Crypto unpleasantries masked ... 'err ... unmasked here, suffice it say that Mercedes Benz did achieve, despite itself, and owing to two highly disenchanted later ex-employees, wondrous refinement, with its 1957 300SL Roadster convertible, often overlooked or merely forgotten, such an anomaly was its existence; and, too, with its 1959 220S and 220SE: however, only USA’s Navy developed technology of late has availed longevity -- most had simply rusted to death; RUST BULLET!
NO -- unfortunately, your claims clash with facts. Most Benzes, including the much touted 600s, lack anything beyond a cheese-box-on-wheels aesthetic; typically abysmal dash/controls council is at best non-inspirational; overall dowdy, one plus factor, generally) pre-late-1990s, is their wonderfully precise fabrication ... However, (a) they lack beauty, (b) garner no physics prize for mechanical engineering -- a simple cursory evaluation, by popping their hood: convolution maximus; sans luxury!
You need your video games or an ipod access or you cease to function or a GPS to know where you are.
These are and were cars designed to drive and be functional.
Aesthetics one can argue, but if they hadn't sold millions, Mercedes'must have either been well built and/or good looking to most people or else they would have not thrived!!
The cars are worse now, because the demand of the products has decreased: Throwaway society &cars!
@sixpoint3: Your prig & sprig rant paired to its foolish attribution to me of "myopic vision" and/or "a glaring information gap" as to the universe that comprises Automotive Design & Engineering history has been proven inane. Mercedes Benz ('err the muggly chic from whom that enterprise derives its name), akin to the tacky brainwashing advertisement "status" mantra inculcated by the similarly over-rated "branded dorks" eg, Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, Jill Sander share a certain other legacy
This man clearly wields a dearth of automotive history knowledgebase: try the Cadillacs eg, the 1957-58 Eldorados series ... ding-a-ling; the various Ghia Lincolns; Chryslers; Studebaker exteriors; for ultra exteriors/interiors -- late '50's through early '60s Corvette; the Thunderbird series, of which the latter appears to literally take flight ... yet while standing still. One Benz model does hold its own ... a certain mid-'50s convertible. At best, the touted gull-wings fail.
One thing that kinda cracks me up is that a car book once mentioned that if you were a big musician, pope, dictator, president, etc, you NEEDED one of these! Elvis had one and so did Pope John Paul II.
My 1979 240D estate had power steering AND silent central locking and that was a bottom of the range model....don't know why they say "hydraulic" though, as there's no water in the system. Think that it should be "olepneumatic" if it's an oil-based system, but I could be wrong.
Shame that Mercedes lowered their build quality on cars in around 1993 and went from number one to at least number 100 in customer satisfaction surveys.
your 1979 240D had a vaccum air central locking! - Mercedes actually lowered the qulity during the time with Chrysler - german price & american quality don't go together well.
@xraycortina: "Brilliant", indicting the legendary and august Chrysler Motor Works, with your inane and snide remark. Clearly, you suffer from an information gap: German-Americans who made up Chrysler from its inception were often of the same lineage that over two centuries earlier migrated eg, Hessians, Huguenot-Francos, nobleman: genetically gifted types. In fact, Benz sued Chrysler, and Studebaker, for a variety of reasons. Chrysler’s best trump MB’s on most scores; looks/engineering: TCoO!
My dad is a Mercedes Mechanic since early 60s, and im a Bosch Mechanic (who produced the mechanical injection Pumps and the whole Electric sourrounding). We both agree - this car is absolutely unique for two reasons: For its unbelieveable design, power and luxury (for its time) and,on the other hand, the unbelievable mess of repairing and adjusting it!

Ice cooler, an armor, and a TV I've never seen that before in this model. Door open "automatically of course", even cars these days doesn't do that.

Best cars are germans, or maybe italian with ferrari
Proposalx 1 year ago 19
@Proposalx The Italians do some things really well, sports cars essentially, but they could never make something to compete with this in this field.
