I can't believe the blogs on here . . . as though this ventriloquist act, dancing, singing, and all the rest of the "fluff" could possibly compete with the lady who won. She was a registered nurse working with dying individuals in an oncology unit.
miss arkansas 2011 did something like this too.different song but she was 1st runner up the miss america,Terese Scalin ,miss nebraska.the youngest miss america.
For this year, scoring was changed during the pageant itself, announced on air just before the evening gown competition. Usually talent was worth 50% of the final score, but they changed the scoring so that everything scored was equal. So prelim scores, all swimsuit, evening gown, and talent were all 25% each. The next year it reverted back to the way it had been scored for years, only to change sometime in the 90's. I wonder if this affected Patricia & prevented her form winning the title.
We have the same mind. I 100% agree on your comments of Paige Phillips, Suzette Charles, and Gretchen Carlson. With Patricia Brandt would add up to the top 5 talents ever. Also in contention are Debbye Turner in 1990, Marisol Montalvo in 1992, Titilyo Adedokun in 1994, Miss NY in 1996, and Miss OK in 2003.
@BarryKnightFan Also on the list of the best talent ever should be Shani Nielsen, Miss Indiana from the 96 pageant, the year Tara Holland won and became Ms America 97. Shani sang "In His Eyes" from Jekyll & Hyde on final night in top ten. Some pageant historians who chat in the community chat room on the Ms America site have said she is perhaps the best talent ever. Her pitch and intonation during that song is outstanding. It's worth buying the vhs or dvd from that yr for her talent alone.
This was one of the best talents in Miss Americia Pageant, according to Pageant Magazine---June 2008. From veiwing you sure can see that she brought down the house!!!Todd Thralls Winter Park Florida
Jeez, dude. I think that's kind of an unfair assessment. Jeff Dunham is the cream of the crop as far as ventriloquists go. He's pretty much the best. You can't use the best guy in the field as the standard. That's why it's called a standard.
Each time the dummy speaks out this lovely lady gets a frozen puppet face (a typical mistake among ventriloquists) while glancing to the audience. The song is presented fine, though....
Best talent ever at Miss America? Perhaps ONE of the best. Right up there with Paige Phillips, Miss Alabama in 1980, at age 17, did a similar ventriloquist act, and finished first runner up. Also, check out Suzette Charles belt out 'Kiss me in the Rain' from 1983, what a talent!!! Not to mention Gretchen Carlson, in 1988, with a phenomenal violin performance.
1988 was quite a year for talent at this pageant. Honestly, I thought Tammy Walker's performance of "Don't Rain on My Parade" was probably the best Miss America talent performance I'd ever seen.
This was definitely entertaining, though of course she's not really yodeling.
OMG, I'm in love!!! LOL This why I don't watch these pageants anymore - no more mind-boggling kitsch acts like this. When she got 1st runner up to Rafko - the chick who kept hitting herself in her talent act - I knew entertainment in the USA was in an irreversible slide into mediocrity.
@HazySunlight She does rock here; but remember, this year only, for some reason on that final night, it was announced that the final score was being evenly divided among prelims, and final night talent, swim suit and evening gown, and NOT as in previous year, with talent at 50% final night never know why they made that change but gary collins announces it before evening gown finals

@pa634ntf4n She is youngest according to the current rules ONLY; Miss America '33, won when she was 15; she lied about her age to enter the pageant.

Geez. It's stuff like this that scare people, and make ventriloquists look bad. Look at Jeff Dunham and you will see how it should be done.
