death in the cold. as well as the fact that a band director, when truly pissed, is probably worse than a football coach after you just made the biggest fuck up in your entire life on the field
@nativtex1 also, throw in the fact that here in Britain, our National bands must have ovver 3 years active military service, and you have a fairly bad-ass troupe of musicians
@nativtex1 correct, i was in it for 4 years, harder than foot ball ever was and will be... it was not he fact ur marching and playing music while hold space and correct movements with other people. it might as simple as you think it is but in the end pick up a 57 lbs drum and march you ass down a 15 mile parade route with no breaks, and also hold a strong tempo for the rest of the band. so i give people props for taking the abuse from the tards who probably cant tie there shoes.
he shouldnt be worrying about it. haha its not his fault its the camera man. and he handled it well and continued the show. the only thing i would worry about is the damage to the sousaphone :P
What I meant was that those sousaphones are built to last. That camera definitely got the worst of the deal. You're right about my not being a band geek, though. I was in the choir. :)
Badass. As a sousaphone player, I definately give this guy props for sticking to the show. It's really hard to ignore a judge who's standing right in your path...
@majulahagapao honestly (unless your jewish or german) you shouldn't take offence to that, i live in the so called "getto" and unless your a "pussy" i say again you shouldn't take offence i'm sorry if the way i joke offends you,
@FlexedBrute No, I'm not German or Jewish, but you made a stupid joke about a mass genocide of millions. And then you call yourself Hitler? I'm sorry, but you sound like a stupid middle-schooler.
@onewiseowl You realize that when a marching band is performing, we don't acknowledge anything going on not involving the show. At competitions, judges sometimes purposely stand on your dot to test you mentally. You're supposed to run them over. And anyone who gets in the way of your performance. We take what we do very seriously. If anything that camera man is an idiot... The sousaphone player did yell "watch out" which was generous even, because we shouldn't talk at attention.
@ClassicalClarinetist Yes, I realize this. I am in marching band, have been for four years. I am just simply saying, it isn't really a dig deal to be off your spot, especially if it means not waking some dudes camera on the ground, and denting your bell. Marching band doesn't matter near as much as the wrecked camera and the dented bell. All could have been avoided if he wasn't a dick about hitting his spot.
@onewiseowl he was the dot of the 'i' in Ohio though, given moving back would have avoided or the camera man moving back right after he said to watch out
@bunkerbuster0118 He is SUPPOSED TO BE FLAMBOYANT. The band, specifically the Ohio State Band, spells out the word "Ohio" and one person has the high honor of "dotting the i" in "Ohio." It's a long standing tradition at Ohio State and it's that person job to do all that to stand out as he dots the i.
@tomistube I'm in marching band, and whenever a person is in ur way you run over them, the Sousa player was taught to do that, and plus the camera man was in the way, it wasn't the sousa's fault it was the camera mans fault, so shut up u don't know what ur talking about
It's one thing if the sousa player went out of his way a couple yards and smashed it on the camera purposefully. But, this it his spot, his routine, his drill. He has been taught for 8+ years that he goes through with everything, no matter what is in the way.
OSU has done this since this mid 1930s. This sousa has waited 4 (or more) years for his shot at dotting the i. The cameraman should have known it was coming anyway, he's covering an Ohio State football game. Tradition.
@maplerborrego15 It's definitely not eighty. I should know, I play trumpet, french horn, melophone, baritone, sousaphone, and pretty much anything brass along with some woodwinds.
At least the sousaphone wasn't hurt.

@1kittiesgonewild1 You do know there exist several marching styles right? Or are you a rookie?
PenguInspiration 4 months ago
@PenguInspiration I aint no rookie thank you very much!
1kittiesgonewild1 4 months ago
@1kittiesgonewild1 East coast marching style. Well... Midwest marching style. They don't rollstep like us west coasties do.
baribabe17 4 months ago
@baribabe17 We rollstep on the East Coast, too. It depends on which school you attend, and which marching style the director prefers.
KirbyHead 4 months ago
@1kittiesgonewild1 Ohio State University's Band is considered one of the best and always has been. There are tons of different marching styles.

ClassicalClarinetist 4 months ago
@ClassicalClarinetist Yes, I realize this. I am in marching band, have been for four years. I am just simply saying, it isn't really a dig deal to be off your spot, especially if it means not waking some dudes camera on the ground, and denting your bell. Marching band doesn't matter near as much as the wrecked camera and the dented bell. All could have been avoided if he wasn't a dick about hitting his spot.
onewiseowl 4 months ago
@onewiseowl he was the dot of the 'i' in Ohio though, given moving back would have avoided or the camera man moving back right after he said to watch out
mavis996 4 months ago
@mavis996 Oh what ever. It really doesn't matter, does it?

God band geeks are annoying as hell. It is great you take pride in what you do, but dont be flamboyant in what you do.
bunkerbuster0118 4 months ago
@bunkerbuster0118 Dont be a bitch! We do what we are suppose to do.
lieger11 4 months ago
@bunkerbuster0118 He is SUPPOSED TO BE FLAMBOYANT. The band, specifically the Ohio State Band, spells out the word "Ohio" and one person has the high honor of "dotting the i" in "Ohio." It's a long standing tradition at Ohio State and it's that person job to do all that to stand out as he dots the i.

swimteamizzle1114 4 months ago
@tomistube I'm in marching band, and whenever a person is in ur way you run over them, the Sousa player was taught to do that, and plus the camera man was in the way, it wasn't the sousa's fault it was the camera mans fault, so shut up u don't know what ur talking about

is the horn ok?
9598dad 4 months ago 2
what song did you use for this?
wasid13 4 months ago
Did the camera died?
toAdmiller 4 months ago
@tomitstube
Tradition.
